The research study titled: “Procrastination and Self-Esteem among University Students” has identified the relationship between procrastination and self-esteem among university students using correlational research design. Among their research hypothesis, only one: “There is significant association between procrastination and self- esteem in university students” is proven to be true.
According to Saleem and Rafique (2012), students with high self-esteem procrastinate less, while students who procrastinate more has comparatively lower self-esteem. However, both variables are not mutually exclusive. Their results have shown that there is significant negative correlation between procrastination and self-esteem, however, insufficient data is unable to prove whether one variable is the cause or effect of the other variable. According to Saleem and Rafique (2012), the feeling of powerlessness and hopelessness occurs when a person procrastinates, causing their confidence level to suffer and future to seem dark. Thus, one of the factor of low self-esteem is procrastination, and in order to increase students’ self-esteem, timely intervention is needed to alleviate this situation.

The researchers have also found that students with higher academic expectations had better academic performance and experience less stress. Students who experienced more stress tended to have greater health problems and worse adjustment. Hence, it is concluded that self-efficacy showed powerful relationships to academic performance and personal adjustment of the first-year college students, in both direct and indirect
Anxiety. Regret. Frustration. Restlessly glancing at the clock, cringing every time I do. Staring at a blinking cursor, waiting for inspiration. Spending a restless night trying to squeeze out something to turn in the next day. This is a process known all too well by me, and most high schoolers in America, one known as: Procrastination. Procrastination is something easily avoided, and yet, seems to be one of the biggest causes for low grades in most students’ lives. It’s a tempting prospect, putting off your responsibilities to do something enjoyable, but it should be avoided at every possibility. Procrastination causes your grades to suffer, causes your mental health to suffer, and causes you to learn bad habits for the future.
As a chronic procrastinator myself I would have to say from experience that I do more often than not make a decision to procrastinate. When I procrastinate it is most times because I believe that I don’t need the time that I am given to get my work done, or simply that I don’t want to work on the project that day. In a paper written by a Serendip Student entitled “Procrastination: Habit or Disorder,” the author sheds light on the psychological view point of procrastination. The author breaks it up into two categories, behavioral procrastination and decisional procrastination. The author relates behavioral procrastination to self-handicap, meaning that those people use procrastination as an excuse to blame something for the reason that they did not pass that test. In this article, the author uses an experiment conducted by Ferrari and Tic, “participants (men and women) perform an identical task twice. In the first study, participants were notified that they would be evaluated on their performance of the task. Time was allotted for practice or engaging in fun activities. Results found that participants procrastinated for 60% of the time. The second study described the identical task as a fun game. Procrastination comes from the thought of an individual knowing that they can do the same job at a later time. Everyone has been guilty of procrastinating because it is a human fear that no one can escape. To procrastinate is to put off or defer until another time, in other words it may mean to delay (Marano). In Psychology Today, Hara Marano said “twenty percent of all humans identify themselves as chronic procrastinators” (“Marano”). Procrastination is a human behavior that every college student has experienced at some point in his or her educational paths. For some college students, procrastination is a minor issue, for other college students, procrastination is a way of life that results in stress and could possibly be easily be avoided. Why? Procrastination can be broken down into three categories: how someone is considered a procrastinator, characteristics of a procrastinator, and how to escape procrastination.
Procrastination is used mentally to comfort us and give us refuge from our deep inner fears. While it is often perceived as a character defect the fact is that it is really used to defend our self-worth and independence. As the author states “Generally we re taught that procrastination is the problem, rather than a symptom of other problems. This diagnosis, instead of directing your efforts toward ending the cycle of pressure, fear, and procrastination, unfortunately makes matter worse by blaming you for choosing such an awful habit.” The first step to overcoming procrastination is to stop criticizing yourself and to accept that you are in fact imperfect and human. The reasoning behind academic procrastination is fairly complex. In the article “Academic Procrastination: Frequency and Cognitive - Behavioral Correlates” researchers further explore behavioral measures. Unlike any other study at the time, they related the self-report of procrastination to behavioral measures (Soloman & Rothblum, 1984). “Leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today;” Abraham Lincoln, our nation’s 13th President, spoke about procrastinating over a century and a half ago. Did he foreshadow the new procrastination problem infecting our youth today? Maybe, but it’s become an epidemic, spreading across the nation like wildfire. Nevertheless, there’s a difference between those who procrastinate and those who are procrastinators. A non-procrastinator and a procrastinator both have to-do lists with 12 tasks to accomplish; the non-procrastinator finishes tasks one through nine and leaves the rest for another day, but the procrastinator tends to do one or two things before reorganizing the list and procrastinating on the rest (Jaffe). One can argue that procrastinators have symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder causing their lack in concentration, but many teens feel as if they don’t have enough time to finish everything they need to do. Procrastination is not a mental disorder; teenagers simply delay harder projects to do easier assignments, fear being rejected by their peers, and hope for a last minute sense of urgency that will propel them to do better on their endeavors.

Procrastination is a tendency to postpone, put off, delay, reschedule, take a rain check on, put on ice, hold off, or to defer what is necessary to reach a particular goal.(Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus, Third Edition. Philip Lief Group 2009.) While attending College some students find it hard to juggle work, family, and friends. Leading most students down a dangerous path to procrastination; that negative impact affect students from their physical health, mental health, and social health.
American psychotherapist, author and lecture Wayne Dyer once said, “Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of diseases and its toll on success and happiness is heavy.” When one procrastinates, they put things off to be done last minute, which then leads to stress, unhappiness and failure. As a college student Procrastination hinders my academic caree6r. Students procrastinate because they get distracted, overwhelmed by the task or just lazy, however students can overcome procrastination by developing a schedule, carefully planning academic task and improving time management. My personal experinces, O'Reilly, Sally’s article, and Edwin C. Bliss’s book will validate my panaceas to procrastination.
Self-esteem is the amount of worth one has for oneself, so it could possibly affect a student’s academic success if that student lacks confidence in his or her own abilities. How can academic success be measured? An accurate representation of a student’s academic success is the student’s current grade point average (GPA). If a student’s grade point average and self-esteem show a positive correlation, then self-esteem could be a possible indicator of academic success. Recent studies have shown a significant relationship between self-esteem and academic performance and other studies have demonstrated that there is not a significant relationship. Procrastination is a concept that is very relatable and real that if you ask anyone in the world whether they’ve ever procrastinated in their life, undeniably their answer will be yes. It’s been dubbed as normal and has been accepted by several procrastinators as a part of their life. Per the Merriam-Webster dictionary normal is defined as “conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern” (Merriam-Webster 2017). As a high school/early college student there shouldn’t be any room for procrastination because of the many seminars that talk about time management and accepting responsibility and pride for your work. I procrastinate daily. It’s become a natural part of my life that my schedule is now based around doing my work on the last possible day that it’s due. I might procrastinate the entire week but I can never relax because in the back of my mind I know that I have work to complete. Procrastination is a form of relief if several tasks are piling up, but in the long run procrastinating is only putting off the inevitable that will end up as a poor job.
