Tony Stark, A billionaire entrepreneur and mastermind inventor, as shown in the movie Iron Man is conducting artillery tests out of the country, but terrorists abducted him to build a tormenting weapon. Instead, he puts together an armored suit and was able to escape, which led him to become the superhero Iron Man. In this paper, I will discuss positive psychology. Positive Psychology "focuses on wellbeing, happiness, flow, personal strengths, wisdom, creativity, and imagination." present, which focuses on concepts such as happiness and flow experiences; (3) the future, with concepts including optimism and hope." (Introduction to Positive Psychology Pg.3) Tony's superhero power is based on his advanced studious implementation. In the earliest "Iron Man" movie, the birth of a superhero is elucidated. Tony Stark comes out of a distressing desert cave with an astounding suit and a gratitude for the greater good. This new, seemingly selfless moral spark is important to understanding Tony Stark, but his narcissistic tendencies would continue into the future. Before Tony was Iron Man, he showed little to no interest in what was actually going on in his company; he was more concerned with living an immature playboy lifestyle. He seems to have some sense of belonging in the world, though it consisted of high level of social activity, puts others in danger, including Pepper and Rhodes, and does not think about consequences until they come up. As previously mentioned positive psychology focuses on experiences at three time points, one being the past, centering on safety, contentment and satisfaction. Stark feels his importance shines over others. In the movie, Iron Man Tony was never worried or concerned about anymore more than the materialistic things, because he is extremely rich and successful he thinks that is all that matters. A case in point would be how Tony Starks exploits Pepper for a good portion of the movie by making her complete a lot of the dirty work for the company while he sits back and plays with his projects. As well as when Rhode says to Stark " I know you don't care about me about you don't even respect yourself; you are constitutionally incapable of being responsible."(Iron Man) This shows he is satisfied with the way things are therefore meeting his requirements for safety and security with his money until uncertainty circumstances occurred. In light of Tony Sparks past circumstances, it brought him to his current situation, his present.
"(2) the present, which focuses on concepts such as happiness and flow experiences;" (Introduction to Positive Psychology Pg.3) In Positive Psychology, flow experiences is being able to "Clear goals that, while challenging, are still attainable." (Positive Psychology: A Critical Introduction) This is what Tony did, after he had returned home, he makes an announcement saying, "I had my eyes opened. I came to realize that I had more to offer this world than just making things that blow up. And that is why, effective immediately, I am shutting down the weapons manufacturing division of Stark Industries." (Iron Man) Tony tries to do well, and he does. His life arc is trying to make himself an improved person, to make up for his guiltiness at being a weapons dealer to terrorist in his earlier life. He saves the public. He saves entire cities, more or less at the cost of his life. He is and has proved himself to be a man of valor, even though he sometimes makes the wrong choices and sometimes his arrogant side …show more content…
emerges. With this in mind, Tony Stark's future for himself as well as Iron Man is full of hope. Tonys optimism and hope is why he is able to flourish with his newfound identity as well as his personal relationships and his inner self. Which brings us to ; (3) the future, with concepts including optimism and hope." (Introduction to Positive Psychology Pg.3). According to, Bailey in the Journal The Journal of Positive Psychology: "While we strive to make the best decisions, and hope for the best, we are all subject to biases in our decision making." A positive emotionally charged person is not only more effective and efficient but serves to attract and retain the best talent. Positive emotions are not only pleasurable, but can broaden our perspective and build our resources to better equip us to handle future challenges and potentially improve our future decision making ability. This is shown in his future appearances in the Iron Man movies. Positive Psychology focuses on happiness, personal strengths, wisdom, inventiveness, and imagination.

