Nutrition science is a very broad major and there are many paths you can take after you finish your undergrad degree. One option I have been considering is continuing my education in graduate school and pursuing nutrition epidemiology. Epidemiology is the study and analysis of distributions and how nutrition affects disease and other health factors in a population. The professional in this career field that I chose for my interview was Dr. Heather Eicher-Miller. She is a professor at Purdue University in the Nutrition Science department and is currently studying food insecurity in rural areas. Within the course of my interview three reoccurring theme kept coming up; consciousness of self, consciousness of context, and empathy. Of course, Dr. …show more content…
Eicher-Miller what was the most difficult thing she had experienced in her field she said, getting her Ph.D. had the most barriers. She mentioned how many of her fellow classmates would drop out along the way and how it made her question why she was continuing her education (Personal Communication, March 2, 2018). A big part of pursuing a Ph.D. is knowing your own goals and having the persistence to achieve them. Being “in tune with your emotions, values, strengths, limitation and worldview” are critical for consciousness of self (Shankman, Allen, & Haber-Curran, 2015, p. 21). Throughout your life it is important to clarify goals and why you were doing what you are doing. Being true to your self and reflecting on that is key to a successful in career. It is part of my goals and values to eat healthy and be nutritionally sufficient so picking a career path that reflect this was very important to me. I also know that I enjoy helping other and want to make an impact on people lives. Knowing why I originally fell in love with nutrition can serve as motivation as a further my education and might have doubts about what I am …show more content…
Analyzing the group and assessing the environment factors allows us to understand why different diseases or health issues are happening and how we can help prevent them in the future. Looking at symbolic elements, role elements, interactive elements, and context elements can help in determining what people eat and why. One phrase that I found extremely accurate for my career path is, “Being on the balcony” (Shankman, Allen, & Haber-Curran, 2015, p. 220). While conducting research in different population It is important to look at the whole picture and not fixate on just a few people. By gaining a bigger perspective it can make much easier to make a hypothesis and
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Pollan’s main point is introducing science into our food system has had more of a negative impact than a positive one, we should go back to eating more of a traditional diet. I believe food science has given us
Focusing on pursuing a career you like is important because statistics show fifty-two percent of Americans are unhappy going to work every day because they chose a career they didn’t have an interest in. My ideal job is in the medical field because I’ve always had a passion in helping people. I want to specialize in nurse anesthesia because of the important role they have in society. Nurse anesthesia interests me because of the tasks they do, the advanced education path they must take, and the history behind the profession.
Since a young age, I always felt inclined towards pursuing a career in the health care field; daydreaming about myself working at a clinic or hospital and making a positive impact on someone’s life. When I started college, I decided to major in Biology and explored the different career options the health field had to offer me by shadowing dietitians, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare workers to find my ideal job.
The career I have chosen for my future is to become a registered dental hygienist. It wasn’t until I actually learned what dental hygienists do that influenced my interest from medical to dentistry. The first honest reason I was gravitated to dental hygiene was because of the salary. I didn’t really know what Dental Hygienist actually did until I did some research.
The article by Antonella Arhin that I analyzed shows how to take my general topic (diets and their effects on the Caribbean diaspora and indigenous people) and helped narrow it down to a specific question (the health issues that this can cause i.e. Diabetes). This will assist in coming up with more concise research methods and ways to arrive at these answers. By having a detailed, concise research question it will help me with explaining the significance, as well as the approach that I take and the audience that I plan on targeting. As said previously I believe if I can reach a wider audience especially individuals from all walks of life it will help with them really paying attention to the types of food and also the amount that is consumed. To ensure this the ethnographic and cast study approach are both key, by casting a larger net for information it will help with more descriptive
1.)How does your diet compare to the recommendations you received from the Food Guide Pyramid?
In the United States, nutrition screening is a part of inpatient admission. The Joint Commission requires a nutritional screening to be completed within 24 hours of inpatient admission (Treas & Willkinson, 2014). Proper nutrition is important for staying healthy and is particularly vital for the elderly. For the purpose of this week discussion this learner will concentrate on explaining the health status of a 81 year old patient who presented at the primary care for a routine visit. We observed the patient height is around 72 inches and weight is 135 ponds. We will calculate the patient Body mass index (BMI) and interpret the result. In addition two specific assessments will be perform and included the rationale for each one.

This paper do the research on the potential ecological and human health consequences of Bt plants, including effects on nontarget organisms, food safety, and the development of resistant insect populations.
...it is deciding upon what type of job to do or what type of food to eat the choice you make will have a profound effect effect upon your life. By now I guess almost everyone has heard the saying "you are what you eat" well more correctly would be "you are what you eat and digest". The statement is correct; so the next point to consider is whether the food intake is nutritious or mainly nutrient empty calories. The body requires certain minerals, vitamins and amino acids from food intake to function optimally and if these are not gained from food intake then a diseased state will be arrived at.
Low socio-economic status and its correlates, such as lower education, poverty, and poor health, affect our society as a whole. Inequities in wealth distribution, resource distribution, and quality of life are increasing in the United States and globally. There are many ways to fight this reality, and some a far simpler and more practically applied than others. One smart and simple change may be adapted immediately. It has the possibility to drastically impact the quality of life with those of lower socio-economic status. The proposed change would be to alter the list of foods covered in Americas supplemental nutritional assistance program ( or SNAP), as it could dramatically impact the health of those most likely to suffer from heart disease which is currently the leading cause of death in the United states (AHA). Currently “SNAP benefits can be used to purchase all food products, not including: beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, or tobacco; any nonfood items; vitamins and medicines; foods that will be eaten in the store; or hot foods” (snap.org). The S.N.A.P. program should instead, be only available for use when paying for healthy foods because this policy change would provide better nutritional, medical and economic value to the U.S.
Education plays a dominant role in the lives of students all over the United States. Since most students spend roughly eight to twelve hours in school, it is important to make sure that they are provided with a healthy and nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack.
These three themes combine to support a compelling argument of how truly important it is to gain a greater grasp of one’s subconscious and inner self.
I am inspired to explore the field of dietetics which is very broad and dietitians perform a variety of functions in their jobs. As a dietitian, I can work in a wide variety of positions such as a foodservice manager in commercial or institutional, a community nutritionist, such as the WIC and Headstart, a consultant to major food corporations such as Kelloggs and Kraft or go into sales. I am very interested in working in a position where I can help people develop habits to improve their health. I may eventually go on to graduate school to advance my knowledge of dietetics.
Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
Public health dieticians/nutritionists utilize prevention, promotion and management strategies to encourage communities to make healthy food and lifestyle choices. It is this broad role of public dieticians/nutritionists that allow them to take an integrated approach to their work and to contribute to an integrated health system.
