For a while now, a certain method of teaching has become popular in many colleges across the nation: online education. Online education is learning with the assistance of the Internet and a personal computer in place of attending a classroom with other students. Many online classes offer students the opportunity to learn while not having to leave the comfort of their home. Colleges in America are offering more and more courses online as an alternative to the traditional way of learning in a classroom. However, many disagree with the notion of providing online classes to students. Some argue that students enrolled in online classes will not learn the material as efficiently as students who attend classes traditionally. Critics believe that students must …show more content…
Technology requirements might be the highest on the list for several reasons. While college being expensive is a well-known fact of life, online education requires the student to own a computer at minimum. Along with the computer comes the cost of paying internet fees and acquiring a sturdy virus protection program (Rauch, Joseph). Several different software might be required for a certain class, which may prove costly especially to the type that must be renewed often for an additional price. Interacting with an online instructor may prove to be more challenging since they usually have a limited role in teaching. Students that need one-on-one interaction may find online classes to be too difficult. Online courses may also be difficult for procrastinators, since the deadlines for assignments seems so far away with the many freedoms online education provides. This may lead to procrastinators quickly typing a paper at the dead of night with the time limit ominously approaching in a similar vein to that of the Grim Reaper. Some self-discipline is required for success to those that choose to take online
However, when a student takes an online class the student and professor are at a disadvantage of building an interpersonal relationship. For example, a professor is unable to read the nonverbal cues of a struggling student through a computer screen or is unable to tell if a student is experiencing a true emergency. Just as, a student is unable to read their professors nonverbal cues that a particular chapter or assignment is vital to passing the course. I have taken classes on campus and online classes for three semesters now and have learned that regardless of class format a student needs to be dedicated, structured, self-motivated and not afraid to ask questions. A disadvantage of taking an online class is if a web portal is not working properly.
The past two decades have seen an almost exponential rise in the availability and popularity of online college classes and degree programs. Their pervasiveness begs the question as to the difference in a credit or degree earned in an online setting versus that of the traditional classroom. These two educational delivery systems will be compared from the perspectives of flexibility, the student experience, the impact of technology, and the issue of acceptability of online classes and degree programs.
Is technology helping or hurting people learn? Technology is increasing every day, and is soon going to be a big part of everyday life. The change of teaching students on online class is way different to what they are used to, and will take awhile to get used to. There are disadvantages, advantages, opportunities, and challenges in the technology in education. The role that teachers play now will change in the future when the major demand for the use of technology hits. There is a big change in the way that students are learning with this new online learning. Technology is changing the learning of students in a big way. Some ways are positive, and some are negative but either way there is a big impact on the way students learn. Sometimes it just depends on the student’s way of learning. Those kind of students should have the choice of what they would rather use a book, or a computer. Students need to be able to decide the type of learning that they want to do to help them learn. Students need to know which way it is that they learn the best. Each person has to find out which way they learn the best to better themselves. Find out the best way that they learn so that it can benefit them in life.
Most of the time, a student cannot learn at their own pace of the subject because the teacher has a schedule and other students so that student can easily fall behind or not feel as if they are learning. Also, if a student misses a class due to an illness or some other sort of reason they will get behind in classes, while with online class the student can still work while sick or the class will not move on without them. Some schools do not offer some classes that students wish to take. For example, some schools may not present a language class that the pupil wishes to take but online they have a better chance of being able to take that
When students are deciding on where to go to college, they have the option of choosing between online classes and the traditional classroom classes. Today, some students are finding it much easier to maintain a job, family and start a college career, all by taking online classes. Although some students still prefer to stick with the traditional classroom classes, they still have the option to take online classes. Both online and the traditional classes will provide the educational requirements needed to obtain a college degree and opportunities in the work field. Although the online classes offer just as much as the traditional classes, they are completely different when it comes to teaching methods, course material and time.
Online education is a booming trend in the education world. It is something different than the traditional classroom. It is allowing student around the world the opportunity to get an education. Online education allows student to have a more proficient and cheaper way of learning. Having multiple ways to give a student an education allows all learning types to find their own way of learning. Education changes lives but it can be difficult for students to get to a classroom to sit through an hour class 4 times a week, this can be for many different reasons. There are many doubts about online education, but this a new world without borders it is a new opportunity for people from all over the world to get an education.

