Rainbow Rowell, published Eleanor & Park in 2013. The genre of this book is fiction of course. Rainbow Rowell is an American author who was born in 1973 In Omaha, Nebraska. She went to the University of Nebraska, and still currently lives in Omaha with her husband and two sons. She has many other great books like Attachments, Fangirl, Carry On, and Landline. The story revolves around two oddballs living in Omaha, Nebraska. Eleanor is a sixteen-year-old girl with curly red hair, and Park, a half-Korean sixteen-year-old boy. Her and her family lives crammed in a tiny two-bedroom home. All of the children share one bedroom. There’s only one bathroom and not even a door for privacy. Sheridan has lived in Omaha. His life is very different from Eleanor’s. He comes from a loving home, and even gets along with the popular kids at school. Park is insecure of his appearance, being very short and not very masculine. Although his family is very loving he feels as a disappointment to his father, because instead of taking up his father’s interests, instead, he is interested in comics, and alternative music. Even though Park gets along with the popular crowd, he still feels like an outcast. Once they meet on the bus, Park and Eleanor start to connect. They start sharing comics and music with each other. Meanwhile, Eleanor continues to be bullied at school. People write very rude sexual remarks on her schoolbooks. At home, she continues to be verbally abused by her stepfather. Eleanor tries to hide the terror of her life at home from Park. Eleanor doesn’t except Park’s gifts to her, not understanding why he’s so delightful, and generous. One day, Park expresses his love and affection for her, but she doesn’t know how to handle it. She knows she would never be allowed to have a boyfriend. Eleanor meets Park’s family, but it does not go well.
She leaves in tears because Park’s mother thinks she is strange, and does not approve. After Park gets in a fight on the bus while sticking up for Eleanor, Park's mother believes Eleanor is causing his bad behavior and grounds him from seeing her. While his father, is proud of Park for defending his girlfriend. It's the first time that Park's father shows him respect. After Park’s mother sees Eleanor’s family, and how bad her home environment is, she apologizes for judging her. Eleanor is given permission to stay at their house and eat there any time. She has to lie and tell her family she is staying at a girl friend’s
home. One night, Park's mom lets them go on a date, so they go to a pizza and ice cream place, and shops. They even hold hands and talk about going to prom together. When Eleanor gets home, her wonderful day is ruined. She sees all of her personal possessions ripped up or broken. She is tired of her stepfather’s abusive behavior towards her. She goes to Park's house… In my opinion, this is a very strong, inspirational book. I enjoyed reading it very much. Even though this is just some fictional book, it made me realize that there’s actually many young children in the world that are bullied at school, or abused at home daily. It makes me sad, and kind of angry to think that these horrific things are still happening to innocent people today. One of my favorite parts in the book was when Eleanor and Park got to go on a date; it was probably one of the only parts in the book that Eleanor had a lot of fun, and happiness. Overall, I think this is a very strong author and I hope to read more of her books in the future.

This happiness is due to the fact that she is at Hill House and has a sense of belonging. Therefore, Hill House feels in control of Eleanor because even after the drastic events from the previous night, she is still feeling better than ever as a result of being in Hill House even though it is only the second night there. She repeats to herself that she is finally happy and keeps trying to convince herself that she is happy to make it seem believable. After Mrs. Dudley calls the group down for breakfast, Eleanor feels a chill go down her back while in the dining room after leaving Luke alone and then takes quick notice to him holding a match up to the wall. Then she realizes there is writing on the wall written in
She would mostly be alone and sit by herself being buried in books or watching cartoons. In high school she attended a program for troubled adolescents and from there she received a wide range of support from helping her get braces to helping her get information to attend community college. (59) Even with this she was already too emotionally unstable due to her family issues and felt like she couldn’t go through with her dreams to travel and even go into the art of culinary. She suffers from psychological problems such as depression and worries constantly about almost every aspect in her life from work to family to her boyfriend and just hopes that her life won’t go downhill. (60) Overall Kayla’s family structure shows how different is it now from it was in the 1950’s as divorce rates have risen and while before Kayla’s type of family structure was rare now it is becoming more common. This story helps illustrate the contributions of stress that children possess growing up in difficult homes in which they can’t put their own futures first they must, in some cases, take care of their guardian’s futures first or others around them. Again, this adds into the inequality that many face when it comes to being able to climb up the ladder and become successful regardless of where one
As a child grows, many people influence their development as a person. Some people impact more than others, and a select few really leave their mark. In Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” several characters play this role. Among them, Miss Maudie Atkinson, a woman who proves herself a strong character, prevails as the one who has the greatest impact on Scout Finch, the protagonist of this novel. As Scout matures and grows up, her views on the world around her change. Through subtle yet effective ways, Miss Maudie teaches Scout many life lessons about being humble, judging, and attitude, all of which ultimately have a great effect on the kind of person Scout develops into and her outlook on the world.
