In 1979, under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, China began to become economically globalized through many economic reforms. The first reform offered price and ownership incentives for farmers, which allowed them to sell a portion of their crops to the free market, rather than the government monopolizing the whole market (Morrison, 4). Four special economic zones, along the coast, were established by the government in order to try and attract foreign direct investment. This helped to boosts exports for China, and further, allows China to import better technology from the foreign investments (Morrison, 4). In addition to the four economic zones, other cities on the coast were “designated open cities” which allowed them to practice “free market …show more content…
According to the World Bank, extreme poverty is when individuals live on less than $1.25 a day based on purchasing power parity. The Global Wealth Report from 2013 claims that, “Wealth per adult in China has grown robustly since 2000,” and although China’s currency has appreciated, “the rise in wealth reflects real growth” (“Global Wealth Report,” 48). Yet, “Significant inequality is created by the strong urban-rural divide in China” (“Global Wealth Report,” 48). Those who were wealthy, like successful entrepreneurs and professionals, continue to grow financially, helping China account for over one million millionaires (“Global Wealth Report,” 48). However, while it may have raised some to new financial heights, the newfound wealth of China was not equally distributed among the citizens. The Theil index, used to measure economic inequality shows continued divides between the wealth of the richest and poorest citizens and helps to equate for different regional elements that other inequality measurements fail to identify. From 1987 to about 2008, where there was an economic crisis, the Theil Inequality Index for China rose from 0.012516 to 0.0823007, a 0.0697847 increase in disparity. This is shown in Figure 1 (Appendix) taken from the University of Texas Inequality Project. The divide between the people is present between provinces and sectors, which really just means that the economic inequality is present in any given
Everyday people in China are suffering from their government. From being wrongly accused to being executed for petty crimes. In a country where you cannot speak your opinions, talk poorly about government officials, speak about Chinese communist failures, or even browse the internet freely. China has kept its citizens in the void. One example is the great firewall of china, which sensors most social media and other sites. This essay will go into some individual stories of the Chinese government's unfair social injustices towards its people.
The political and economic events caused by foreign imperialism in China led to drastic political, economic and social changes in the Qing Dynasty. Foreign imperialism during the 1800s caused internal struggles within the country and international struggles like the Opium Wars, which resulted in changes that deeply impacted Qing China.
This topic about helping poor people get out of poverty is a critical issue. Almost 800 million people across the globe, most of them children, live with hunger or malnutrition as a regular fact of life. They live in desperate poverty, which means they die younger than they should, struggle with hunger and disease, and live with little hope and less opportunity for a life of dignity (USCCB). Poverty poses a dramatic problem of justice; in its various forms and with its various effects, it is characterized by an unequal growth that does not recognize the "equal right of all people to take their seat ‘at the table of the common banquet' (Social Doctrine of the Church) ."
In talking about poverty, it is very broad. You can talk about poverty in our lives, poverty in spiritual life, and other things that we experienced poverty. Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not being able to go to school, not knowing how to read, and not being able to speak properly. Poverty is not having job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, and lack of freedom.
Today’s world is faced with numerous social problems that pose enormous threats to humanity. Many of these problems threaten our very survival. Poverty is an issue that plagues all societies in every part of the world. Not even the most privileged countries can seemingly avoid it. It has a huge presence in the United States which is one of the wealthiest nations in the world.

In today 's society, there is 1 in 7 people living in poverty which is costing Canadian citizens’ money as they are paying for taxes. There are many standpoints in which people examine the ways poverty affect society such as Marx’s conflict theory. Marx’s conflict theory goes over how social stratification being inevitable and how there is a class consciousness within people in the working class. Another way that poverty is scrutinized is by feminization. Feminization is the theory that will be explored throughout this essay. Poverty will be analyzed in this essay to determine the significance of poverty on the society and the implications that are produced.
Poverty is an outcome of the mode of production and plays a large role in relation to production. Therefore, according to Marx, it is a contributor to the economic base. People who are living at poverty level struggles to meet the living necessities due to capitalist exchange values on productions. What I mean by this that people in poverty cannot afford to buy enough food, clothes, and most importantly a safe home for their kids. This is due to the fact that most people living in poverty are being paid minimum wages that does not meet the exchange values of commodities. People in poverty are the laborers in the capitalist world, they a commodity as well. Using Marx’s theory, people in poverty are the proletariats since they are the actual

“Why should I pay higher taxes so that some lazy poor person can pick up another unemployment check and go back on their couch and spend my money?”(Johnson). Does this sound recognizable? Unfortunately most of us have heard these anti-welfare point of view bountiful times before. Recent Census data display that about 48.5 million people equivalent to about 16% of the population are currently dealing with poverty (Johnson). This is the fourth continuous year that the poverty rate has expanded. The recession launched a vastly great deal of Americans into poverty, and despite the economy now repairing, wages are still delayed and people continue to battle nationwide. For plentiful, the only remedy is to curve to safety net programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, child care assistance, TANF, and unemployment benefits, to name a few. The ability to rise from poverty can be accomplished with one willingly to succeed however with society trying to over help them makes them lackadaisical so I would blame the structures of the society such as the economic structure and the fluctuations.
Gans (1971) stated in modern society there are few events that can be considered functional or dysfunctional for society, and that most events result in benefits to some groups, while they present a cost to other groups. Poverty provides a great example of the negative impact on one group of society while providing benefits to another group in society. “All human endeavors have benefits and costs, material and nonmaterial, and that most such endeavors produce benefits for some people and groups and reparations for others. Even some of the most costly social evils benefit someone” (Gans, 2012). Poverty provides numerous benefits for the wealthy. However, the poor can also benefit from the wealthy.
What is poverty? Poverty can be defined in many different ways but according to the encyclopedia, poverty is the lack of many things like basic human needs, for example clean and fresh water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter. The inability to afford them is what causes poverty. The cause and effect of poverty placed in many different places. Some may say that poverty can be the result from lack of money but the truth lies deeper than that. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the major causes and sub causes, as well as effects of poverty. Some are education, hunger, health insurance, homelessness, crimes and some of the sub causes as depression, obesity, substandard housing and stress.
The rich, the middle class, and the poor; are described by the way we live and the amount of money one has. There are many different ways of describing what poverty is, whether it is by how you live or how much money you have. What is poverty and what does it mean to be poor? Not many of us know the true meaning of these terms. Poverty is an issue dealt with throughout the world, but we are not all aware if its conditions. Poverty is a very serious problem around the world. Poverty is defined as the equality to poorness and impoverishment -- (the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions). A question to ask ourselves is: “Should poverty be defined strictly in terms of monetary income, as opposed to some qualitative formula which takes into consideration styles of life as well as material possessions?” (Sheppard 13) Because there are so many different ways we can express the term poverty, maybe there should be a certain way we can determine poverty world wide? A person might look like they are poor or think that they are, but by definition they really are not even close. Every country has poverty levels that decide if they are poor or not. The Philippines is a country that deals with this issue on a daily basis.
