Recommended: Advantages and disadvantages of online learning

I'm an online college instructor, navy veteran, blogger and human services professional. My professional experience spans telecommunications, government industries, and human services. I worked in fields that involved training and development, rehabilitation services and technical assistance.
I have a bachelor's degree in management studies from the University of Maryland (UMUC). I have a master's degree in human services from Capella University.

I worked for 11 years at Verizon before changing fields to education and human services. I wanted to pursue work where I could help others reach their potential.

One of the biggest draws for online teaching is doing work you love and earning an income from home. Courses offered at online universities have increased over the past several years. Online professors can teach anywhere between one to three classes a semester. Per my experience, the median compensation for an adjunct faculty member is $2,500 for a three-credit course. Some school's compensation is much less.     My first experience of a comprehensive online learning course was while undertaking a repeat taxation course with a private college for one of the larger accountancy bodies a number of years ago. The approach was new and it was a change from the prior semester lectures undertaken through the onsite part time evening and weekend course from February to June. There was a long revision weekend (Friday to Sunday) and mock exam in May, followed by final exam in June. The repeat course (September to December) was delivered through online lectures and distance learning for a reduced fee (in parallel to the standard course but starting two weeks later) finishing with the same revision process. One would assume the idea was that as students were somewhat familiar with the topic first time around, they could cherry pick online lectures to log on to, as well as reduce attendance numbers onsite and course costs.

    I agree that online classes are more effective than face to face classes for me because of my work schedule and other daily activities. However, I understand that some people can’t do online classes so I think it depends on the person. Online classes give students flexibility for realistic situations. There are many students who have other titles for example mothers don’t really have time to do everything so there needs to be time to do work on their schedule. Other students just have a lot on their plates to do face to face classes. Many believe face to face classes are a waste of time when you have to do most of their school work online. I would say the new generation teaching have a lot of school work online so why not just to all online classes. Online classes aren’t for everybody because you have to be disciplined on your studies and school work ethics. Face to face classes seems to be more comfortable to students because the convenience of getting answers answered and note being given by the professor directly.
