The community assessment is a great tool to use to better understand the issues of a community. A social worker can develop a method of researching a community using a variety of sources, and identifying the community’s assets, or things that can be used to improve the community. The research is used to appraise the current status of a community and develop a plan to make improvements. The areas research can include the economy, health, housing, education, social systems, and the overall attractiveness of a community. Once completed the assessment will help to develop an intervention plan that can be presented to the community leaders to study and implement if found to be feasible.

This community analysis of Powdersville will gather qualitative data using ethnographic research methods to develop an assessment of the community’s needs. The focus of the analysis will be in the areas of the community members, its economic characteristics, community values, social problems, oppression and discrimination, power structure, and human services. The information obtained from the assessment will hopefully provide a better picture of the community’s needs, its people and available resources that can be utilized to expand non-profit services, make this area a magnet to potential businesses, tourism, and people looking to relocate to a progressive area for work and a safe place to live and raise a …show more content…

Some neighborhoods are located where many can get to work in just a few minutes, most with a fifteen to thirty-minute commute to the neighboring cities of Greenville, Anderson, Clemson, and Spartanburg to get to work. Most households are upper-middleclass with a small percentage (>17%) falling below the poverty line.
The city’s major areas of employment are Health Care and Social Services, Retail, Manufacturing, Education, and Construction. “Pickens County is home to a diverse industrial community that includes an industry-leading producer of fire suppression devices, a manufacturer of mobile kitchens for the military, a high-tech medical device manufacturer, a variety of metal fabrication and machining operations.” (Alliance Pickens South Carolina, USA, n.d.)
