The nurse that the student interviewed works as a home care nurse for about 6 years. Before going into home care nursing, the nurse worked as a post-op orthopedics nurse. For this assignment I was able to interview Regina Bowman RN, BSN. Her current position is that of the Director of Medical Surgical Nursing. Her position places her over top of seven nursing units between two facilities. Regina graduated from the Mercer Medical School of Nursing in 1979 with her diploma in nursing. The Mercer medical school of nursing is still in operation although it has been renamed the Capital Health School of Nursing. Her return to school started after graduation. She enrolled at Mercer County Community College to obtain her Associates. Secondly she attended La Salle University and received her Bachelor’s in Nursing in 2003. Lastly she is currently enrolled at the Thomas Edison State University, and has a prospective graduation of 2011 with her Masters Degree in Nursing. Regina has work in many clinical jobs, both in and out the hospital. Initially she began her nursing carrier as a medical surgical nurse shortly after graduation. After she gained experience she worked in the emergency room only to return to med-surge as an assistant manager. Subsequently the unit in which she worked closed and Regina was placed in an outpatient setting managing hospital owned physician groups. This position leads to her return as the manager of 7 East a general medical unit. This position eventually gave her the opportunity to hold her current position as a hospital director.

The intent is to gain insight into the role higher education plays in presenting more opportunities for diverse career path. WG is a nurse practitioner who works with pulmonary physicians in a private practice setting. Furthermore, “Nearly three percentages were in faculty positions and approximately one percent was in administrative positions”(Health Resources and Services Administration 2016).
Nursing involves the ability to gather data from any given situation and process it in a manner that may benefit the patient, potentially resulting in positive outcomes for all involved. To provide effective culturally competent care, a nurse must be able to approach any given situation with an open mind, willing to set aside personal bias and prejudice. Knowing where one stands is the first step in understanding where one may improve.
There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses make up the single largest healthcare profession in the United States. “A public health nurse is a nurse who works to promote and protect the health of an entire population” (Allender, Rector, & Warner, 2010, p. 839) the public health nurse I chose to interview was Barbara, she currently works for the Health department and has been there for three years. During the interview Barbara discussed the requirements for a public health nurse. The individual must have the ability to exercise independent judgment, planning and able to administer safe effective public nursing care. In addition be able to work effectively with individuals and families to assist them in the satisfactory solution of health problems, by recognizing and respecting of different cultural, ethnic and difference on health care practices. The nurse is also required to know disease prevention such as, different techniques on teaching, counseling, interviewing and resources available. Barbara stated that the most important part of being a public health nurse is being able to care. Barbara acknowledged that there are numerous individuals that she assists everyday that just want someone to exhibit that they care and understand. The education a public health nurse should obtain is a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which Barbara posses. “Public health nurses working with specific populations or in administration position should hold a master’s degree” ( Allender et al., 2010, p.839). Barbara discussed that before becoming a public health nurse she worked at St. Francis Hospital as med-surge nurse for five years, after that it was imperative that she change working environment. Barbara confirmed that working as a nurse in the hospital was extremely diverse then working as public health nurse. “Comparing public health nurse and general nurse, public health nursing is population based, focuses on the greater good, health promotion and disease prevention, and utilizes community resources. The general nursing is individual based, focuses on individual good, restoration of health and function, and manage resources at hand” (Minnesota Department of Health, 2007). In the beginning Barbara thought that public health nursing would be a difficult job to gain knowledge of however, she established that it was exceptionally effortless and gratifying career to posses. Barbara stated that she did not realize how much assistance was out there for the public until; she worked as public health nurse. Barbara spends 95% of her day going from place to place by doing home visits, investigating different cases, assisting with screening programs and enormous amount of paper work.
Nursing is a discipline of knowledge acquired through formal education and through life experiences. My philosophy of nursing is to always see the beauty in the art of being a nurse. I chose nursing as my profession as caring for people and the nursing profession is a true art form.
During my early years in practicing nursing, if asked what my thoughts were on nursing and how I know what I know, my response would have been that nursing was the act of caring for others and the knowledge we learned in nursing school. But throughout the years of education, experience and life my definition of nursing has evolved.
