Makaela Kicklighter Warriors Don?t Cry ?Gods warriors don?t cry?. Grandma India says this to Melba Patillo Beals when she is crying because she is scared. This quote sticks with Melba throughout her whole journey at Central High School. This makes Melba be strong and courageous, even when she is nervous or uneasy. In the book Warriors Don?t Cry Melba is a strong young women. She fights for integration at Central, where she attended, throughout the whole book. She says ?The task that remains is to cope with our interdependence ? to see ourselves reflected in every other human being and to respect and honor our differences? (pg. 189). She is saying that no matter what happens to her she just has to make peace with it
In the book Warriors Don't Cry, Melba has a very strong support system. Her mother, and her grandmother are very big supporters in this book. In the segregated south, white people had power and black people didn't. These nine black student that entered an all white school had very many people discourage them. Whites talked about them, looked at them, and made fun of them. Melba was one out of the nine black students that attended Central High school, but since she had a very supportive family, she didn't let anyone get to her. With this and many other acts, integration such as Melba showed that the white segregationist was a fragile illusion. Melba's story makes clear that the power of whites lie, to some extent, in the consent of the black
“ SOmetimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever.” Keri Russell. In the novel “ The Wednesday Wars” by Gary D Schmidt Hollings father decides that his sister is not going to college. Although Mr.Hoodhood has said no Heather can still make her own decisions according to what she wants in her life, so that she makes the results of her life and changes what she wants to change. In this situation heather has been beaten, but I think that Mr.hoodhood is wrong because you should go to college no matter how old you are. Just because your parent says you can’t do something doesn’t mean you can’t do it as an adult.
Courage is an attribute that someone has when they stand up for what they believe in. In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie shows some acts of courage. Cassie faces some challenges and she handles them in different ways. Cassie shows courage by standing up for Little Man, volunteering to be splashed by the bus for revenge, and standing up to Lillian Jean. I think that she did the right thing when she stood up for Little Man. She was trying to make things right.
Courage is having to stand up for people who are being treated unfairly or if they have different skin color. In Mildred Taylor’s book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Stacey has to show courage by standing up for his friends and family. Stacey is a seventh grader at Great Faith Elementary School and is the oldest Logan kid. when Papa is gone he feels like he needs to be the man of the house and watch out for his younger siblings. Stacey had to show courage when he helped Little Man get back at the bus, takes the blame for the cheat notes, and took T.J. home when he was injured.
In the 1930’s, turmoil has erupted in Maycomb, Alabama all because the young lady Mayella Ewell has accused African-American Tom Robinson of raping and sexually assaulting her. Yet, Mayella Ewell has no power because of her race, class, and gender. At the time, Maycomb, Alabama was at the peak of segregation against African-Americans. Mayella Ewell may be white, but that does not mean her class, gender, nor her race give her power.
The battle for integration which Beals fought impacted her and developed her character. She not only battles with her surroundings, but who she is and what she wants. Beals learns not to cry or show weakness, she learns she is a warrior, but she also learns that it requires sacrifice and the mantra "warriors don't cry" becomes a cry itself for the parts of her life she has surrendered. Beals says "I think only the warrior exists in me now. Melba went away to hide" (246). She seems both proud and sad for what she has accomplished, but ultimately her stance as a warrior not only changed her, but the nation's view of race.
Moments in life make up a person as scenes make up a movie. Celie had to suffer all her life. She gave up on some of the joys that family could have brought. She was abused and beaten because of the way she looked. No one looked underneath to see what she had to offer. Her sister knew, but she was taken away and Shug also learned, but she never stayed. It wasn’t until Celie understood her worth that it made a difference. Once, Celie knew she could do anything she wanted, that was when she made a difference. She chose a better life and became something. She became something without the help of the people that hated her. When we fight, fight for our rights and freedoms that is when we can become something that others envy. We have to love ourselves before someone can truly love us.
The first part of the book gives an account of Immaculée’s family background. The love she experienced from her parents and her three brothers is illustrated. Her parents cared for everybody, particularly the poor. Because of the love with which she grew up, she never realised that she was living in a country where hatred against the Tutsi, her tribe, was rampant. It was not until she was asked to stand up in class by her teacher during an ethnic roll call that she realised that her neighbours were not what she thought them to be – good and friendly. After struggling to get into high school and university, not because she was not qualified but because of discrimination against her ethnic background, she worked hard to prove that if women are given opportunities to...
Many times in the world, differences have lead to hate. Think of Martin Luther King, for example, who stood for fighting against one of the largest differences. A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, is one of many examples of differences leading to hate. Gene and Finny, who somehow managed to become friends, have completely different views of each other. Finny wanted to be friends with Gene, but had trouble facing the reality that Gene felt differently. Gene became jealous over Finny’s difference to himself. Difference has led to hate, once more, and pain has again resulted, first mentally and emotionally, then finally physically.
After reading this passage wonderfully written by Audre Lorde, I believe it's about two things. Racism. The belief in the inherent superiority of one race over all others and thereby the right to dominance, manifest and implied, and also how women respond to racism, in which she defines her response as " My response to racism is anger."
Chinua Achebe is stating that in every differing society of the world, humans are, at the core, exactly the same in that we all depend upon and gain strength from the unity and similarity of our particular cultures. Without our undisturbed patterned groupings, our cultures become fragmented and ultimately end in annihilation. We as humans are only stable in the midst of societal harmony.
When two groups of people are in constant battle with other, people begin to assume things about the other group of people. Humans tend to make assumptions about other people without ever really knowing them. However, my so-called enemy is a clear depiction that not everyone is how you picture them to be. And in reality you can befriend someone you would never think you would. This film touches on the question of what does it mean to be human. To me, what it means to be human is to persevere. In a time where you feel like your world is ending, or everything your working towards seems to just fall short, that the world isn’t over. We as humans have the ability to pick ourselves back up, work harder and change the world around us. Although we may feel we are just one person and we don’t have the power to make an impact, this isn’t true. This film shows that, that by coming together we have the power to break the stereotypes and create a sense of peace and serenity that we never thought could be
From past, present, to future, conflict has defined history. In a world full of battles, revolutions, and seemingly random acts of evil, it is impossible to escape the reality of it all. Many of today’s great classics have been inspired by generations of conflict. Using World War II as the background for John Knowles’ novel A Separate Peace brings up the question if it is ever possible to live in a world without fear, hate and ultimately inevitable conflict. Knowles uses contrasting characters, the innate nature of humans, and contradictory symbols in order to reflect that conflict is inevitable.
“You can choose courage or you can choose comfort but you cannot have both” brene brown
For thousands of years humans have had conflicts ranging from the Hundred Years war to World War II. Every set of conflicts we have seen over the course of history has brought new challenges and obstacles for those trying to survive but there is one thing that has remained constant, we must become mentally and physically stronger if we want to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Throughout All the Light We Cannot See, Anthony Doerr proves that in times of conflict one must undergo change in order to survive.
