Video Games and their Problems
Kids used to picture imaginary worlds. Where they can be anything, they want to be. Through the past decades, kids are no longer imagining these worlds. They have drifted towards more of a virtual world, a world where there are limits. Kids are becoming more absorbed in this virtual world, than in the real world. Modern society calls this world video games.
Parents believe they can control how much their kids will play the video games. The parents set rules, regulation on what type of games permitted in the house, and how often the kids can play the video game. The kids become clever, especially during the summer months when mom and dad are gone. The kids quickly turn on their Xbox, PlayStation, computer, or other handheld devices that include the PSP, Nintendo DS, and even smart phones to start on a day’s worth of addiction. The kids simply turn on the device and wait for the game to load. Once the game is loaded, the kids are hooked. The kids see only a game, and there is no harm done in just playing war games. Hours are lost where the kids could be with their brothers, sisters or their friends going out, doing something such as running around playing tag, or riding to the nearby park, or playing on the playground. They will play a game for countless hours, neglecting to do their chores, sometimes forgetting to have lunch, because they are so involved in receiving that high score. The kids will repeat this all throughout the summer months, never doing anything to help around the house.

Do video games induce emotional, physical and psychological scars on children? This question has been pondered by millions of researchers across the globe. On the news there have been frequent accounts of acts of violence caused by children. However it is not the child, parents, or guardians that are blamed. Instead the media has often blamed the video game industry for these acts of immorality. After the Columbine Shootings Bill Clinton (1999) stated that "Over 300 studies report that the boundary between fantasy and reality violence, which is a clear line for most adults, can become very blurred for vulnerable children. Kids steeped in the culture of violence do become desensitized to it and are more capable of committing it themselves" The media has mainly focused their attention on all the research about the negative impact of video games. Many kids like Tommy, who spend most of their childhood and adolescences emerged in imaginary lands rather than dealing with the real world at hand, become socially anxious and have low self-esteem later in life. Socialization is a critical aspect of people learning to fit within a given society. Even more, internalization, involving taking social values, norms and roles into own mind, plays a significant role in shaping behavior, especially in children.
