Professionalism

In our first tutorial group we discussed in general terms most important factors of being a professional. We had a group of four members and we listed the most important factors of being a professional and shared them with the group to assess whether they were valid and important to being a professional. I came up with the following examples

(a) The BCS definition of a professional and two other definitions. Compare the definitions, what do they have in common?
The British Computer Society (BCS) is a leading professional body for computing, IT and communication sectors. It was founded in 1957 in the U.K. It has 70,000 members worldwide in more than 100 countries. BCS is an international awarding …show more content…

From all three definitions we can justify that all the members must undergo code of conduct and ethical practice.

(b) The role of the BCS.
BCS is the professional body that provide range of consultancy services to its members which helps them to adopt best possible practice for employment. They are to promote the study and practice of Computing and to advance knowledge of education for the benefits of professional practitioners and public.

Following are the professional bodies other than BCS that exit for the IT industry such as:
Institute of electrical and electronics engineers or IEEE: is world’s largest professional technical association based in the USA with more than 100,000 members worldwide. They aim is to publish large amount of online academic journals, conference papers, general magazines and other educational services.
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM): is non-profit association based in USA founded in 1947 and has similar aims as Institute of electrical and electronics engineers or IEEE.
There are also so many other non-profit professional bodies that exits in the U.K for IT industry and have similar roles and responsibilities as BCS. Some of these are the UK IT Association (UKITA), Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS), Association of Certified IT Professionals (ACITP), Association of Computer Professionals (ACP), Institution of Analysts and Programmers (IAP) and ISACA.
