Quiet leadership is already feasible, and this is what society needs (Cain, 2012). For years, people have underestimated what an introvert can truly contribute to his society. People perceive introverts as incapable, unassertive, and inferior people who are unsuited for leadership. Conversely, introverts are more than what people think. These four reasons can prove how more efficient, more capable and more innovative leaders introverts are than extroverts. First, introverts prefer less talk, but more endeavor. Endeavor is what initiates change. A true leader must know to take action for his people, rather than keeping tattered promises. Furthermore, every word that a leader must say to his people must thought out carefully. Analyzing a situation and truly seeing the underlying problem can greatly contribute to a reliable solution. Commitment is also a factor for efficient leadership. Through focus and patience, a leader will always be unified with his people. Thinking independently can also help a leader to craft creative ideas and solutions for his people. Given these points, introverts do possess an innovative leadership. Although society has perceived introversion as a problem because people were too gregarious to realize how much introversion can bring to this world. Introverts do not need to act like extroverts in order to become that “charismatic” leader that people expect them to be; instead be an introverted leader that the people needs to see. For this reason, introversion cannot be fixed, for there is nothing wrong with it. This is a social issue that needs to be addressed. There are so many introverts all over the world that are being oppressed because of cultural bias. The same thing goes in leadership. If the countrymen truly know their leader and choses the one that is truly capable through actions and not through words, it can address a myriad of problems happening in society. According to Carl Jung, everyone has some degree of both introversion and extraversion, but people often tend to lean one way or another (Cherry,2012). People who are introverted tend to focus on the inner world, ideas, concepts, and be reflective. I have a moderate preference for Introversion because when I am at home, school or around unfamiliar people, I tend to be shy, reserved, and will always think twice before saying something. Generally speaking, introverts prefer quiet environments with minimal stimulation. Introverts are more likely to experience intense stress levels that can last for a long time as they strive to figure out the possible cause of the traumatizing events. It can be difficult for introverts to accommodate other people after they are hurt and need time alone before they recover from the trauma (Jung, 2014).
As a primarily introverted person, I shy away from extraversion which can deter my people and communication skills. While I do not lack interpersonal and social (people) skills, these areas to consider for improvement. To be an effective leader, one must be able to communicate well within small and large groups. An effective leader must have effective social judgement skills. While I do not lack self-confidence or the other traits that are needed for great leaders, I do realize the need to enhance my communication skills significantly to become a greater leader.
The first source that I looked at was the TED talk episode of Susan Cain titled “Power of Introverts”. In her presentation, Susan Cain talks about how she believes that Western culture society is bound to the idea that being an extrovert is less fitting than being an extrovert in school, work force, etc. In the video Susan states that, “in past history, great minds such as Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Rosa parks were all introverts and they were important transformative leaders in society”. Cain’s aim here is not to attack extroverts, or to state that they are not as good as introverts. Her argument is that the introverts have an important role to play in many areas of society that is now often being overlooked. One example would be that, introverts have greater willingness to listen to others and their input makes them better leaders than is commonly known. To conclude, she added thoughtfulness and tenacity of introverts, and their keen capability to work independently, often gives them an advantage in creative enterprises like art and scientific improvement, also in more intellectual industries such as science and engineering. In particular, Cain highlights just how vital it is to encourage and support the introvert’s strange talents, and to be patient in dealing with their intimacy or familiarity. I fall into a unique, more introverted and innovative personality type. Generally speaking, leaders are often expected to be extroverts. That seems to be the societal ideal.
