In this era, historical buildings are very important for us. Historical buildings itself represents culture, historical events, and icon of certain country. The most important fact is, every iconic historical building symbolises the image of a country. If a country were built without any historical building is like a city without a soul. In my opinion, historical buildings are priceless treasures for every country. Hence, conservation on architecture must take place on every important historical building to ensure that these old historical buildings are preserve nicely in good condition. In Malaysia, although we have lots of heritage buildings all over the state but the understanding on practice is vague or unclear. Conservation is a technical …show more content…
For example, Chinatown at Kuala Lumpur is one of the most visited tourist spot due to its local heritage and unique character. However, the economic growth in Malaysia is getting better year by year and problem of commercialisation is overriding the heritage elements in Chinatown. The number of pre-war shophouses reducing, the sign of deterioration by lack of maintenance, replacement by new tall buildings. There is a need to revisiting users’ devaluation of pre-war shophouses in Chinatown. It is not merely a famous tourist spot but also having its historical and heritage values, especially the facades elements. These facades referred as tangible heritage element which has formed the uniqueness to the city of Kuala Lumpur. Presently, there are practically lack of laborers and technical experts in conservation methods and techniques. This is the major problem because almost all conservation projects involve both repair and maintenance stages requiring an understanding of and analysis of building defect diagnoses. There is also the question of testing and treating building material, choosing appropriate tools and the methods to conserve the building. Regarding this issue, the responsibility to conservation task is major challenge for conservator. Conservator also acts as project manager, he or she shall strive to attain the highest standards in all aspects of conservation including investigation, treatment, research and

Although preservation is not a new concept and been practiced for centuries, designating historic landmarks, structures and buildings as historically significant and preserving them is a new phenomena, which brings us to a fairly straight forward question of what to preserve and what not to. The advent of new materials and advancement of construction technologies changed the style of building significantly from time to time, especially over the course of last two centuries. Although the basic construction materials like brick, wood, lime and stone are in use for centuries, the recent addition of concrete, steel and glass to that list completely overhauled the mode in which the buildings are being built. Taking into account the need, the scale and the pace of construction posed by rapid industrialization, the style of building took an unprecedented form of architecture starting in early twentieth century.
Designs for monuments are very significant, especially monumental museums that are along with other buildings. “Supporters did not want a duplicate of other buildings on The Mall, nor did they want something that would cause further anti-Semitism or to downplay the atrocities of the Holocaust,” (Source E). Monuments should always be a special and representable image. Monuments should stand out because of their beauty and portrayal. Monumental constructors should consider what image they should portray and keep it original to draw attention to their work. They should also consider the design when it is built near or inside of other complexes to keep it from overpowering the original complex or take away the original main purpose of the museum or monument. Design plays a huge roll in the successfulness of a

Items displayed in museums hold historical significance and are representative of society’s culture. Preserving valuable collections for education and enjoyment is a primary role of museums. While fulfilling this role, the architecture of the museum is also an important factor. Historical buildings are converted into museums and architects must consider the use of the space and the museum’s purpose during their initial design. Other museums are built with a clear purpose in mind. As museums are designed, many characteristics are determined. Display and storage spaces as well as visitor services impacts museum’s functionality. Based on the function of a museum, architectural requirements are different.
II. Today, I want to tell you about why it is important to preserve an old building related with the
In conclusion, the controversy of demolishing the original American Folk Art museum’s has been finalized without remorse. According to Diller Scofido+Renfroshas no reasoning could have been found for the integration of the American Folk Art Museum. However, preservation is essential to architecture in the 21st century. It disciplines architecture. Preservation of the American Folk Art Museum will make the site meaningful by keeping the qualities that make it what we call architecture. My opinion is that there are ways to integrate the buildings. Diller Scofido+Renfroshas could have redesigned for a better integration without demolishing the neighboring building ruining a cultural institution. Diller Scofido+Renfroshas is portraying an egotistical and disrespectful opinion towards architecture.
