Procrastination And Self Esteem Among University Students

The research study titled: “Procrastination and Self-Esteem among University Students” has identified the relationship between procrastination and self-esteem among university students using correlational research design. Among their research hypothesis, only one: “There is significant association between procrastination and self- esteem in university students” is proven to be true.
According to Saleem and Rafique (2012), students with high self-esteem procrastinate less, while students who procrastinate more has comparatively lower self-esteem. However, both variables are not mutually exclusive. Their results have shown that there is significant negative correlation between procrastination and self-esteem, however, insufficient data is unable to prove whether one variable is the cause or effect of the other variable. According to Saleem and Rafique (2012), the feeling of powerlessness and hopelessness occurs when a person procrastinates, causing their confidence level to suffer and future to seem dark. Thus, one of the factor of low self-esteem is procrastination, and in order to increase students’ self-esteem, timely intervention is needed to alleviate this situation.

The researchers have also found that students with higher academic expectations had better academic performance and experience less stress. Students who experienced more stress tended to have greater health problems and worse adjustment.
