American’s love their sports and they get pretty offensive when it comes to their sports. On one hand you have a group of people that love sports and believe that they are fundamental especially in schools. On the other hand there is a group of people that don’t feel the same way as those other people do. Some people believe that there shouldn’t be sports in schools. Now these people have great facts about what is happening and why there shouldn’t be sports in school. There reasons being education is being put to the side, too much money is spent on sports, and finally that there could be lifelong problems from sport injuries in school.
Many people believe that sports aren’t the most important and that because of sports that education is being snuffed off and being put to the side. Amanda Ripley argues in The Atlantic in her article “The Case Against High School Sports”, that the United States place too much attention on sports rather than academics. Ripley argues that sports programs at schools should be reduced, maybe even cut out completely. She states that there are a lot of countries that outperform America on international tests, and it is because they put more of their emphasis on academics, where the United States puts more of an emphasis on athletics. Ripley says that high school sports negatively affects academics. (1). I disagree with Ripley on this topic; I think that sports are important for young kids because it teaches them very valuable life lessons and it keeps them out of trouble.

After reading " The Case Against High School Sports" by Amanda Ripley started to make me think. There were many strong points about how the priorities of the sports are beginning to be more important to students than their education. Another great point was that the financing and budgeting is unfairly distributed throughout school districts and is spent more on athletics and clubs and not enough on classes. And I Believe that schools should put certain restrictions on the spending and promoting or in school sports and clubs because of the major drop in national and world comparisons.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" (Nelson Mandella). School is what is developing our future generation, so why should it be put aside by sports? Most kids who are white won't make it to any major sport anyways. School should be number one priority, nothing not even sports should get in the way of that. If an athlete can't find a way to do both then they shouldn't play. And besides some athletes don't even want to do their sport they are it being pushed by their parents. This is why it can't be replaced by things like basketball, football, and soccer.

Ripley explains that since sports gets more attention, nobody pays attention to the academic side and their needs. According to the author, some schools are willing to do whatever it takes to make sure a sport runs, even if there is no money in the budget. She states that too much of a focus is being put on sports is affecting academic achievement negatively in American high schools. The author gives the reader three reasons why schools should focus more on academic achievement and less on sports.
Within a community is a sense of unity, which for many is brought together by the young athletes of the community. Because sports programs can often turn over big profits for schools, they tend to dedicate most of their excess funds towards sports, and rely on sports programs to create large profits for the school. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. At some point students has had trouble either at home or at school and need to release stress or tension. Some of these times the teens choose to do activities that are wrong. Youth want to feel comfort and accepted, therefore they sometimes will do events that are not well for their body just to fit in with a group. There is evidence that proves sports can reduce the likeliness of teens committing crimes, or getting into trouble. Tees look at the negative substances such as drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, and think that they can do whatever they want. Many teens look at these activities and think they are “exciting” or “cool” and want to try them, but if they are busy with sports they most likely will not be as easily influenced. Participation in sports helps keep teens out of trouble by taking up their free time which could be used for mischief, gives them an opportunity to meet new friends for positive role models, provides teens an outlet to develop a higher self-esteem, and also enables student to set goals for on and off the field.
As a kid my dad always took me to a field to play soccer. He once told me that you could never be too good. He reasoned that even when you felt you have mastered a certain exercise there would always be more room to improve. From shooting to passing, there was only one right way to get better.
