Instructions
a. Make notes either during or immediately following your observation of another teacher, remembering that the focus for this module and peer observation is on how Maths, English and ICT are embedded in the subject specialism, and the strategies used for teaching the subject specialism NB: you are not assessing the teacher or asked to make a judgement on the teacher you are observing; the observation is for your own development.
b. Collect a copy of the lesson plan from the observation as you will need to attach it to this completed form before you submit it to your tutor.
c. After the observation, read through your notes and reflect on what you have observed and how you approach embedding Maths, English and ICT in your own teaching.
d. Finally, complete the form reflecting on development points from the session

The key concept of the lesson I observed, was for the students to gain confidence in solving word problems, embedded in life skills and reading comprehension. b) In a mentor role, what specific advice would you give your observe in order to help them to develop and extend their practice?
As a mentor, my advice to my colleague, would be to use a graphic organiser, set out in a table format relevant to the topic. This would further embed English and support her learner’s attainment. For example, “maths word problem” to create a graphic organiser to include the main idea, supporting details, keywords and a section to show your working – out. This method would give the learners the opportunity to check their answers satisfies the criteria, organise and guide their thinking, make connection, identify areas of focus in a broad topic, and practise their literacy skills. Furthermore, this practise would also afford the teacher a platform to measure the student’s attainment in both literacy and numeracy.
This task should be fun and interesting for the students. It is my hope that this activity proves to be successful for my students and helps them to understand the necessary learning objectives set forth.
Their faith in me allows me to push forward, and drive me to stay on track , so I can reach my goals. In addition, without my passion to want to help others none of my goals I want to achieve would be possible.

On Thursday October 8, 2015 I engaged in a one day observation at a Junior High School, while during the week beginning October 26, I engaged in a peer teaching/observation at a Secondary institution. During the one day experience, I functioned as an observer. On the other hand, my role was that of a teacher during the one week practicum experience. The rationale of this essay is to compare both experiences using the following variables: classroom management, lesson clarity and learning climate. The class for the one day practicum experience consisted of both gender. The class size was 29, with seventeen girls and 11 boys. The formative assessments that will be used throughout this lesson are direct observations, student participation, and collection of the Fairy Tale Maps. I will use the direct observations to elicit direct feedback, by looking at what the students are completing and then giving them feedback accordingly. I will walk around and see how the students are doing on the task they were asked to complete. Based on what I observe, I will be able to see which students are able to complete the task and which students are still having a difficult time with it. The lessons contained in this unit of instruction were based upon Madeline Hunter’s Seven Steps of Lesson Plan Formatting. This lesson plan format is a proven effective means for delivering instruction. When designing lessons, the teacher needs to consider these seven elements in a certain order since each element is derived from and has a relationship to previous elements. It should be noted that a lesson plan does not equal one class period. Throughout the course of the lesson, it may take multiple sessions before the student is ready to independently practice the skills learned. Anticipated lesson duration is included with each lesson plan provided in this instructional unit. Madeline Hunter’s Seven Steps of Instruction includes stating the objectives, anticipatory set, teacher input, modeling, checking for understanding, guided practice, and independent practice (Hunter, 2004). For the purpose of this instructional unit, input and modeling have been condensed into a streamlined event; as well has, checking for understanding and guided practice. This form of lesson planning is preferred within the Elkin City Schools district and lends itself to the creation of engaging lessons.
To the teachers, this study can be used to help them identify the errors of the students where they failed or succeeded in solving a word problem and upgrade their professional competencies to attain quality education, especially in mathematics.
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
Through the implementation of my lesson, I learned I have to work on the assessment and the details of lesson planning. During the planning of this lesson, the assessment was an aspect that needed more thought. The students had a problem with reading the words for the word sort and understanding the writing section. If I were to reteach the lesson I would add pictures to the words on the word sort to help the students to read and understand the words. In addition, I would include a sentence strip for the assessment that the students could copy but then finish the sentence on their own. The writing prompt was too hard for the students, I received various answers some students copied the prompt only while other students understood it and wrote appropriate answers.
Professional development, in its most simple definition, is learning opportunities. Under professional development, individuals are open to a wide array of these opportunities in order to gain knowledge and improve. The learning opportunities that make up professional development take up many forms. Conferences that aim to teach new skills and methods, formal pieces of academic material, training methods provided by an external or internal organizations are all learning opportunities through which professional development is attained. Professional development is a continuous process, that requires adapting to new techniques and approaches to improve a person’s technical capabilities.
The one topic that was most relevant was behavioral issues, because most of the students in this classroom had behavioral problems and it affect the way they learn. It was great to see the teacher be patience, and it was very insightful to watch how she handle each behavioral problem that arose in the classroom. Another topic that arose was the different types of instruction, but as discussed early in the paper the classroom that I observed was a direct instruction.
