Prufrock

I have found what I believe to be the central theme of the poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S Eliot. Although there can be many interpretations of the central theme of the poem such as “Aging and dying; Midlife crises; Old age and regret; Wealth and poverty”, I disagree that one of these themes is the “central theme” of the poem. I would also disagree with the notion that there are many meanings to poem; in the often vague short cut way. Although these potential themes hit at pieces of the central theme, after conducting my own analysis I have come the conclusion that the central theme of the poem is the struggle between the social constructs of society, and the life lived inside one’s own mind/subconscious. Which allows for prufrock , to escape the unjust shallow world in which he is forced to exist and operate. There are many instances in the poem that highlight Prufocks distain for societal norms and requirements. His expressed point of view on life is a narrow but understandable one. Prufrock is a self conscious and anxious person; this affects his view on society. If he were more self confident would he have the same perspective? Would he still urn to dream …show more content…

This constant reference to the inadequacies of society leads the reader to question how one could bare to live in a society such as this. Prufrock eludes to his world being disrupted by the human voices that wake him up “We have lingered in the chambers of the sea By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown Till human voices wake us... and we drown.” This outlines out the struggle that Prufrock has between the real world and the imaginative world of the sub conscious. While he enjoys this world, it is constantly disrupted by the wows of the real