This book starts out by the awesome threesome, Emily (also known as Em), Hillary, and Jennie skipping through the hallway with their arms linked tightly together. They have been best friends ever since they could remember. During the summer, Em and Hill went to Colorado to ski. Usually Jennie goes to, but this year she didn’t. Em and Hill could feel Jennie slipping away from the awesome threesome. All Jennie did was flirt with Paul Smith. Jennie got chosen to represent the school in a test called Star Student. It is a test to see how smart you are. The one, who wins, will get ten thousand dollars and a medal. Jennie is so smart and perfect that Hillary and Em cant take it anymore and they start being very cruel to her. They ignore her and they do stuff without her. She gets very upset and she says the notebook she writes in is her only friend. She thinks no one likes.
Park is quite clearly confused, and throughout this whole conversation, has barely any idea what his mother is even talking about. However, the most important part of this scene is later, when Park’s father enters his room looking for his mother, saying softly from the doorway for her to come to bed. “‘Your mother just wants you to be happy,’ he said to Park. ‘Don’t puss out on our account’” (190), and afterwards helps her up with care and leaves his bedroom. This caring and love that is shown in this scene between Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan further plays into the theme, showing readers how true love stories can show themselves after many years, and what that looks
At the age of ten, most children are dependent on their parents for everything in their lives needing a great deal of attention and care. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons’ use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons’ own experiences as a young girl.

Most love stories start with love at first sight but not books written by Rainbow Rowell. Those books were written by Rainbow Rowell. Rowell wrote a book called “Eleanor and Park” which is a love story with a strange start. Rowell was born in Nebraska on February 24, 1973. Love and romance are what Rainbow likes to write books about, but they find love in a strange way. The characters in the story do not like each in the beginning, but at the end, they love each other.
The first point I will be talking about are the characters. The main character is Anke, Anke is a freshman in high school struggling with her family and school. She finally once she joins the school's volleyball team where you have to yell “mine” in order to hit the ball. Now Anke finds her inner voice she never thought she had. Yaicha, Anke’s older sister is quite the opposite of Anke. Yaicha is noticed and not
Eyeliner like with Eleanor, symbolizes how Park likes girly things. Park unlike Jaime and Josh, hates football, or anything manly in general, such as pheasant hunting, “Park hated football. He cried when his dad took him pheasant hunting. Nobody in the neighborhood could ever tell who he was dressed as on Halloween…..And he kind of wanted his mom to give him blond highlights. Park knew he was different” (Rowell 104). Park and Eleanor essentially fit like two pieces in a puzzle. Although, as Park begins to accept Eleanor’s appearance, and her self-confidence goes up, as she freely expresses herself, so does Park. Park learns from Eleanor that it does not matter what other people think, but how one feels about themselves. When Park does put on makeup, he faces hostility from his dad at first, but eventually accepts Park’s new appearance, while other kids continue to stare. By the virtue of their love, both Eleanor and Park accept themselves. Both accept each other for their differences and even love their differences, from the rest of the kids at school. As they remain as outsiders in their world, they have each other for love and support. Both Eleanor and Park discover their true self, through clothing and makeup, as self
