I believe that in middle school, it is a necessity for kids to be involved in extracurricular sports to learn knew skills that they can apply on and off the field. Due to budget cuts, more and more schools have had to cut extracurricular sports. I know that I want sports to come back and so do many kids in middle school. Sports will benefit your health and many other aspects that help you become successful. Some schools that still have middle school sports have realized that when a kid plays a sport, they learn new skills that they can apply to real life. Have Sports Teams?") When kids are on a team, they have to learn skills that will help them work with other people. This helps them when they have to work with people, they will have the social skills to work productively. Also, another article says, “Students may form connections through sports teams that wouldn't otherwise occur.” ("Pros and Cons of Middle School Sports.") Kids could make friends through sports. They may not be able to make many connections with them but the one thing that can bring them together are sports. It is important for kids to have friends in middle school or they could become severely depressed. Lastly, the article states “Sports teams also provide experiences for developing leadership skills, as members of the group are called upon to rise to leadership positions.” ("Should Middle Schools Have Sports Teams?") Many kids need to learn leadership skills to take charge of something. When they are working on a group project and their partners aren’t working, they need to be able to lead them. Middle school sports help kids become much healthier and lose lot’s of weight.
For example, an article states, “A 2006 study on female athletes found that when female students are given more opportunity to participate in athletics in high school, their weight and body mass improve.” ("Home." Many kids are becoming overweight. “The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the percentage of children aged 12 to 19 considered obese increased from 5 percent in 1980 to 21 percent in 2012.” ("Pros and Cons of Middle School Sports.") There needs to be Middle school sports or even more kids will become obese. When a kid starts playing a sport, he could really get hooked on it and play every week. Before you know it, your kid could be losing more and more weight until they are not overweight anymore. Also, another article states, “Middle school sports such as track and field or cross-country, which can have large squads, provide an excellent opportunity for students to get in shape.” ("Pros and Cons of Middle School Sports.") Students that join a sport and like it won’t be overweight. They will be too focused on their sport that they will be aware of what and how much they eat because they want to do well in their
sport. School sports help make sure that kids will not make poor decisions in life. For example, one website states “A 2002 study by the Department of Education that found students who spent no time in extracurricular activities in high school were 49 percent more likely to use drugs and 37 percent more apt to become teen parents.” (Home." PublicSchoolReview.com) When kids are in school sports, they are too busy to make bad decisions. They would also be worried if they did something like this, their coach would find out and they would get kicked off the team. Also, the same website says, “A 2001 survey found that students agreed they would not spend as much time in sedentary activities like watching television and playing video games if they had other options after school.” (Home." PublicSchoolReview.com) This piece states that when kids are involved in sports, they would not have the time to watch tv and play video games all day. If they liked the sport, then they would play it more then they watch tv. Lastly, the website states “ A survey conducted by the Minnesota State High School League in 2007 and reported by the NFHS found that the average GPA of a high school athlete was 2.84, while a student who was not involved in athletics had an average GPA of 2.68.” (Home." PublicSchoolReview.com) when students play sports in middle and high school, the coaches are constantly pushing their kids to get good grades. If they do not get good grades, then they will get kicked off the team. Kids would not want to have bad grades to risk not playing for the team. In conclusion, I believe that middle schools should have extracurricular sports. Without them, kids could fall behind in fitness, education, and the social skills that they desperately need to be successful in their future.
Stephen D. Keener, writer for the New York Times, says in his article Sports Teach Kids Valuable Lessons, “The lessons young players gain between the foul lines have guided some to become astronauts, emergency first responders, bestselling authors, military heroes, professional athletes and even president of the United States” (Keener). Keener talks about how playing on a sports team as a child can teach the kid very important characteristics, like: teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Any kid who wants to get a job when they’re older is going to have to know how to work well with people, which is where learning the skill of teamwork is so huge. Considering Ripley’s point about sports lowering academics, Keener argues, “These lessons directly translate into the classroom and beyond” (Keener). Some people don’t know why schools are trying to drop interscholastic sports. Although people say that the equipment for school events like football pads, football cleats and basketball things. If the price goes down on the equipment schools would probably buy a lot of the equipment so they don’t have to buy it so they have extra material for events if something breaks or gets ruined. Among the cost of the equipment school districts would possibly use the same equipment.
Students who participate in sports remain physically active. Student athletes have practice and must keep “in shape” to compete against other high school teams. Researchers have said the younger population has grown obese. Students who remain in high school sports have a lower risk of becoming obese. Obesity is growing rapidly in the nation and having kids participate in sports will help the nation’s obesity rate decrease. The reason students stay healthy is because the practice may involve running, weight training, and flexibility to help stay in “shape”. Students involved in sports are also encouraged to eat better to ensure the best body to perform at top level. Athletes have a desire to win and be the best. Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. According to statistics gathered by youth sports organizations, “Up to 50 million kids play youth sports in America, and 73 percent of those who begin playing a sport quit before they turn 13” (Binns). The children could have quit because they did not like the disappointment of losing, or because they are exhausted from their parents pushing them too hard. But parents have their reasons for pushing their children into sports. “Studies show that kids who play sports are less likely to become obese, abuse drugs or alcohol or to perform poorly in school” (McCormick). If children are not active, then they will most likely become overweight, and if they have nothing to do in their pastime, they may turn to drugs and alcohol, which usually leads to a decrease in grades in school.
So, considering that high school sports do give kids an opportunity to expand socially, keep them in shape, and healthy, an opportunity to make many friends, and a shot at getting a scholarship, and making it to the professional level in their sport. But long term, the negative effects are more in the sense it could damage a student permanently, from an academic level to a physiological level. Also, most of the positive things people would argue aren’t guaranteed to happen or isolate them from the negative effects. But when it comes to the negative side, a student would need to go through some of the stages, maybe not all, but for sure some. To sum it all up, high school sports are more negative on a student than positive, even though people tend to see only the positive things that can come from them.
Sports have been the center of attention in schools for a long time, and their popularity keeps growing. Although people use after school athletics as a way to get exercise; they are actually bringing down test scores. Therefore, schools should not keep after school sports because they cost enormous amounts of money, students will get better grades, and kids and will not be distracted from school.
In conclusion competitive are good for kids because builds character, physical and mental health are improved, and life lessons are learned. Sports are good thing in middle schools because they give confidence in kids that have never felt very confident and know they have their team on there back helping

Competing in sports as a kid can help you learn effective workouts and exercises that you can do on a daily basis. “Much attention has been given to the role of sports and exercise in decreasing the rates of obesity in our nation’s youth” (Geier). In addition to this belief, Americans are benefiting from taking part in youth sports. Lower rates of diabetes and cardiovascular disease are not as likely to occur in athletes opposed to non-athletes.
Organized sports help keep teens out of trouble, give them an opportunity to meet positive influences, provide an opportunity to develop a higher self-esteem, and enables students to set goals. Staying with sports through school helps teens stay on the right track. Students should be interested in their sport and enjoy participating and always should try to have fun!

Imagine how much bigger that number would be if competitive sports were not a thing. Now people may argue that that is just a coincidence and that it is about what you eat and not your physical activity. But diabetes and obesity is also more likely to be in children who don't do sports.
