While reading the semi-autobiographical, Bastard Out of Carolina, by Dorothy Allison, I was stunned by the explicit nature of the novel. We were introduced to a young narrator and protagonist named, Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright. Bone's family, like that of the author, experienced a impoverished life, all the while she tried to find her place in a society that had literally labeled her “illegitimate.” Merriam-Webster defines illegitimate as being: (1) not recognized as lawful offspring; specifically: born of parents not married to each other (2) not rightly deduced or inferred- illogical (3) departing for the regular- erratic (4) not sanctioned by law- illegal (5) not authorized by good usage. As a young girl, how would it feel being known as illogical, erratic, illegal, not for good usage, and, in Bone's case, being constantly reminded of not knowing the identity of your birth father? According to helpguide.org, a non-profit online resource for mental health, the article “Child Abuse & Neglect” addressed how constantly being told you are stupid or no good, as a child, is very difficult to overcome. You may accept these negative thoughts and believe them to be reality. In this research paper, I am looking to unveil the truth of child abuse by focusing on the history, myths, and victim rehabilitation of child abuse.

Child Maltreatment is generally defined as any acts brought upon by a parent or caregiver of a child that results in harm or potential for harm. Child Maltreatment includes physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and neglect. When a child exhibits signs of any form of abuse it typically becomes the responsibility of Child Protective Services to remove the child from their home and place them in foster care. However there is a controversy on whether removing the child from their home or if family preservations are best for the child than taking them out and placing them in foster care.
I briefly summarize the show and the different storylines that are happening. I describe in more detail the depiction of moral violations in the series, while utilizing real-world analyses that also
According to Tennyson Center for Children, “A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds in the U.S.” (“Child Abuse in America”). One cannot fathom the idea of why anyone would intentionally hurt the innocent children of today’s society. Child abuse happens with children of all ages, gender, and religions. Likewise, the world can be identified as a harsh place, where child abuse occurs around the world, and is even evident in the United States. There are many factors that contribute to this repulsive behavior. Physical, sexual, and psychological cruelty are effects of child abuse.
“Simply having children does not make mothers,” said john A. Shedd (“John”). When it comes to child maltreatment this is especially true, if a parent does not know how to take care of a child, they can abuse or neglect their child. The definition that the Centers for disease Control and Prevention uses is, “Any act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or any other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child.” Maltreatment can be split into two umbrella categories, acts of omission or acts of commission. Acts of omission are most commonly known as neglect, and can include not meeting the child’s physical, emotional, educational, or medical needs. An act of commission is most commonly physical abuse, but can also extend to the psychological or sexual abuse of a child (“Child Maltreatment”). Child maltreatment is a problem worldwide; the only way to stop it is to give parents a better understanding of the issue.
Children who grow up being abused physically or mentally will develop problems and the response by children to abuse and neglect could manifest in behaviors of delinquency such as dropping out of school, drugs, alcohol abuse, sexual promiscuity, prostitution, self-mutilation, stealing and other crimes and offenses. It does not matter whether you are born into a wealthy, middle class or poor family; children who are abused commit most of the same acts of delinquency.
Child Abuse is an extremely significant conflict around the world; it is the physical maltreatment or sexual molestation of a child. There are 4 main types of victimization against children. Those containing physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect. Physical abuse is when a parent or guardian wounds their child in the form of injuring them or in any other manner causing them agony. Emotional abuse also recognized as mental abuse is when they mentally upset a child’s feelings that may generate trauma. Sexual abuse can probably be characterized as someone forcing a child in an act of unwanted sexual relationships. Neglect is the form of not providing a child with their basic physical and emotional necessities. Most people are forming organizations to prevent from future child abuse occurring but most people are also not getting involved in such dangerous crimes. Usually more than 90% of abusers tend to be people children know, love, or trust, according to Bright Futures 4 Kids.
According to Washington Statue ??Abuse or neglect? means sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, or injury of a child by any person under circumstances which cause harm to the child?s health, welfare, or safety? or the negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child by a person responsible for or providing care to the child.? (N/A,2016). The signs of possible child abuse include, but are not limited to, sudden behavior change, untreated medical issues, difficulties in school, lack of adult attention, the child making excuses to stay away from home. Parents can also show signs, in the form of, showing little interest in the child, blaming the child for the child?s problems. The parent could ask the teacher to use severe punishment on a child and find harsh treatment acceptable and teacher must be aware of all the signs and must act. As a teacher, you are required by law to report child abuse. According to the Department of Social and Health Services (2016), here are some steps to follow when reporting child abuse.
Maltreated children have impaired cognitive, behavioral, and social development. The severity of impairment varies on the child’s age during maltreatment, the subtype of maltreatment, and continuous maltreatment through multiple developmental stages (Cowell, Cicchetti, Rogosch, & Toth, 2015). The study done by Alink, Cicchetti, Kim, and Rogosch (2012) focused on the effects on social functioning and the hypothalamic-pituitary -adrenocortical (HPA) axis of maltreated children (Alink et al., 2012). The data was gathered from 125 maltreated children and 111 nonmaltreated children, who attended a week long summer camp for two consecutive years (Alink et al., 2012). The researchers measured social functioning through counselor and peer evaluations.

A 19-year-old new mother, named Sheryl asked her boyfriend to watch her 8-month-old baby while she went shopping. Her boyfriend kindly agreed assuming that the baby would fall asleep, and he would continue watching the game. However like most newborn babies, Sheryl’s child was a little fussy and was crying. That caused Sheryl’s boyfriend to get annoyed and agitated. He went over to the baby, picked him up and shook him hard. When Sheryl came home she found her baby injured, unfortunately what happened to Sheryl’s baby it’s something that happens to many children in America every day.
Child abuse defines any form of physical, sexual or emotional maltreatment to a child. It also includes lack of care that may harm a child, or ill-use of power to the point of mistreatment that breaches trust. According to Department of Children and Families, child abuse can manifest in a child’s home, organization or schools that the child interrelates (Invernizzi & Williams, 2011). In our world today, child abuse is a problem that needs to be addressed to protect the rights of our children. Despite the various societal challenges relating to infancy and teenage generation, child abuse stands out as a significant evidence of moral degradation in the society. It is the cause of early physical and mental depressions that broadly describes the
