Does our current education system really educate the whole child spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, morally, and physically? Or, is it too much focus placed on performance on standardized tests? Positive Psychology is the study of well-being of individuals and communities and what enables them to flourish and thrive. Out of Martin Seligman's development of the idea of Positive Psychology has developed the idea of Positive Education. Positive Education focuses on using individual talents, strengths, and intrinsic (personally meaningful) motivation to aid in learning. An emphasis is also placed on the importance of encouraging creativity in students. America's schools of the 21st century have much to do to transform into schools of Positive Education verses the one-size-fits-all view that is currently in place in the majority of schools.
Positive psychology refers to strengths as positive qualities we each have as individuals. There are a few base principles to remember when working on strengths. It is important to value and develop individual talents, maintain healthy relationships, reflect on successes, practice, and teach others. It is important to focus on strengths and manage weaknesses. Our schools of today need to find ways to promote students into using their individual strengths. In classrooms individual talents should be valued and developed. For instance, one student in a class may be very strategic who is able to see patterns and issues within a project. This same class may also have someone analytical who likes to search for reasons as causes. In other words just think how well our children could do if we came up with more personalized curriculum for each child and customized the studies to each individual's circumstances.
Many children in today's classrooms have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD). If more people were to consider how intensely stimulating this world is today, and consider the affect this has on children, maybe this diagnoses would be reconsidered. This diagnoses has also risen with the implementation of more and more standardized testing. With standardized testing, there has become more sitting at a desk and less hands on activites than in the past.

As a student in the school system, there are many mental conditions that could affect how they perform on a daily basis. One of the most prevalent is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is defined as “a disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity (Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine). There is much research that is currently being done on this subject as it does impact many students in the K-12 system. These words are being most commonly discussed by most educators, physicians, psychologists and young parents in the society today. In spite of extensive advancements in technology which has brought new insights into the brain and learning, there is still a lacuna in the field of problems faced by children who are unable to remain focused on the task given to them in the classroom owing to their inability to pay attention.
Many children exhibit such behaviors as energetic, running, jumping, playing, and excitement in their daily learning activities. But at what point is a child’s exuberant behavior considered to be hyperactive? All children are supposed to be full of life, wonder, and questions. Today, though, it seems that these qualities are not appreciated; they are seen as compulsions that need to be controlled. While it is true that hyperactivity, compulsivity, and inattention are symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder, these can also be symptoms of other issues.
As a college student, the amount of students on powerful meds for ADHD and ADD is shocking. It is a topic seen in every classroom and heard in many dialogues. Conversations can be overheard frequently about how easy meds are to get and how effortless it is to receive a diagnosis. However, while I know that a vast number of students are taking prescription drugs for ADHD, I don’t think that I ever realized the full extent to which this disorder was effecting America’s youth. It wasn’t until I spent my time volunteering as a paraprofessional in a fourth grade classroom that I felt I truly understood the weight that the number of ADHD diagnosis’s were having on our nation’s children. The supervising teacher I was working with told me that in her classroom of 22 children, six of them were on some sort of prescription medication for ADHD, and many parents that I spoke to tended to blow off the risk factors involved, remarking that the drugs improved their school performance. I was shocked at this figure, especially because after working with the children, even on the days that they forgot to take their medicine, I found that by using different methods of instruction, many of the children didn’t seem to have much less trouble focusing than the children who did not have ADHD. So when we were assigned this paper, I set out to disprove the myth that children who act out in school have must ADHD and need to be put on prescription drugs in order to do well in school.
The purpose of this research was to describe and understand Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the most effective treatment options that are available today. ADHD is a mental health disorder that affects 3-9% of the population in ways that, if left untreated, can wreak havoc on the mind of the sufferer. It makes concentration difficult, large tasks seem insurmountable, and causes impulsive and hyperactive tendencies. Fortunately, research and experiments have led to new and effective treatments to help those who suffer from this disorder (Dupaul 8). This research examined journal articles and internet sources on the topic to help unlock the complexities of the disorder through scientific research. It also was a way to separate the myths of the disorder from the truths, while discovering the causes, diagnosis methods, and best treatment alternatives to battle this prevalent disorder.
Political correctness and the constant fear of impending litigation from any number of sources has forced society to find other means through which they can control their children. Though other avenues for treatment exist, recent developments in educational and familial systems have produced a situation where children are over prescribed stimulant medications to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder for educational purposes. For that reason, we must consider the appropriate treatment for ADHD in education. Four main aspects to this issue need to be discussed in order to fully understand the situation: a description of ADHD, the symptoms of ADHD, the statistical information regarding the over prescription and a description/history of stimulant use, and some possible alternatives to drug therapy.
In April 2004, a journal, Pediatrics, described that the greater the amount of television watched by a toddler, the greater risk for him to develop an attention disorder later on in childhood, as described by researchers at a children's hospital in Seattle, Washington. “For each extra hour per day of TV time, the risk of concentration difficulties increases by 10 percent” (Sprinkle 1). A child is more likely to be diagnosed with an attention disorder like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) when they view a television program. ADHD and ADD both effect the child's ability to stay attentive to one thing for a normal amount of time, which will, in turn, make the comprehension of the education he receives tougher than that of a child who has a normal attention span.
It has been known since the beginning of time that not all people have the same brain function, social graces or self control. Children have daydreamed, been distracted, wiggled and have been routinely disruptive in classrooms. The condition dubbed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a new name for old behaviors. It has only been the last 40 or so years that these behaviors have become known as a disorder. They were previously accepted, on the most part, as common childhood behavior that would be outgrown. The controversy over the treatment, Ritalin, during the 1960s is when ADHD became well known (Conrad 563). Before that children and their families managed to survive without the labeling and medicating of children who didn’t fit perfectly into the mold. The brain function of a child with ADHD may be different, but who’s to say that difference needs to be changed. The person with ADHD still gets the job done, just differently, with a lot more effort and creativity. There are many who benefit from an ADHD diagnosis, the child is not always one of them.
The CDC website is a government sponsored website that provides the public with details about various diseases and disorders. Specifically, it has a section on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder which details everything from symptoms and diagnostics to managing ADHD in the educational environment. This section of the website is meant to give a sufficient amount of information for the general public looking into ADHD for the first time. The information is nowhere near a complete analysis of ADHD, but it sufficiently informs the reader. It also directs the reader to various other websites if they are in need of more information. The webpages contain many of the elements of pathos, logos, and ethos, which will be analyzed in the following paragraphs.
