not racist but ‘’ by Anita Heiss is an anthology of poems reflecting the writer personal experience and thoughts as a proud, strong, contemporary Australian woman with Aboriginal identity. ,“Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity" as William Wordsworth, the English Romantic poet, stated. Poetry is a way to express vast emotions and feelings in a way which is unique to the poet. Poetry uses forms and conventions to suggest differential interpretation to words, or to evoke emotive responses. A poem interpretation lays in the person’s capability to understand and take human emotions and each poem has multiple readings, and every person who reads a poem will interpret it differently.Racism ,a misconception or a myth?” The collection of poems "I'm not racist but..." by Anita Heiss shows how racism is embedded in the human race and although not always spoken is there hidden and ready to hurt people. Anita Heiss ’s poetry collection is emphasising the permanence and the anger felt by the victims of racism . The poem raises awareness about racism as an ongoing problem. Dr.Anita Heiss is an Indigenous Literacy Day Ambassador, a member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales and is one of Australia's most prolific and well-known authors of Indigenous literature. She brings a positive attitude and by using humour and wit she promotes Indigenous literature and is active against racism. The poem with the same title as the collection ’’I am not a racist but…’’ she uses satire to show how easy racism is not recognised or played down. She was hurt at a very young age by racist attitude and words as she wrote about her school years in the poem ‘’Making... ... middle of paper ... ...derstand what they are and are going through. If the reader belongs to another minority or is a new emigrant to Australia will identify itself with the anger and frustration other readers might feel guilty just because they thing they belong to a privileged group. I felt the injustice of inequality that emerges form this poem collection and the uselessness. There were no suggestions how repair what was done . The author shows in the poem that the hurt and anger are part of the aboriginal identity. And I think being aware of what we are is one of the positive messages of the poem collection. The past cannot be changed just by saying sorry. Emotion figures in relations of power and confrontations to change society. Rage over racism is inescapable, necessary. Making that anger known and speaking about pain have been important in the history of marginalised groups.
