1) Has teaching improved your “on the job” performance in the fire service or vice versa, and if so in what ways has it done so?
“Teaching has both hurt me and helped me in the fire service. I have to keep up with the latest trends in the fire service. This is an advantage to most people as the fire service because it is reared that most crews keep up with current trends. Unfortunately, officers like there (old School) training so what I know is sometimes looked down upon as (textbook) firefighting.
2) How do you balance work, teaching and home life so that they all function smoothly together?
“Well, it has not always been easy, but my family has been my biggest asset. They understand that I love my job, but also understand that I love teaching. Teaching requires me to make several trips all over the state and although my family doesn’t like it they do understand. There are times when it gets stress full though.
3) Do you integrate work with teaching or vice versa, and if so in what ways do you do so?
“Yes, my officer is also an SCFA instructor so we do teach allot of rookies and recruits on shift. We spend 8 hours a day teaching then complete the normal shift on the apparatus as an active crew.
4) Would you be able to take on a full time teaching position immediately?
“No, I’m currently on workers comp due to an accident I sustained on shift. I lost my left leg working an MVA, so I can’t teach while on workers comp. but I have been offered a full time position with the SCFA if I cannot return to the truck.
5) Is there a difference between you work load in regards to teaching and you full time job, if so can you explain them to me?
“Yes, my teach...

5) Why did you chose this career specialty?
“Just like we teach our new students, every person in the fire service should contribute a specialty, it helps set you apart and we can’t all learn everything. It’s just too much. I first started specialized in water rescue. I’m a PADI certified dive master and rescue diver. Later I realized that I enjoyed being in front of a classroom much more. I could make a bigger difference and do it more often. Once I realized this I went out and got as many course teaching certifications as I could. I just can’t describe it, it’s a great feeling to see a student who didn’t understand something or something clicks with them. I guess I do it for selfish reasons, I just love teaching.”

For the lead teacher interview assignment, I had the opportunity to sit down with and interview my son’s EC teacher from last year, Mrs. Hamm. Since my son started at the school last year, Mrs. Hamm has helped him in so many different ways. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching for over 20 years from her home state of Pennsylvania and more currently at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC for the last 12 years and recently awarded “Teacher of the Year”. Mrs. Hamm, up until this school year, was the main EC teacher for all grades Kindergarten through fifth grade at Mount Energy Elementary School. As of the present school year, the school district made the determination that she was over the acceptable number of students. As a result, they decided to hire an additional EC teacher and assistant to teach grades 3-5th and Mrs. Hamm would teach grades K-2. Mrs. Hamm was the teacher of 18 students until this decision was made, now with grades K-2, she has 9 students in her class.

In today's fast paced world often times we don’t realize how we go through life at full speed never slowing down to just stop and take a breath. Always trying to get to the next appointment, teachers meeting, and get togethers with friends and family; time is fleeting. For the people out there that have no problem with organizing their life I applaud you. Being able to manage everything without missing a beat is something I wish I was accomplished at. But my outside obligations to work, and family are constantly getting in the way of my schooling.
To begin out of the countless professions one has to chose from in the world today I have chosen to become a teacher. The one belief I had about teaching that has changed since I began this unit, is that all teachers, more or less, taught in the same way. Perhaps this is a belief that I had formed from my own time at school, where all my teachers taught in the same way; some were more or less effective, but I wasn’t aware of them using theories or methods as such, more that they were or weren’t kind people. This belief has changed and it has really opened my ideas to the many creative models, and instructional methods a teacher can use.
“I wanted to become a teacher to be able to make a positive difference on the future of children. For me, it is fulfilling challenge, stimulating the next generation to become lifelong learners. I have always been grateful to my mom (who is a retired teacher) for implanting values in me. I feel I should contribute what I have learned and experienced over the years. My motivation also extended from watching my parents, both my mother and father are employed as primary and secondary teachers in public schools, respectively. Also on my mother’s side her parents were both worked in secondary education. Whilst I didn’t realise the exact power of their influence until recently, I have come to note that it was probably their enthusiasm and love for their job, their constant desire to learn and make a difference in the world through education that has influenced me into choosing my career path. Their roles have also made me realise the importance of teachers and the power they have to help those in need and change lives.
Individuals who enter the field of education reply to the question why teach with various answers. There is beauty, joy, and fulfillment in this profession, and these spirit-lifting emotions are the result of watching annually as a new group of children enter to learn and leave with the knowledge to achieve. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on the profession first by stating that teaching is not the career for everyone. He goes on to say, that the education profession has the ability to present the “unique opportunity” for individuals to cast a positive influence upon others (Why Teach, 2000, p.1). The smiles received from a room full of students when as a whole their individual needs, both educational and personal have been catered to, prompts a burst of passion in every teacher.
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. I loved working in the school environment; coming in contact with children everyday made me realize how much I would enjoy teaching a classroom full of students.
