If you’ve ever watched a movie or a television show it is quite evident that all the gore and injuries are fake. The way that directors make them appear real is with special effects makeup. Prosthetic makeup (also called special effects makeup and FX prosthesis) is the process of using prosthetic sculpting, molding and casting techniques to create advanced cosmetic effects. FX prosthetic is used for many things including media, to help tell a story, and is an art among itself. Many men and women wear makeup on a daily basis, but if you’ve ever watched a production of any kind, you can see that the makeup that the actors and actresses is not every day wear makeup. Prosthetic makeup, also known as “movie makeup” or “special effects makeup” is used in many types of media, including movies, plays, television shows, and musicals. This type of makeup was revolutionized by John Chambers in such films as Planet of the Apes and Dick Smith in Little Big Man. A great musical performance that exemplifies prosthetic makeup is Cats. It is used in many forms of media, but is an art amongst itself. A basic understanding of materials and concepts is all that’s needed to get started in making your own imagined creatures come to life. Prosthetic makeup does not take a particular skill level as long as you have the patience and money to get supplies. Special effects makeup is an escape for people who experience hardships, this makeup type is a way to really show how you are and what you can do if you put your mind to it. Prosthetic makeup makes a great hobby and is a fantastic way to express yourself and how you view different things.
