I have had no prior experience in the field of mental health. My undergraduate degree is in biology and I spent most of my life working in the field of BioScience. Sense I have already started at the clinic, I can say it is an amazing experience. Each of the other counselors are in their supervisory period of their licensure. They each are very different and have different styles and specialties. I truly enjoy the diversity. My favorite part is the group supervision when we talk about our clients and they bring challenges or concerns. My role as the practicum learner is to obtained as much knowledge and understanding of the counseling profession utilizing my practicum experience, my sight supervisor’s guidance, the courseroom instructor and platform. It is also the learner’s responsibility to avoid plagiarism in all work that is submitted. My site supervisor’s primary role in my overall practicum is to provide me with guidance and support. Within the confines of that role she will also provide feedback about my sessions and case presentation in an effort to encourage personal growth for myself and for my clients (Russell-Chapin, 2016). The function of my courseroom instructor is to provide support to the practicum and provide feedback throughout the practicum experience. To ensure that this assignment was completed appropriately, I made certain of my understanding of models and theories related to counseling and clinical supervision. The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. However, paraprofessionals are often not treated as equals and has created some ethical judgement regarding treatment of the paraprofessionals from other teachers and administrators in the business of education. I want to use this assignment as an opportunity to distinguish the true professional using the elements designed for this course.
As a counselor-in-training, seeing the look on my client’s face after discovering a self-awareness and connecting thoughts to action provides me with a sense of my own professional progression. Through helping others, I have an increased self-awareness and appreciation for the relationships in my own life. Throughout this Master’s program, I was forced to self-examine my integrity, morals, and priorities as means for choosing on this profession. Another reward through counseling clients involves how I interact with professionals, clients, and family members. Utilizing active listening and feeling reflection outside of sessions has increased my own satisfaction to show others how interested and invested I am when talking with various individuals.
The professional mental health counselor I interviewed is my faculty advisor and her name is Dr. Konja Kleeper. She has many credentials and certifications and, as my faculty advisor, is aligned with my licensure and career goals. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). She also informed me that any credentials beyond the LPCC and NCC are up to my own discretion.

A walk through demonstration and rationale discussion completed the WinMed experience. Learning about emergency lighting, testing of emergency lighting, fire extinguishers use/deployment/charge monitoring, sprinkler systems with backflow prevention valve, smoke detector yearly cleaning, cleaning of general areas including bathrooms, trash pickup and disposal, biohazard disposal, sharp containers, standard precautions, and biohazard facility pick up opened my eyes wide to a whole new world.
As a counselor in training, there are many skills that I still need to improve. Being able to work with actual clients broaden my view of counseling. Clients would discuss experiences that are unexpected to the counselor, and counselors need to be ready at any moment. It is fascinating for me to learn that although clients might be experiencing similar difficulties such as anxiety or depression, each client has a unique story behind them. Although I encounter some difficulties working with clients, being able to apply the skills that we learned in actual session helps me to further understand how to work with them. In comparison to practicing with colleagues, working with actual clients helps me have a better sense of how to better interact with them. Other than that, I was able to experience how clients would react to counselors’ comments or questions. It is important to learn that clients do not always respond the way that the counselor wants them to.
One theme of the book that stands out is the counselor as a person and a professional. It is impossible to completely separate one’s personal and professional lives. Each person brings to the table certain characteristics of themselves and this could include such things as values, personality traits and experiences. A great point that Corey, Corey, and Callahan (2010) make is to seek personal therapy. Talking with colleagues or a therapist will keep counselors on their toes and allow them to work out any issues that may arise. This could also prevent counselors from getting into a bad situation. Another good point made in this book was counter transference. Therapists are going to have an opinion and some reactions are going to show through. It is not easy to hide one’s emotions, but a good therapist will keep the objective in sight and keep moving forward. After all, the help counselors are providing is for the client.

When entering into counseling relationship with clients, clinicians have rights to protect their clients as well as their selves from any an ethical or legal violations when it comes to client / therapist professional obligations and relationship. Therefore, it should be counselors’ sense of duty “to review in writing and verbally with clients
Counselors have a tremendous responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the counseling relationship and support the client’s trust. They must seek high levels of training and education in the ethical application of counseling practices. It is these practices and professional values that empower clients and families to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals of their own. Helping professionals have an ethical obligation and professional responsibility to clients to protect their rights, warn and protect, record-keeping protection, counselor self-care, advocacy, and counselor values.
One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
