There are a lot of abandoned historical buildings in cities around the state. These buildings can be used for public uses instead of being demolished and replaced with newer buildings. Instead of allowing historical landmarks to become abandoned blights, or destroy them and lose the history forever, steps can be taken to incorporate them into the modern world through reinvention. This preservation will not only preserve the historical sites but turn them into active, valuable sites for the future.
One option to help with saving historical buildings is to turn them into apartments. Doing this is something that will save the history while resolving housing issues. This is an idea that will keep the history of a city without standing in the way of the growth of a city. Research done by the Preservation Massachusetts, a nonprofit historic preservation group, estimated there are more than 25 million square feet of historic structures that are not being used(Tsipis, Y. 2004). These buildings are structurally strong and could be used to grow a city while keeping the historical value.
The increase of rent is something that usually goes along with the restoration of historical buildings. Massachusetts has put a historical tax credit in play to prevent this from happening. With the use of the tax credit it is possible to make the restoration of historical buildings without raising rent. This will help to prevent excluding low income families from being able to have a place to live. This is important in the preservation process, if you cannot keep the rents down than you are creating a problem for a lot of people. This tax credit was a way to make sure that the history could be saved without pushing low income people out of the...

Salem Possessed: The Social Origins of Witchcraft is a concise, 231 page informational text by Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum. Published in 1974, it explores the economic and social conditions present in the Salem village during the 1600s that led to the hysteria surrounding witchcraft. Multiple graphs and illustrations are present, as well as an average sized font, an abundance of footnotes typically on the left page, and a prominent voice from the authors. The book was written to serve as a more comprehensive informational piece on the Salem witch trials due to the authors finding other pieces written about the same topic to be inaccurate. Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum wanted to create something that utilized
When one evokes The Salem Witch Trials of 1692, the image that comes to most peoples minds are that of witches with pointed hats riding broomsticks. This is not helped by the current town of Salem, Massachusetts, which profits from the hundreds of thousands of tourists a year by mythologizing the trials and those who were participants. While there have been countless books, papers, essays, and dissertations done on this subject, there never seems to be a shortage in curiosity from historians on these events. Thus, we have Bernard Rosenthal's book, Salem Story: Reading the Witch Trials of 1692, another entry in the historiographical landscape of the Salem Witch Trials. This book, however, is different from most that precede it in that it does not focus on one single aspect, character, or event; rather Rosenthal tells the story of Salem in 1692 as a narrative, piecing together information principally from primary documents, while commenting on others ideas and assessments. By doing so, the audience sees that there is much more to the individual stories within the trials, and chips away at the mythology that has pervaded the subject since its happening. Instead of a typical thesis, Rosenthal writes the book as he sees the events fold out through the primary documents, so the book becomes more of an account of what happened according to primary sources in 1692 rather than a retelling under a new light.

America’s history-both good and bad-has much to teach us. Taking down, destroying these monuments is erasing, rewriting the physical symbols of the nation. This type of cultural whitewashing is inglorious. We can treat these monuments as a cautionary tool to remind ourselves what we are and what we are not. The cost forebears paid for the freedom of the nation should be remembered; therefore, people should retain these statues to remind of themselves what these monuments represent.
History has a strange way of coming back around when it comes to human civilization. It has been said repeatedly that those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. However, just because there is a potential for danger in the future, this does not mean that humanity must ignore what once was. History is normally remembered through what is known as a memorial. When a memorial is put into a physical representation, it is then known as a monument. The need to memorialize events or people is complex; in some cases, monuments honor moments of great achievement, while in other cases, monuments pay homage to deep sacrifice. A monument's size, location, and materials are all considerations in planning and creating a memorial to the past. Examples of such feats are the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and even Mount Rushmore. For the latter of the
She also introducing new urban building standards. This this article she talks about, the idea some people have of tearing it down and rebuilding. She also talks about ideas people have about some parts of towns. In Boston, she talks about the area of North End, and the change that it was over gone. During her second visit to this area, she discovered that it had changed. She talked to other about it, although the statistic were higher than the city, the people still saw it as a slum. They felt that they needed to tear it down in order to build something better. This leads to the conclusion that the urban planners to do understand that the people of the city need. They have ideas that were developed years ago that they are still using. These ideas do not take account what the people want. The author also introducing new ideas of a perfect city to live in and what it would look like. The idea of a garden city was introduced. This city would be built around a park. Although the new ideas sounded great they could not be put into place today. The idea of a Garden City is something that sounds nice, but it is not possible in society today. Today a city should reflect economic status, and in order to achieve this the city should be big, and convey an image of power. A city that has aspects of nature in it would not convey that image. That upkeep of a city of that kind would also be difficult. The do understand the author's point of view. The planners often times do not take into account the desires of the people. The town that I grow up in want to become more urbanized. In order to do this, they are building a large shopping center. This shopping center is located in the canyon rim. This canyon rim has been important the people for many years. We come to the area to walk, what bass jumpers, and enjoy the scenic views. This new shopping center took away this area. Many of the people

Often, when people think about a downtown area, they ponder about the breathtaking views, beautiful architecture, and the attractions they can visit. Downtown Detroit has recently taken a different approach on how they can revive the entire city and rebuild its name. To understand why they are going this route, it is important to think about the history of Detroit. Although formerly known as the Capital of Michigan, Detroit still was able to maintain its substantial commercial, agriculture, and later manufacturing land. Being founded in 1701, Detroit has come a long way. For a long time, they have been known for their beautiful architecture of buildings such as: The Detroit Public Library, the Fisher Building, The Whitney, and the Fox Theatre.
For starters, we could take a few of those buildings and turned them into unique restaurants such as the Bread Bar, located on Locke, serving things like organic foods or exceptional meals that can’t be found anywhere else. Adding simple things like unique restaurants would instantly bring in more traffic because of people coming home from work and just stopping in for dinner or even a place for business meetings. Next take one of those buildings and make them into a Starbucks or Tim Hortons. Give people a place to go for a quick lunch or a meeting place. Mak...
During the field trip, I witnessed lots of building in the old downtown district that have been converted into new restaurants or boutiques. Even though lots of constructions have been going on, yet historical buildings still remain its originality. The city of Toronto has tried to develop in a way to coexist with old ones and new ones, which should be always direction of urban planning towards the
.... As every era, every civilization leaves behind monuments and artistic culture in the form of cities and works of art, all this forms the basis for the nation’s memory of its historical heritage.
In this era, historical buildings are very important for us. Historical buildings itself represents culture, historical events, and icon of certain country. The most important fact is, every iconic historical building symbolises the image of a country. If a country were built without any historical building is like a city without a soul. In my opinion, historical buildings are priceless treasures for every country. Hence, conservation on architecture must take place on every important historical building to ensure that these old historical buildings are preserve nicely in good condition. In Malaysia, although we have lots of heritage buildings all over the state but the understanding on practice is vague or unclear. Conservation is a technical
Monuments are an uplifting shift change in today's society, they interpret and reminds us memorable times for Americans in the past and how far United States progressed, However the government doesn’t exceed to their limits as far as they go they don’t need to spend as much money on memorials and monuments. In some cases, the monuments and memories don’t bring emotion to people, it is all safe to say it’s personal.
