A tiny town in Connecticut. Is this setting of Among Friends by Caroline B. Cooney. The time of year is from the beginning of the school year, to the end of the school year. The main characters in this book are Jennie, Paul, Emily, Hillary, Jared, and Ansley. All the main characters are juniors in high school. Jennie is part of the awesome threesome. She always gets good grades on tests even if she doesn’t study. People envy her for that. Paul is also know as Paul Classified because no one knows anything about him, they don’t even know his middle name. Jennie likes Paul and she flirts with him all the time. Emily and Hillary are part of the awesome threesome too. Jared and Ansley are boyfriend and girlfriend. They both dislike Jennie because she is so popular and intelligent. The conflict in this book is man vs. himself. Jennie has to decide whether she wants to stay part of the awesome threesome, or make a state record by winning the prize for the smartest kid in the state 2 years in a row like her parents want her to. This book starts out by the awesome threesome, Emily (also known as Em), Hillary, and Jennie skipping through the hallway with their arms linked tightly together. They have been best friends ever since they could remember. During the summer, Em and Hill went to Colorado to ski. Usually Jennie goes to, but this year she didn’t. Em and Hill could feel Jennie slipping away from the awesome threesome. All Jennie did was flirt with Paul Smith. Jennie got chosen to represent the school in a test called Star Student. It is a test to see how smart you are. The one, who wins, will get ten thousand dollars and a medal. Jennie is so smart and perfect that Hillary and Em cant take it anymore and they start being very cruel to her. They ignore her and they do stuff without her. She gets very upset and she says the notebook she writes in is her only friend. She thinks no one likes. While she is at the star student contest, during the first test she runs out of the room. She never came back. People are very worried about her. Some people are saying it’s because her parents pushed her too much, or because she was depressed, and some say she got murdered.
There is a slight glimmer of hope when the school year ends and the girls all receive their report cards. They stand eagerly in the hallway, none of them can break their gaze at the slips of paper in their teacher’s hands. Pashtana finishes 15th in her class and in this moment looks forward to a new year in the 8th grade. Unfortunately, Pashtana and her family were living off of $7 a week, a dollar to spend a day. She soon got married to her cousin and has not been back to school since their last day.
The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.
Titus, Ella, Angeline, and Pride. Titus is a sweet, strong, loving father; Ella is a kind, firm, loving mother; Angeline is Maddie’s older sister, who always does everything perfectly; and Pride is Maddie’s unhealthy baby brother.
2) What is the main conflict in the book? Is it external or internal? How is this conflict resolved throughout the course of the book?
The main conflict is Ellen’s inner conflict and the effect that her repressed feelings have on her life and her attitudes.
2. The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are “outsiders.” They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.

I decided to compose my book report on Jack Welch’s book, Winning. It relays many of the same themes that our book does. I first came across this book when I was reading an article about Jack Welch and his years at GE, at the bottom they had advertisements for his two books; Jack: Straight from the Gut and Winning. The bright yellow background and Jack’s big smile, on the cover, caught my eye and all of the praise for him and the advance praise for Winning reeled me in. There is praise all over the back portion of the cover, from Tom Brokaw and Bill Gates to Warren Buffett and Rudy Giulliani. My expectations of the book were quite high because of all the kind words on the back, but Jack Welch never let me down, this book should be a required read for any Business grad.
Karana lives near a little cove in San Nicolas. Coral Cove has plenty of fish and cool water. Karana is a brave and has learned how to find food and stay alive on the island all alone. Captain Orlov and the Aleut tribe have visited the island to see if they can hunt otter on their land. Chowig and Orlov have a disagreement and finally for half of their profits in the form of jewelry. After hunting season was complete Chowing asked for payment and and they can’t agree on a sum and a fight breaks out and many of the Ghalat-at people are killed including Chief Chowig. Kimki was then chosen as chief.
I believe the conflict in the story is an internal one. I think it is the conflict between the old woman's will power and Mother Nature. She encounters many obstacles that would influence most people to give up but she has motivation to get her task done. These encounters include a bush catching onto her dress, a scarecrow frightening her and discouragement from a white man. She also had to climb hills, cross streams and crawl under barbed wire fences which is certainly not considered an easy task for an elderly woman.. If I was forced to deal with these obstacles I know that I would most likely have turned around but her will power was too strong to let Mother Nature win.
Into Thin Air written by Jon Krakauer describes the author’s personal experience during the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. The author pulled me in this book in many ways. Reading the blurb, it gave the reader an understanding that the book was going to be a personal account of facing life or death against nature. The book also gave hints that some of the costly moves that the climbers and sherpas made affected the outcome of their lives along with the people around them. Another part of the book that pulled me into the book was the hard decisions the climbers had to make to make it likely some of the climbers would survive. For example, Stuart Hutchinson, one of the climbers, created a search party to look for Yasuko Namba and Beck Weathers.
A diverse book allows students to learn about different backgrounds and experiences. Don’t Call Me Special: A First Look at Disability by Pat Thomas and illustrated by Lesley Harker is a great example of a diverse book. Pat Thomas introduces the topic of disabilities while allowing the reader to create a positive discussion around the topic.
The fiction, Emperor of China: Self-portrait of K’ang-Hsi, is written by Jonathan D. Spence in 1974. The additional translated appendixes display K’ang Hsi’s seventeen letters and his final valedictory edict that hidden from the palace. This book report will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of reading this book and how this book affects the reader.
What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day is a book in the realistic fiction genre written by Pearl Cleage and it was inspired by the author’s daughter Deignan Lomax along with her husband Mr.Zaron W.