Nevertheless, Tony does not forget the root of who that person

“Excelsior! I’m gonna take all this negativity and use it as fuel and I’m gonna find a silver lining. That’s what I’m gonna do” (Russell, 2013). A silver lining is defined as having optimism or a positive outlook on a situation that might seem gloomy on the outside. Silver Linings Playbook is centered around Pat Solitono Jr, a middle-aged man who just spent eight months in a psychiatric hospital for beating the man whom his wife had an affair with. Pat leaves the hospital determined to accomplish his unrealistic goal of winning his wife back. His motto is “Excelsior” (Russell, 2013) and he uses this to fuel his actions. He believes every negative action can result in a positive action. He also believes he can rise up and be superior over his actions and others to win his wife back. Pat has Bipolar I disorder with manic episodes that can be seen played out in the movie. He himself states, “undiagnosed bipolar with mood swings and weird thinking brought on by stress” (Russell, 2013).
In Bless Me, Ultima, Rudolfo Anaya defends the assertion, “for in much wisdom there is much grief, and increase of knowledge is increase of sorrow,” from Ecclesiastes. Tony endures many trials throughout the novel, therefore increasing his knowledge of life but also increasing his grief and sorrow. After witnessing Lupito’s death, Tony realizes that people are not always what they appear to be. Tony also begins to question his religion because of trials in the novel, some of which include Lucas’ cure and the sighting of the golden carp. In his trek during the blizzard, Tony learns of his brother’s sinful doings and he witnesses the death of a good man. Tony gains much knowledge in these scenes, but, unfortunately, with this knowledge comes grief.
Maria had no authority over her restless family. The source of the conflict between Antonio and Maria originates from her oldest sons taking to going where they please and not caring about their parent’s wishes. The burden of pleasing their parents passes from the eldest sons to the youngest one. With the sole duty of pleasing his parents, Tony internally rebels against their wishes instead seeking to set to rest his churning mind by seeking his own beliefs. His brothers console themselves about abandoning their family by saying that “Tony will be her priest” (Anaya 36) and not knowing that the “dreams of their father and mother [haunt] them” (Anaya 36) also haunted Antonio. Having the responsibilities of his brothers and his family shape the way he grows and thinks. He isn’t just thinking about himself he also has the problems of redeeming his family on his head. Through the story and through Ultima Tony realizes that he is not bound by obligations and can instead shape his own
In the end, Tony plays the role of both hero and villain. His wife, Marcela, represents both the whore and the virgin Mexican-American. The both prove unfaithful: Tony to America and Marcela to Mexico. Herein lays the schizophrenic world in which good and bad coexist across the borders of two emerging world countries struggling for control of land and culture. There’s a price to be paid for such human greed and unrealistic expectations. Ultimately it proves to be a place where virtue doesn’t remain intact and villains abound, even among the good guys!
insight and very wise advice from his elders. The story shadows Tony as he seeks
This essay will explore one of the possible combinations of theories on personality and explain how it can be applied in practical therapy.
From being kidnapped to fighting off an alien invasion, Tony Stark has seen it all, but have these many adventures finally left their mark on him? In the newest instalment of the Iron Man franchise we are introduced to a new Tony. Gone is the confident egotistical billionaire we all love, replaced with a sleep deprived stressed-out workaholic. In the real world we would expect these many exploits to take their toll on an individual, but for this comic book turned movie, the introduction of the possibility of a psychological disorder took many fans by surprise. By the films halfway point there was one question lingering in the minds of many: “Does Tony Stark have PTSD?”
Personality predispositions can determine levels of extraversion, which determine the levels to which one seeks social support, thus determining positive affect. Similarly, personality predispositions can determine levels of neuroticism that may influence one’s style of coping in the face of both positive and negative external factors which can determine negative affect (Diener, 1996). Happiness, a core aspect of positive subjective wellbeing, involves maintaining a superior level of positive affect in comparison to negative effect, based on specific positive or negative emotions linked to the recent experiences in one’s life (Emmons & Diener, 1985). Positive emotions such as joy and pride must trump negative emotions such as frustration and sadness in the recent past or present in order for an individual to feel happy. Life satisfaction builds on this and is a cognitive valuation of the quality of an individual’s experiences as a sum throughout their entire life (Emmons & Diener, 1985). Individual personality traits have been found to influence the different patterns and levels of life satisfaction, positive and negative affects and simply general, overall happiness (McCrae, 1983).
