My score on the PRCA-24 was a 100 which lands me in the high level of communication apprehension area. A further breakdown of my score is as follows: Group Discussion-26, Meetings-26, Interpersonal Conversations-24, and Public Speaking-24. Since I am a very antisocial person, I knew my score would be very high. I am so antisocial that I rarely order my own food at a fast food restaurant when I am with a group. This type of situations will only intensify as I begin public speaking, so I am in desperate need of management strategies. After reading the first few chapters of the book, I have produced the strategies below.
1. Practice! Practice! Practice! If I practice and am well prepared, I will feel less anxious about speaking.

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen - I’m not an experienced public speaker, so I find it easier just to read the speech word for word. Second, to improve the delivery of my speech I am going to stop saying “like” so much. In order to do this I am going to practice my speech 10 times in the mirror so I have a better idea of what I want to say and how the speech is going to flow. I was always a shy person who spent most of his time by himself because I was always had the impression of being ignored by others which is why I never I had the courage to speak in front of a crowd or even a small group. Communication is an interesting field of study because we learn so much about it in our everyday lives. While in class we took the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension created by Jim McCroskey in the 1970’s. Communication apprehension consists of four parts: group, meeting, dyadic, and public apprehension. Each part relates to how well one does when in a social situation and how comfortable one may be during certain scenarios of social interaction. Through testing one can see how comfortable they feel in different settings.
For the aforementioned reasons, there is no doubt that fears and shy had been controlled myself throughout the years. Developing self-confidence through preparation refers to making a good speech that to be presented before the audience. Don’t take it easy to prepare for the speech, it’s not like memorizing the speech or memorizing the phrases but we have to be preparing for it at least a before week the speech to be presented. Just make it a habit like reading about that subject and discuss it with the friends and practice it for long.

Throughout the semester I became a more confident public speaker. The first assignment that we had to do for our education class was to introduce our self. I practiced what I was going to say and how I was going to say it that weekend. However, when I got up to present my mind went completely blank. Throughout the course of the semester I learned what I need to have up with me when I present do that I do not blank on what I wanted to say. In the beginning when I got up to present my heart was racing and my hands were shaking. Now I make sure I breathe and tell myself that I know what I am going to talk about. So I still don’t talking in public but I feel more comfortable doing it. I need to work on being more confident when I have to present a topic. Talking to Mrs. Nealy after my mini lesson I have more confidence when I am talking about a math concept than any other topic. Throughout the semester my writing skills have greatly improved. The thing I need to work on is managing my time better so that I have more time to edit my papers.
The first part of the communication module was public speaking. Before attending the communication module, I was not quite proficient in public speaking. Some of weaknesses during public speaking included improper eye contact, static position during speech making, too much focus on the slides of presentation, poor voice variations, less emphasis on non verbal gestures, etc. ironically, I took these weakness for granted and never tried to realize their negative effect on my speech making. To me, public speaking simply meant to utter few words. I never tried to make a relationship with my audience during the public speaking. Instead, I also used to take the audience for granted.
Barriers to communication need to be avoided and in order to avoid communication barriers your voice should be projected and clear without hesitation. You should face your listen if you are talking face to face. There are ways to reduce barriers in communication, for example, by making sure there is not a loud background noise which can avert the attention of your audience. Having mobile turned off so it does not distract the audience. Make sure you are concentrated so that you don’t forget what you are going to say.