As easy as it is for career historians to espouse the importance of historic preservation, the significance of it could be lost on the rest of society. As stated earlier, books and images alone cannot do justice to the culture and the heritage of the site. By being able to see and touch it, one is able to get a feel for the time. The site itself essentially is a time capsule that jettisons us into the past and allows us to gain some small insight to the lives of those who walked before us. Another reason that historic preservation is important is because sites that we can save provide a positive learning environment that can help people understand and appreciate their past, their cultures, various movements and even some people. Whether the preservation is on a federal or municipal level, the benefits of having a registered historical site in an area can help pump new life into an economy that could otherwise have been dying. Additionally, maintaining buildings and landscapes provide value as art, as Robert Stipe states in his book, A Richer Heritage, “these structures and areas were designed by some of America’s greatest artists. They are as important to our artistic heritage as our decorative arts, our painting and sculpture…If we were to value historic structures as we honor our other works of art, much wanton destruction might be
In China, urbanization is at dramatic pace but in static patterns. This leads to the Chinese cities losing their own styles, and being built in the static architecture modes which are introduced from developed countries. Moreover, the traditional architecture cultures are being eroded by the static modern architecture patterns. Some of them are even on the boundary of extinction. Recently, architects in China have shown an increasing interest in the issue of traditional architecture in the modern era. This paper studies on the causes and effects of the erosion of the modernity to the traditional architecture and the possible solutions. It will be divided into three parts: the first part focuses on the causes and effects; the second part presents the combination of modern architecture and traditional culture; the third part concerns the cultivation enhancement of Chinese architects.
Preservation and heritage, while closely related to one another, has a separate and distinct meaning. Heritage, when used in a historical sense, relates to landmarks or places that have meaning to those who inhabit a country. Preservation, on the other hand, is the process of protecting any physical landmark or object and repairing it to its original state. Since preservation and heritage are similar, historians are essentially working to save a culture's society. This protection enables the landmark to be passed down from a country’s ancestors and preserved for future generations.
The pearl of the Indian Ocean Sri Lanka, reflects a long history of its nations. From the archeological evidence of the prehistoric settlements and prehistoric human Balangoda man (Deraniyagala, 1998) to modern food of kottu like pizza to American; make the broad diversity of culture in Sir Lanka. By analyzing cultural heritage definition in Sinhala language, the definition given in the legislations in 1940, and its relationship with Athens charter and 1954 UNESCO convention, I will demonstrate the cultural heritage vision imbedded in the society through legal definition. Also, I will offer criticisms and recommendations for an improved approach to the definition of cultural heritage in Sri Lanka in broader context.
Buildings reflect the values and ideas of society within periods. The role of architecture in shaping society and vice versa largely depends on the period in question and who or what affects first. The Enlightenment, and the subsequent period the Post-Enlightenment, reflect the biggest change for current ideas regarding architecture and society and current theories. At the same time, individual identities and understanding of society, progress and truth all follow a similar evolving path. It is during this dramatic shift in thinking that the role of architecture to society and the idea of progress and truth becomes a more complex relationship. How this relationship works and its implications is based on the theory that there is a direct link between the two. One cannot develop without the other. Who leads whom and to what extent they influence each other is evident in architectural trends and pioneering works by architects such as Robert Venturi, Frank Gehry amongst others.
As Nuttgens eloquently expressed, architecture is a “vital…expression of the experience of mankind.” It is more than just buildings used for storage, housing, religious purposes, simple functionality; it is a great manifestation of the commonality of man, the great connecting factor of humankind. However, it can be argued that the ancient and classic forms or architecture are in essence more “profound…lasting… [and] inexhaustible” than those of their modern counterparts, because of some key differences in the ways ancient and modern architecture are practiced.
The paper tries to identify the techniques applied in postmodern architecture in the similarities to traditionalism that leads to the revision of old knowledge and revival of traditional forms through tangible or intangible activities. The
