The Sports Education model curriculum is designed for grades that range from upper elementary to high school students. This curriculum focuses on team sports for the length of full seasons rather than different activity units every week. Although the teacher will explain the sport being played, overall, it is a student-lead and student-centered curriculum that works on objectives such as developing student’s cognitive, locomotor, affective , and teamwork skills. The model was originally created by Daryl Siedentop in 1986 and since its creation, it’s been implemented as a way of teaching across the nation.

Some pros of this model to start with is that with this model being able to be used at the upper elementary level, if students haven’t already participated in sports, this is a way to introduce to them a positive traditional sport experience. Through working as a team throughout practice routines, game play, and playoff experience, it helps the students learn values of playing a team sport such as responsibility, leadership, team work, and hard work. Another pro of the sport education model is that because it’s so team oriented, student-centered, and every student has a certain job to contribute to the success of their team, it provides a lot of socializing between classmates and overall fun for everyone. As many pros that come with this curriculum, some cons consist of that the teacher must rely on students to hold up their end of their roles by showcasing responsibility and maturity throughout the season. Some students lack in this area and sometimes this issue can become problematic. Another potential con of this model is during gameplay, some teammates may feel biased toward a certain teammate that shows more skill in the sport than others on the court. Not every student will be great at each sport and some students make excel in certain sports than others so it’s the teachers job to evenly split up the teams by skill level and make sure every player is getting even opportunity and playing
Stephen D. Keener, writer for the New York Times, says in his article Sports Teach Kids Valuable Lessons, “The lessons young players gain between the foul lines have guided some to become astronauts, emergency first responders, bestselling authors, military heroes, professional athletes and even president of the United States” (Keener). Keener talks about how playing on a sports team as a child can teach the kid very important characteristics, like: teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Any kid who wants to get a job when they’re older is going to have to know how to work well with people, which is where learning the skill of teamwork is so huge. Considering Ripley’s point about sports lowering academics, Keener argues, “These lessons directly translate into the classroom and beyond” (Keener). Should college athletes be required to graduate with a degree, before they go to the pro’s? I believe that all colleges should make it mandatory for their student athletes to graduate before they are allowed to go to the pro’s. Only a small percentage of student athletes go on to have a career in professional sports after college. The few that are lucky enough to make it to the pro’s usually end up playing for a couple of years and then end up not being able to find work. College athletes should be required to obtain degree’s because not only does it allow you to have something to fall back on if you can’t make it to the pro’s, but it also can show pro sports teams that you are a mature individual, and your education is important to you as well.

Some people don’t know why schools are trying to drop interscholastic sports. Some schools are trying to get rid of the sports that are going on for the district because of the cost to cover the injuries for the players or the cost of the equipment. Although people say that the equipment for school events like football pads, football cleats and basketball things. If the price goes down on the equipment schools would probably buy a lot of the equipment so they don’t have to buy it so they have extra material for events if something breaks or gets ruined. Among the cost of the equipment school districts would possibly use the same equipment.
Some schools that still have middle school sports have realized that when a kid plays a sport, they learn new skills that they can apply to real life. Teaching Games For Understanding Model is the topic that I researched. This teaching model was created by Rod Thorpe and David Bunker from Loughborough University. The abbreviation for Teaching Games For Understanding Model is TGFU. This model was made for students to help educate them about the games they play in Physical Education. This learning model does not reflect on the performance from the student. It focuses on teaching student’s skills and key concepts in the classroom. There are six stages in TGFU that specifically target an important skill or concept that the student needs. The following six stages are Game Form, Game Appreciation, Tactical Awareness, Decision Making, Skill Execution, and Performance. All of these stages combine to make one goal of educating students with the skills and concepts they need in Physical Education, sports, and life.
Pros and Cons of Children in Sports On Friday, October 18, 2013, Aledo High School and Western Hills High School squared off in a football game. It was a great game for those rooting for Aledo High because they won the game 91 – 0. At the time these two teams played, ESPN of Dallas/Fort Worth had Aledo ranked number one in the state in class 4A high school football. With a massacre like that, one may ask if the Western Hills Football team knew why they had lost so badly. Would this game have made state and national news if it had been played but no score was kept?

Organized sports teach athletes some of the most powerful moral values and life lessons that any individual can attain. Despite the opposing opinion that students who take part in organized sports suffer academically due to time deprivation and focus misdirected away from the classroom, involvement in sports teaches young men and women to maintain imperative values, such as hard work, selflessness, and commitment, which ultimately improves student-athletes’ academic performance.
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
As a teacher my primary goal is to maximize student success. For me to accomplish that I need to create an atmosphere where students are enthusiastic and intrinsically motivated. Sport Education is physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs. It usually makes the kids want to be competitive with one another and it teaches them the importance of a winner and loser. This type of teaching method helps students learn how to play sports and gets them involved. The earlier you start using this method, the earlier the children learn the basic functions and skills behind activities. When children start to understand the sport or activity that is being taught, they will want to start doing more activities in and outside of the classroom. Sports are a very important in a persons life because it keeps you involved, physically fit, healthy, and it shows the importance of competition and teamwork.

Some of my best childhood memories involve playing in a basketball game as a kid with my parents watching. The lessons and experiences I gained from playing sports are invaluable. I think it should be required to play a team sport while you are child in elementary school. The skills you will receive from playing a sport is unparalleled at that age. Team sports teaches kids people skills, and how to make friends. It also provides exercise that the kids need at a young age. Finally it shows that hard work will get rewarded.
