Term nursing is defined differently by different people and organisation. International council of nurse define nursing as; “it is a profession to care of individual of different ages, families, groups and communities who are unwell, disabled and dying. They have also great role in preventing diseases, caring and monitoring pregnant women” They are considered as family member of people who are in hospital or in nursing home because they give continues care while they are there. According to Australian College of Nursing, “nursing is art of caring with people which they learnt from study. It enables to working in diverse field like hospital, community health, prisons, homes etc. Nurses also involve in educating patients and take active part in health promotion activities”. Virginia Henderson (1897- 1996) describe nursing in functional term; he says main job of nurse is to assist individual or sick people about their health and its recovery without any aid if we have necessary strength. Florence nightingale says the word nursing is used to want for better. She believe use of fresh air, light, quiet, administration diet are all power of patients.
As we know everything has its own history likewise nursing has its own history and it is most important aspect of any field. Nursing is believed as an oldest art and youngest to professions. This word is coming from Latin word nutricius which means nourishment. The first recorded nurse is in 2700 BC in which ancient Egyptian hired woman for child birth. The period of 1600-1850 is considered as darkest period in nursing history. Hospitals and health care setting were charitable institute, there weren’t any trained staffs. They are also supporting member for elderly people in many nursing home. They help old people in their daily activities like feeding, showering, gowning, toileting etc. In early 19th people never get support while they are old but today they get any type of support at any age because of nursing.
Thus, nursing is most important profession at this stage of human development. It seems that hospitals are very lonely without the nurses. We can see about 50% of staffs in hospital are nurses. In the conclusion we can say great people in the history of nursing like Florence nightingale, Virginia Henderson, Dorothy Smith, Mary Elizabeth Carnegie etc helps to get nursing in this stage.
