There are several milestones that our society uses to measure personal development and suitability for advancement to higher degrees of social responsibility. One such milestone is career selection and attainment. Some individuals may never find a satisfying vocation, whereas others know what they desire from the day they can communicate. A simple way to reduce the unfortunate friction of choosing a career is to be self-aware. Understanding what makes one happy, fulfilled, and the things that are important to them, is the easiest way to narrow down the world’s endless possible occupations and ensure job satisfaction. There are many ways to gain personal enlightenment, perhaps the simplest and most effective way is to take a course geared towards career development.
Part I. Self Exploration
Although upon beginning this course I had already chosen a career, several things about myself were reemphasized through our self-exploration series. The Personal Globe Inventory enlightened me about a shift and strengthening of certain elements of career personality. Prior to beginning my position as an athletic trainer with The Arizona Rattlers, I worked for five years as a manager of a tanning salon. As the salon was a single-owned salon by a husband and wife who had their own careers, I accepted responsibility for running the entire business. With my previous experience in school and work being in different areas, I found myself forced to take on tasks that I had no experience in. As I took on these tasks such as bookkeeping, scheduling, advertising/marketing, and staffing, I found that it was easy to thrive. ... continue to do so. Money is not the root of happiness; however, I will not ignore the fact that having money is much easier than not having it. Also, as someone who desires children in the future, I am unwilling to feel like I am unable to provide them with the essentials of life. Furthermore, as a woman working in an athlete’s world, I am aware that I may face some difficulties surround the stigma of this situation. I may be perceived as homosexual, accused of sexual harassment, or even sexually harassed. However, I will not allow the possible issues to color my motivation to realize my passion. As I have already developed many wonderful connections in the sports and medical world, I am more than confident that over time my opportunities and knowledge will grow tremendously. I am convinced that I have all of the tools to be successful in my career.
Ehrenreich opens the book by seeking out a “career coach”, in other words, someone who will help her navigate the sea of job opportunities. From Ehrenreich’s description, the biggest thing the coaches bring to the table is enthusiasm and support. Many results have been positive from someone having a coach to guide them. Barbara was off to a good start in her journey.
Their faith in me allows me to push forward, and drive me to stay on track , so I can reach my goals. In addition, without my passion to want to help others none of my goals I want to achieve would be possible.

Perfection in this context is the school’s or person’s habits that integrates students in learning Moreover, excellence will be used to describe activities that have proven through observation to serve as best or better actions. Student’s affairs practitioner need to be abreast intellectually, they are at least required to have a baccalaureate degree. Choosing a vocation can be a daunting task. With the world ever-evolving, one may come across a new attractive career every year. In order to ensure optimal job satisfaction, it is vital to educate oneself about every alluring prospect prior to committing. Simple factors like the time commitment and salary can mean the difference between a content existence and a miserable one.
Ultimately, this class helped me gauge and find a suitable career path, which will forever shape my future. Self-Exploration Over the course of this semester, I have learned a tremendous amount of information about myself from the self-exploration series. The results of my Personal Globe Inventory (PGI) presented me with a couple of different career paths to explore. The first type of career that brought to my attention was an enterprising career.
In Richard N. Bolles’ What Color is Your Parachute, the author seeks to guide and advise the reader in how to choose and gain a career. He goes beyond tips for the traditional job hunt, and attempts to reveal to the reader the importance and possibility of choosing a career that actually goes beyond paying the bills, but contributes to the happiness of the reader. Bolles encourages the reader to go beyond inspiration and pursue some practical self-reflection in order to realize the job that satisfies.
Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.

Nurses need a seat at the table to ensure they have a voice to influence and shape their future. Nursing is constantly evolving and changing, and employers continue to raise the bar for nursing. Nurses understand early in their career the importance of continuing education to enhance future career opportunities. Professional development relates to how nurses continue to broaden their knowledge, skills, and expertise throughout their career, therefore enhancing their professional practice. This advanced knowledge is not only career boosting, but also opens a seat at the table giving nurses the power to make decisions and effect changes. Professional development and continuing education are more important to nurses now than ever before to keep up with the rapid changes in healthcare today. Rising mostly through self-efficacy and outcome expectations, career-related interests foster educational and occupational choice goals (Bandura, 1997). Especially to the extent that they are clear, specific, strongly held, stated publicly, and supported by significant others, choice goals make it more likely that people will take actions to achieve their goals (Lent, Hackett, Brown, 1999). Their subsequent performance attainments provide valuable feedback that can strengthen or
career journey. The career action plan that I have outlined provides a strategy to steer my chosen career in the right direction by offering assistance in managing my career path. It can also assist in developing the necessary skills and knowledge for the job and provide guidance on how to reach them. The outline helps to identify strengths and weaknesses, allowing me to work towards improving areas that need development to enhance my career.
Career counseling over the lifespan has more than an occupational focus, it deals with the person’s entire being with a vision that includes one’s lifespan. Career counseling takes into consideration character development, character skills, life roles, individual life and work history, goals, and obstacles. A career counselor not only assists a client with a career plan, but also with a life plan. This paper focuses on two categories of career counseling. The first focus is the history of career counseling as a field of study with the emphasis on when and why career counseling began (1800s as a study of how the shape of one’s head relates to vocational choice), who and what influenced it (Sizer, Parsons, and Davis), and how it has changed (from an individual/community vocational view to an individual/world lifespan view). The second focus is on the application of career counseling by researching two leaders, John Holland’s and Donald Super’s, contributions to career counseling, their theories and assessments and on the biblical aspects of career counseling and how each theory relates to the Bible.
Career is the total sequence of employment-related positions, roles, activities and experiences encountered by an individual (Jackson T. 2002, p.VIII). Career can also be conceptualised more broadly in terms of “the individual development in learning and work throughout life", and thus includes voluntary work and other life experience (Watt, 1996; in Torrington et al. 2008, p. 446).
The first step of career management process is self-assessment. Self-assessment is refers to the employees using some information that help them to decide which career they really interested to pursue, ability, skills, and behavioural tendencies. According to Allen (2005), self-assessment is a process to identify skills, abilities, knowledge of the employees. During this step, the employees need to do some tests such as the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory and the Self-Directed Search.
