This week, I followed up with the girls who went to the activity the District offered last Friday. We talked about their goals and the things they are doing in order to meet them. I emailed the lady who did the speech and we are trying to set up a second meeting, so the girls can talk to her again. This week, I had to deal with a lot of drama with another group of girls. I believe since it is April and the school year is almost over, they are under a lot of stress and that is the reason they keep getting in trouble. There was 17 of us on the team; 3 freshmen, 6 sophomores, 1 junior, 7 seniors. Majority of us were at the school because of the head coach, Ed Allen. Last week at practicum was a time of renewed energy. Megan and I had a meeting with one of our supervisors and we discussed our experiences, thoughts, and concerns regarding the placement thus far. Having this conversation before our mid-term evaluation was very meaningful, and at this point, I think that my practicum placement is as good as it could be. Seeing my suggestions be authenticated and incorporated into the volunteer orientation makes me realize that my contributions will have a lasting impact on the community. Though this song is probably the best loved one for non-Koreans, “Gangnam Style” did not even make to the top 10 of music chart when it was released in 2012 in Korea. It was only beginning to be spotlighted when one of the YouTube channel introduced Psy’s Gangnam style music video and captured world’s attention. By this time, one will start to wonder what kind of music Koreans love if most viewed YouTube video (Gangnam style) didn’t captured their attention. Surprisingly, it is hip-hop. However, Hip-hop in Korea is different from that of United States. Over years, hip-hop has changed to suit Korean’s taste, emotion and culture and became one new genre that we often call K Hip-hop.
If everything goes fine then I would get compliments and praise. On the other hand if it did not go well then I would have plenty of comments about how it needed improvement. That was my new job. My first meetings were rough and I was nervous. I never talked loud enough, forgot to announce important events, and always ran out of activities for scouts. I could not keep meetings quite for more than two minutes until I had to stop and patiently wait for silence. The hardest part was keeping control over all of the kids ranging any where from 10 to 17 years old. Kids always wanted to sit out and and it proved difficult getting everyone to participate. Keeping everything under control and going to all of the different events definitely put a strain on me. I had to learn to better manage my time and be able to get everything done that I needed to complete.

Megan came into the room enthusiastically and very willing to communicate. She is a very happy and confident girl who says that she loves school. We had a casual conversation where I explained that I would be doing everything that I could to help her in school. I explained that I needed to find out exactly where she was having difficulties in order to help and to do this we would have to do some tests. Megan agreed to this without hesitation.
Throughout my semester in Washington D.C., I have had to bring in more of my psychology education from my major to my internship. With being at the American Psychological Association this semester, I gained a better knowledge on what goes into the research they do & how to apply different concepts & aspects of the field to the topics that they study. For the entirety of my internship, my research skills have improved from what they were prior to starting the program. Another skill that I wanted to work on during my internship was my communication skills, whether they be via phone call, talking person to person, or via email. I do believe that by communicating with a variety of people within the APA office or contacting people via call or email that I have sharpened my skills in effectively getting my message across to those I am communicating with.
Additionally, on Wednesday, I am a mentor for my third grade buddy! Two weeks ago, we began the year with the annual Ice Cream Social at the students’ schools. This social is exciting because the students and mentors are able to meet for the first time or are able to reunite if the students are returners. The mentors have the chance to meet the guardians or family members of the students as well! As a general manager, I had the chance to meet all 15 of the students who will be in my buddy family on Mondays. Also, I took the time to introduce myself to all of the students’ guardians and learn something about each student! As a mentor, I was so excited to be reunited with my little buddy and talk with his parents again! It was unbelievable to see how much he had changed and we were so excited to see each other! We were pen pals over the summer, but we stopped writing a few months ago. My little buddy and I talked about the following: activities that we were excited for, his favorite activities from the previous year, how his summer went, his interests, and his least favorite activities from the previous
The stimulations were really eye opening. I was able to see through the eyes of a child with a learning disability in different areas. I always understood that children who have learning disabilities learned differently, but I didn’t imagine how extreme the difference could be. The problems were hard for me and became frustrating. I now know firsthand how frustrating it can be for students who have learning disabilities in different areas. It’s amazing what extra time or shorter questions can do to help increase understanding. I realize that some things that come naturally to me may be extremely difficult for someone who learns differently. As a new teacher, I will make sure to teach children strategies and develop assignments that increase student understanding.
While I was nervous at first, the students warmed up to me and I felt comfortable. Going to a classroom every day is something I look forward to, and this experience put that into perspective a little more. I know teaching is just as challenging as rewarding, and I’m ready to take that on. I learned several classroom tips from my cooperating teacher. He was knowledgeable about the subjects, and I was able to take away ideas. These ideas, and tips will be used in my classroom. As for MoSEP standards, I consider my strengths; Standard #2 Student Learning, Growth and Development, Standard #5 Positive Classroom Environment, Standard #6 Effective Communication, and Standard #8 Professionalism. I figured these as my strengths, because they are what I focused on while in the classroom. I think these standards are important to students’ learning, and they are something that I didn’t have trouble accomplishing. While I learned a tremendous amount of knowledge through this experience, I still have a lot to learn. I need improvement in lesson planning. Lesson planning is a big portion of teaching, and it’s something that you’ll never stop doing. I also need to learn how to deal with parents. Doing Junior Achievement I didn’t have to interact with parents, so that’s something that I’ll need to come in contact with at some point. I would like to improve in teaching techniques. The teachers were giving the students positive reinforcement throughout the day. In class we talked about how positive reinforcement helps the students to succeed in their classes. Another ah-ha moment was the environment of the classroom. The classroom had no windows at all. In class we talked about what kinds of things are distracting to students with ASD in classrooms and one of those things are the windows in classrooms. The third ah-ha moment was the parent sheets that the teacher and the school provide for the parents. In class we talked about how parent involvement is very important for the students with disabilities. The teacher fills out the parent involvement paper that lets the parents know how the child did in school this week and what their child needs to improve on. The students must give their paper to their parents to look at when they get home. The things that I had learned during my observation experience that I will use in the future for my classroom will be including student learning objectives in the classroom, using positive reinforcement, and get the parents more involved in their child’s education. I will go over with the students what the student learning objectives are in the beginning of class so the students will know what they will be doing and what they will be learning throughout the day.
