Effects of Reading Books
"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over a man who cannot read" Mark Twain. Half the population of planet earth only reads when forced to. They do not realize that reading books will not only expand their minds, but it will also grant them the opportunity to soar beyond the boundaries of our realm. Many people are blind to the positive changes reading can bring upon their lives. Expanding one's knowledge, improving analytic and critical thinking skills and providing a guaranteed stress free and entertaining experiences are few of the many effects reading has on oneself.
Reading books, whether fictional or non-fictional always adds to one's storage of knowledge. Some people may argue that some genres

Diving into a novel, makes one's burdens and concerns evaporate into thin air, leaving him to relish in the story. After finishing a book with a good plot, one finds himself free of all the anxiety and tension that once weighed down his shoulders, and he is revitalized and filled with euphoria. When reading a well written novel, people see the scenes all played out in their own minds with every meager detail included, every intake of breath, every smirk and even the tone in which the character said that particular line. It is surprising how a movie directed by one's imagination is so much better than an actual movie.
To conclude, reading in all its forms has numerous impacts on one's life, and it can transform his lifestyle completely. Reading enlarges the person's information and significantly strengthens his analytical and creative skills, which leads to prosperity and flourishing in his career. It can also dispel all the pressure and strain, and ensure an extremely relaxing and entertaining time. In addition to that, reading helps a person become a much better human. Reading is a truly mind blowing experience, that everyone should
Just because a person reads a lot of books doesn 't technically make that person a good reader. Richard Rodriguez clearly emphasizes this in his article The Lonely, Good Company of Books published in 1982 from The Hunger Of Memory: The Education Of Richard Rodriguez. As a child Richard did not like reading he saw "reading at best, as only a chore".(Rodriguez pg.227) Not truly understanding the pleasures and education he could gain from reading books.
In “The Lonely, Good Company of Books,” by Richard Rodriguez, you learn that Rodriguez had read hundreds of books before he was a teenager, but never truly understood what he was reading. His parents never encouraged him to read and thought the only time you needed to read, was for work. Since his parents never encouraged Rodriguez to read it effected how he perceived books.
I began to read not out of entertainment but out of curiosity, for in each new book I discovered an element of real life. It is possible that I will learn more about society through literature than I ever will through personal experience. Having lived a safe, relatively sheltered life for only seventeen years, I don’t have much to offer in regards to worldly wisdom. Reading has opened doors to situations I will never encounter myself, giving me a better understanding of others and their situations. Through books, I’ve escaped from slavery, been tried for murder, and lived through the Cambodian genocide. I’ve been an immigrant, permanently disabled, and faced World War II death camps. Without books, I would be a significantly more close-minded person. My perception of the world has been more significantly impacted by the experiences I've gained through literature than those I've gained
Reading has been going through a steady according to the article “Why Literature Matters”. Dana Gioia believes that the decline of reading in America will have a negative effect on society. He believes that there are many people that contributes to the decline of reading but mainly in the young adults ages 18-24. Dana also believes that with the steady decline of reading we can see a major change in our nation including, being less informed, active, and having the ability to have an independent mind. Dana Gioia states that “The most worrisome finding in the 2002 study [Survey of Public Participation in the Arts],however, is the declining percentage of Americans, especially young adults, reading literature.”
If you learn to read some of the harder and more challenging books in our public libraries, you will become more intelligent in the world. Learning to read is a valuable source to have and learn from, because if you can read and write you will be very intelligent.
The story “Nerd Alert: Reading is Good for Your Health” (Source: Jen Christiensen) is based on how reading can help you with your problems. They use the term “bibliotherapy” which means “book therapy “to explain their method. The ‘book whisperer’ Alison Kerr Courtney’s method is to give 5 to 7 different books based on her client’s moods, and the outcomes are positive! My view on this is that reading books that are based on how you feel are good because you can feel better and maybe even resolve the issue in a better way. According to Keith Oatley he claims “People who read more fiction may understand people better than others.” My response to this is that personally that fiction books help me relate to other people and their problems. ‘Reading
Mason Cooley says about reading “Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are .” Reading is like a journey you can take when you want to go somewhere. Everyone always wants to imagine they are in the journey with the character in the book. When the story is over the person that is reading never wants to leave the journey. Everyone starts a new journey when they open a new book to read. Sometimes people who read don’t have a journey with the character; they just want to read because they don’t have anything else to do. For me reading is really fun to do.
A debate has grown on whether reading is essential on making you a better person. The spark that started the fire was Gregory Currie’s article “Does Great Literature Makes Us Better?” which declares that the certainty that reading literature improves us as a people has “no compelling evidence that suggests that people are morally or socially better for reading Tolstoy”. In response to Currie’s claim Annie Murphy Paul weighed in with “Reading Makes Us Smarter and Nicer” where she states “in studies published in 2006 and 2009 that individuals who often read fiction appear to be better able to understand other people, empathize with them and view the world from their perspective”. Paul claims that “old fashioned reading from a book is more beneficial for our capacity for empathy and intellectual development than the superficial reading we do on the web scrolling through TMZ”, for example there are many benefits from reading a good book over reading an article just for entertainment.
Reading has changed me for the worse because there will always be times in my education that I know I will not get to choose what novel I read. The most important thing I have learned from reading is that it gives you a lot more knowledge. I have learned things from reading that I discovered to be true. For example, I have learned new words from reading by using context clues to determine what they meant, later to find out that I was correct.
According to Emanuele Castano Professor of Psychology, at The New School for Social Research in New York, if you read a lot of literary fiction it improves you understanding of human behavior. This because you spend a lot of time living vicariously through different characters. You are better placed to make decision based on your insight that will improve your interactions.
Reading leave me a lot of good things, such as learning what is going on around the
George R.R. Martin once said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only one.” For centuries, books have transformed readers into someone else and transported them to different worlds. In my fourteen years, I have fought dragons, saved the world, and survived World War II. I have become others who were anywhere from a toddler to an adult. I have gone to wizarding school and a summer camp for demigods all because of books. Something magical happens when I open bound pages of words and begin to read. Books inspire me because they each open up a new world of experiences and feelings that will last with me forever.
In the contemporary era, if you don’t have any desire or need for information, there will be no good future for you. Life is very much pre-determined. Books not only increase your intellect but also influence your reading and writing skills. Books can be read again and again as they are the most credible and precious media of mass communication.
Nowadays, many people think reading is not necessary, since there are so many sources of information and types of entertainment, such as TV, cinema and the Internet. I believe they are wrong because reading is very beneficial in many ways.
One positive element of reading is that it gives children the opportunity to develop their thoughts on books, which strengthens their cognitive development and encourages deeper thoughts.
