This topic about helping poor people get out of poverty is a critical issue. Almost 800 million people across the globe, most of them children, live with hunger or malnutrition as a regular fact of life. They live in desperate poverty, which means they die younger than they should, struggle with hunger and disease, and live with little hope and less opportunity for a life of dignity (USCCB). Poverty poses a dramatic problem of justice; in its various forms and with its various effects, it is characterized by an unequal growth that does not recognize the "equal right of all people to take their seat ‘at the table of the common banquet' (Social Doctrine of the Church) ." Poverty is a critical issue around the world. If no one shines a light on the situation, nothing will be done to help fix problem issues poor people face by being stuck in poverty. Inside the class, there was a lot of great information presented about the topic from great people like Dorothy Day, and Pope Benedict. CST which stands for Catholic Social Teaching touched on this subject a lot. CST has a few main points which are the promotion of human dignity through a just distribution of wealth (U.S. Catholic). Some people may not know that public authorities are not protecting the rights of poor. (U.S. Catholic). From all the materials we read inside of class the best way to help take poor people out of poverty is by taking action and assist them in. In The Long Loneliness, Dorothy Day started a very powerful movement that helped many people called the Catholic Worker movement. In The story, her husband Peter Maurin said: "we are our brother's keeper, and the unit of society is the family: that we must have a sense of personal responsibility." The world would become a better because everyone is looking out for each other. No one is too big or too small to help end this horrible thing everyone must play his or her role in putting an end to poverty. In the lecture by Pope Benedict named Caritas in Veritate, he talks about Charity and justice. In the text, he says "Charity is at the heart of the Church social doctrine" (Benedict XVI). This point shows why you should do charity and different things to help the poor. Everyone should help because it is one of the most important points in our teaching. Another great point that the text talks about is comparing justice to Charity. In the text, it says "every society draws up its own system of justice. Charity goes beyond justice, because to love is to give, to offer what is "mine" to the other; but it never lacks justice, which prompts us to give the other what is "his", what is due to him by reason of his being or his acting.
