Today’s job seeker has tough competition. In the textbook reading “Judging by the Cover” by Bonny Gainley, she argues that job seekers ought to be careful when they make personal choices that initially will affect their chances of entering the workplace. People have a need to be accepted by others just the way they are, but many of us were taught as adolescence that we should not judge a book by its cover, yet people judge others solely on their personal appearances. That goes for businesses as well, “[t]he bottom line is that businesses exist to make money. Whether it seems fair or not, generally employers do care about the personal appearances of the people they hire because those people represent the business to its customers” (5). Maybe

Our society looks at the news and weather to see not only the news and weather but the persons. Another scenario where employees should not be in dress code all the time is health care professionals. If a doctor or nurse were to wear their scrubs outside of the hospital many circumstances could occur. One problematic situation is the sanitization of the uniform. In addition a health care professional could be expected to carry out duties and be held liable. Although one would not be recognized as a health care professional in uniform by sight, their oath would still be upheld. Some examples are CPR, Heimlich maneuver, or any emergency situation.
In the realm of work the appearance of someone’s body has a significant impact on their success according to Lorber and Yancey. In the text it was emphasized how height is idealized in the work world because it shows authority and being superior to peers and competition. Weight, height, race and jaw shape all are characteristics that have been observed to play a particular role in decision-making for leaders, e.g. the men with looks far from ideal had rarely moved up in military status in comparison to those with more idealized looks (253).

They are always making money just to be on a cover of a book that people always complain about and they would just say that should I try this product do you think it will help my suborn fat and try to lose it by taking this daily with food or water. Researchers say that they can tell if people are attractive or unattractive because they watch guys looking at women and giving facial expressions to tell the other person what they think about the girl or
patients. Girard’s (2011) study further enforces our belief on the importance of a nurse wearing their scrubs by the study’s outcome of “Fifty percent of adult visitors of pediatric patients rated a nurse’s uniform as a very important indicator of nurse professionalism, and only 10% thought it was not important at all.” (p.420) The majority of people placed a higher importance on a nurse’s uniform because it represents the nurse’s professionalism. If a nurse comes into work unprepared and having wrinkles on their uniform then the patient will believe that the nurse can’t take care of them because the nurse can’t take care of themselves.

During this time the person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, and how you dress (Mind Tools, 2996-2011,). Appearances are much more than how something simply looks. An appearance is how something is viewed in various facets, including the physical, intellectual, and emotional traits of the given person. There are also different points of view when discussing appearances. There are the appearances we give ourselves, and the appearances we give to others. Even though these appearances define who we are to the naked eye, they are almost never the complete truth. People characterize us based on what they see, and not necessarily who we actually are. This false sense of truth masks reality, and deceives the beholder.
Formal regulations on appearance have been put in place by many companies for various reasons. One being, some jobs call employees to have direct interaction with customers and you only have one chance to make a good first impression. Certain physical attributes have been heavily associated with different stereotypes which can be hard for some people or customers to look past and not judge off appearance alone. For example, if you walk into a doctor 's office and the receptionist or nurse has five face piercings and tattoo sleeves that might scare the patient off because those things are not physical attributes we typically associate with medical professionals. If done properly regulations can help a company.
