A healthcare leader I admire in our community is Randy Oostra. He is the president and CEO of ProMedica Health System. The reason I admire him is his communications to the public are sound positive and optimistic. McConnell (2016) describes one characteristic of an effective leader is that “leaders must be walking mission statements who make their visions come alive by talking about them with enthusiasm and conviction.” (p. 187). In my opinion, Randy exudes enthusiasm for improving the community. Randy was raised in a way that is relatable to many, including myself. He reflected upon his childhood in an interview with The Blade saying that “we were poor, but we didn’t know it.” (Blade, 2016). Knowing that he came from a modest background

When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Throughout 2016, many different people will claim they can lead America to greatness again just as they do each election year. This directs attention towards leadership, and most Americans simply trust that these potential candidates display leadership characteristics. Unfortunately, politicians don’t always exemplify leadership, and many Americans experience poor leaders daily such as dreadful bosses. Because of these commonplace experiences, leadership may not appear as a direct character trait. Adaptable communication, the ability to inspire, a clear passion, and professional attitudes all characterize a true leader.

Sick and tired…. People get hurt in rumbles, maybe killed. I’m sick of it because it doesn’t do any good ‘ ”(Hinton 116-117). At this point of time, Randy apprehends that fighting doesn’t solve anything and it is unethical to beat people for entertainment. Everybody has an equal, Randy looks into the real world and starts acting right in the world. Randy took a step out of the path of evil and had a change of heart. His dad also helped him achieve this. When he told Randy that nobody could get hurt if he would tell the truth. On the other hand, he let his father down because he was confused and disorganized. In a Healthcare environment, a leader by title is someone such as an administrator, director of nursing, supervisor, or a head nurse (manager). These “titled executives” have the task of creating overall healthcare plans, which are designed to instruct subordinates on their daily routines; and creating patient plan of care, which are designed to instruct subordinates on how individual patients will be cared for. Nonetheless, an effective leader, or “true leader”, is someone who positively motivates and encourages followers by clear, understandable instruction; and leads by example. (Atchison, 2004)

However, on closer inspection, simply possessing these personality is not enough. Powerful people are not born powerful.