Positive Psychology is the strengths and virtues a person or a community poses that lead to its optimal performance and allow it to thrive. This is a beneficial study that has the chance to improve the lives of many as well as preventing some negative situations. This review looks into what Positive Psychology is and how it impacts our lives. The sources I selected look into a broad overview of Positive Psychology, and it looks into deeper more specific aspects of Positive Psychology. This review has to lead me to believe that if we see ourselves and the future in a positive way it will have a positive effect on our lives.
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something- your gut, destiny, life, home, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life” (Steve Jobs, 1955). Throughout all of my 25 years blessed on planet earth, my personality have somewhat been compared to that of a roller coaster, filled with many ups and downs, positives and negatives, rewards and punishments. As such, I have frequently embarked on numerous journeys in a dyer attempt to discover and recollect the shattered fragments left of me. With this being said, the term personality however, could be defined as “the patterns of behavior and ways of thinking and feeling that are distinctive for each individual” (Tischler, 2007). At the completion of this paper, I intend to achieve answers to some pertinent questions for instance how has the development of personality affected or impacted on human nature. I also hope to discover the various transitions of my personality starting from infancy to present and the reason or motives behind such changes. Finally, I would like to be able to gain an in-depth understanding of a variety of Personality Theories especially the Psychoanalytical Theory of
Nowadays, we can see so many hero type people in our society. Different culture and different countries will appear different types of hero. Hero gave us confident and we can trust them. I have chosen two heroes to compare and contrast based on cultural aspect and what they act. The two heroes are The Batman and Iron Man.
Positive Psychology is about building what is right in an athlete and also in “work, education, insight, love, growth, and play” (Seligman, 2002, p. 3). It is a science, “looks at what is right” in athletes, and focuses on when they are “their best” (Biswas-Diener, 2010, p. 5). Seligman (2002) believes that the disease model has not moved us closer to preventing mental illness and that human strengths, such as courage, future-mindedness, optimism, interpersonal skill, faith, work ethic, hope, honesty, perseverance, the capacity for flow and and insight, can act as buffers against mental illness. Research has demonstrated that learning optimism prevents depression and anxiety in children and adults (Seligman, 2002). “A teenager who is future-minded, who is interpersonally skilled, who derived flow from sports, is not at risk of substance abuse” (Seligman, 2002, p. 4). Positive psychology interventions promote superior functioning while traditional psychology attempts to restore a person to normal functioning (Biswas-Diener, 2010).
Only in recent years have psychologists begun to appreciate the benefits of happiness and positive emotion — benefits that include everything from enhanced creativity to improved immune-system function. Dr. Barbara Fredrickson at the University of North Carolina, a leader in the field of positive psychology, posed the question, “What good are positive emotions?” and came up with the following possibilities.
In my life time I have accomplished many extraordinary tasks that I’ve put my mind too. I discovered that my signature themes have greatly affected the methods that I use to complete these tasks. People use their strengths in everyday life as well as in crucial, life changing situations. Important self-building achievement is one factor that makes people who they are. Another is the way that people apply there strengths to different situations.
...ed and accepted. This is because not only does it aid those who are have mental illnesses but it is also designed for the betterment of society as a whole. Additionally, there are also medical treatments such as drugs for these kinds of mental diseases and although both have had successes both also have limitations. As drugs come with side effects, have high relapse possibilities and there are also dosage problems whereas, in positive psychology the debate over how happiness is measured in the first place is controversial. As a result, using past experiences like in ww2 psychologists have designed positive psychology so that it is helpful of all people in society and not only those in need of help. All in all, it can be said that although there are limitations to both of these fields under psychology both also have numerous success and benefit society as a whole.