E- Learning is the process of use of technologies which help students to learn at any place and time using their computers and other such devices. It includes educational technology for learning as well as for teaching. It is a technology to extend learning using technological means like internet, intranet and extranet so that it can reach the masses. It includes many terms inside it like web based training; computer based training, virtual and digital classrooms. It delivers its content with the help of CD, DVD, audio and video, interactive TV and many more such paths of providing information. It helps people who are far situated and want to gain knowledge through distance learning. It also provides flexibility in the education system as it is available at any place and time.
Learning online can be difficult because attendance is not required which can make the course very difficult. Students have less motivation to do assignments and keep up with studying because there is no one reminding them due dates and assignments, making it very easy to get behind. To do a course online the student needs to have organizational skills and time management skills in order to keep up with work. These skills are needed to be able to finish assignments on time and have an effective study plan. Not everyone has these skills which makes it very difficult for some people because they think they can just do the work another time although they will end up behind in the
In a K-12 setting, distance learning or traditional learning requires careful planning that must take place in order for the educational process to work for the students. When we look at both forms of education there are still pros and cons to both. Although online learning has made a major impact in the world of education, many people have not accepted this form of education. One of the reason for their concerns is that students cannot get fast answers to their questions about the assignment from the teacher. Another concern is that the students cannot perform effectively in a group collaboration that is taking place online. Also, students may not effectively do their homework from an online program. Lastly, some families do not have the technology at home for online learning.
Online learning is a fairly new and growing mean of pursuing a higher education and excelling yourself beyond your peers. Online college is a flexible, efficient, effective and convenient way for working adults to pursue their scholastic goals. Although it is seen as less than effective and even less quality as being in a class room, the online classroom is best for working and busy adults to continue their education at their own pace and on their own time. The environment is different but the classes are the same and provide the same quality education as campus based learning.
The Internet was first seen in education in 1984, it first was used for college and career guidance. Between the years 1997 and 2007 the internet expanded far more rapidly than anyone had anticipated. In this time frame the internet developed into the world’s main resource for information. Search engines such as Google, yahoo, aol established numerous new methods to find information. Educational software became more beneficial and motivating to students with the use of new graphics and videos actuality included in the learning experience. Some would say that the internet has altered education for the better, others would say otherwise according to Laurentius de Voltolina there hasn’t been much change to the appearance that you may see in a
Over the years it has been seen that education has taken up several forms. With the advent of technology, education has also been integrated with technology. Previously it was seen that education was achieved through written forms of paper with pen or pencil. The use of pen and pencil can be dated back to the Roman Empire. However, with the developing pace the traditional means of attaining education are changing. The introduction of information technology has brought forth a new way of learning through the internet. E-learning is the new form of education introduced by IT which helps people to attain knowledge through the use of their computers. A portal is introduced by the use of information technology which the students are able to access and to take tests. However, this new technology also brings with it other ethical issues of plagiarism and social contact. Online education is an inadequate alternative for traditional, classroom-based teaching for several reasons: there is no interactive communication between the student and the instructor, potential employers do not value online course work, class offerings are limited, instructor feedback to the student might be delayed for days, and group projects are nonexistent.
Some students within society need to have online learning to complete college degrees due to their lifestyles. While it is good to have online learning as an option if one chooses, it should not be the only option available to some students. Some may argue that online education is not creating discrimination within the educational environment. Furthermore, some may suggest that online learning is benefiting our students in society. There has been a breakthrough in time and geographical limitations of education via online courses (Ho, 2009).
Online learning, also known as distance learning or online learning, has become a new and successful means of receiving an education in a highly technologically enhanced environment (Regan, Evmenova, Baker, Jerome, Spencer, Lawson, & Werner, 2012). Kaymak and Horzum (2013) defined online learning as using Internet technology to gain knowledge and skills through the use of synchronous and asynchronous learning tools. Allen and Seaman (2013) stated that about 6.7 million students attending colleges and universities across the United States were successfully enrolled in at least one online course in 2011. There is an increased interest in online learning that continues to grow as a result of the amplified demands from the work place and the escalating availability of nontraditional educational options and providers (Allen & Seaman, 2008).
