It takes courage to stand up for your convictions, especially if you know there will be consequences. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a novel by Mildred D. Taylor tells the story of a young girl named Cassie Logan. Cassie is a girl in 1933 who stands up for the rights of her family and friends. She proves her courage by standing up for her brother, Little Man, getting revenge on the bus full of white children, and standing up against Lillian Jean Simms. Cassie follows through with her convictions, knowing there may be consequences. “‘Alright Cassie,’ she sighed, turning to me, ‘ome on and get yours’” (Taylor, 27). When the Logan children returned back to school, they were promised brand new books. The children received the “new” books, but they noticed a chart that proved the white school had passed the books down to the kids. Cassie’s brother, Little Man, likes everything clean. He refused the book due to the horrible quality. He looking inside the book, and noticed the chart. He threw a fit. His teacher switched him. Lillian Jean is a white girl who goes to school with the Logan kids. When Cassie went with Big Ma to Strawberry, she saw Lillian Jean Simms. ¨It was then that I saw Lillian Jean Simms.” (Taylor, 113). This proves that Cassie was not eager to see Miss. Simms and she despises her. She got mad, and ordered Cassie to get in the street and apologize. Cassie refuses and Big Ma makes her do what Lillian Jean ordered. Mr.Simms comes to investigate, and Cassie ends up having three people against her. After Big Ma tells her to say sorry, Cassie says, ¨´I´m sorry...M-Miz...Lillian Jean.´¨ (Taylor, 116).
