The time that I recall when I first began to read was when I was two years old. My mom started teaching me a lot before I went into kindergarten and it was really useful that she was a kindergarten teacher herself. The main types of readings I do are magazines, research articles, and when I get assigned to read a novel for a class. I would describe myself as a reader that once I start reading a book, I find myself not being able to stop because I want to know what will happen next. A moment that encapsulates who I am as a reader is when I read a novel that I chose for a class to do a book report on and found myself reading it for over an hour because I was in such suspense. Reading has changed me for the worse because there will always be times in my education that I know I will not get to choose what novel I read. The most important thing I have learned from reading is that it gives you a lot more knowledge. I have learned things from reading that I discovered to be true. For example, I have learned new words from reading by using context clues to determine what they meant, later to find out that I was correct. A moment of recognition that I have had growing into literacy was when I first started college. In college I realized that there was a lot of reading that had to be done in a short amount of time unlike high school. There are also a lot of book reports and essays that have to be done. Until I got into college, I have never completed a book report. I never realized that there was so much work that had to go into writing an essay or book report. There are so many steps, such as drafting and revising it repeatedly to get the grade you want. For me, reading as well as rereading, books such as Junie B Jones, Berenstain Bears, or the Harry Potter series, impacted my life immensely by increasing my vocabulary, developing my vital language skills and many more developmental skills. In the past, being literate meant beating kids in how many books I could read and being able to comprehend difficult vocabulary, but now being literate in the adult world means developing new and creative ideas or being able to prosper an opinion based on facts and previous knowledge.
Living in the Southern United States during eighteenth century was a difficult time for African-Americans. Majority of them were slaves who received manipulation, sexual abuse and brutally whips to the spin. They were treated this way in order to stop them from gaining hope, knowledge and understanding of the world. Some African Americans managed to obtain these qualities from books and use them to escape from slavery. Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist who wrote an autobiography, from which the excerpt "Learning to Read and Write" explains how he developed literacy. In the excerpt, an African American slave banned from learning to read and write, breaks the law in an attempt to free his mind from the restricted beliefs of his master. One significant idea portrayed from Douglass's ordeal is that reading and writing is a vital skill that benefits humanity.
My literacy journey began long before I had actually learned how to read or write. While recently going through baby pictures with my mother, we came across a photo of my father and I book shopping on the Logos boat, a boat that would come to my island every year that was filled with books for our purchasing. Upon looking at this picture, my mother was quite nostalgic and explained how they began my journey to literacy through experiences like this. Reading is seen as a simple task that a person learns at a young age. This is not true. In the Introduction to the book called “Ways of Reading” by David Bartholomae, Anthony Petrosky, and Stacey Waite explain that reading and writing is a complex process that may be difficult to understand. Two terms mentioned heavily in this book are reading against or with the grain. These being two complex terms when it comes down to reading. In most novels the author gives the reader the opportunity to agree or disagree with them. Reading with the grain is taking the author’s insight, while reading against the grain is not supporting the author’s view but your own. Growing up in working class family, my mom worked all the time for the living of a big family with five kids, and my dad was in re-education camp because of his association with U.S. government before 1975. My grandma was my primary guardian. “Go to study, go to read your books, read anything you like to read if you want to have a better life,” my grandma kept bouncing that phrase in my childhood. It becomes the sole rule for me to have better future. I become curious and wonder what the inside of reading and write can make my life difference. In my old days, there was no computer, no laptop, no phone…etc, to play or to spend time with, other than books. I had no other choice than read, and read and tended to dig deep in science books, math books, and chemistry books. I tended to interest in how the problem was solved. I even used my saving money to buy my own math books to read more problems and how to solve the problem. I remembered that I ended up reading the same math book as my seventh grade teacher. She used to throw the challenge questions on every quiz to pick out the brighter student. There was few students know how to solve those challenge questions. I was the one who fortunately nailed it every single time. My passion and my logic for reading and writing came to me through that experience, and also through my grandma and my mom who plant the seed in me, who want their kids to have happy and better life than they were. In my own dictionary, literacy is not just the ability to read and write, it is a strong foundation to build up the knowledge to have better life, to become who I am today.
I used to have to take these tests about all the books I would read in school and I would always ace them all. I knew that reading was something I liked because I was always very intrigued by it. Also in middle school I found my true writing voice. I remember taking a creative writing class in six grade and I was always the student who wrote more than what was expected for my writing assignments. I would write stories about things such as my friends and the experiences that I had in school. Sometimes I would even write my own plays and in my plays the characters would be people in family and people from school. I would always try to make the plot super interesting in my plays. One time I wrote a play about my brothers and me traveling to space and finding aliens. Overall, I really fell in love with literacy throughout my middle school years because I was able to read books more at an advance level and I also was able to write more intense stories. I also remember as young girl learning how to read and my favorite book that I could quote word for word was “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr.Suess. I loved that book so much I still have that today. As I got older my love for reading and books started to diminish, I went to a private school for my elementary years and their curriculum was very intense. It was required to read a book from their approved list and complete a book report each summer before the school year began. Not to mention the numerous books reports I would have to complete during the school. At an early age books and reading was something I had to do and not what I wanted to do.
If I had to chose the most important moment of my literacy development I would easily say it was my sophomore year of high school. I was in Honors World Literature class taught by high school teacher Amy Shaw. The second semester of the year we spent reading and discussing The Iliad. The way Mrs.Shaw taught this book and made us think about it combined with my love of Greek mythology gave me an immediate interest in this unit. However the many epics and epithets took away most of my enthusiasm. Later in the semester, we were each assigned a chapter, or “books” as they were called, to teach to the class. Our teachings had to include a summary of the events of the chapter as well as a list of literary devices used in the literature. My Literacy Experience Everyone’s first experience with literature goes all the way back to elementary school. In order to do anything successfully, a person must first master the basics. Reading and writing require that you first learn the alphabet, how to pronounce letters, and how to put those letters together to form words. As a child I struggled with these basics, and so that discouraged me to the point of where I did not even want to try. If it was not for my grandmother, parents, and the realization that not being able to read will lead to failure, I would not enjoy literature as much as I do today.
Every year of my life, marks a year of accomplishment in literacy. This can be seen through my progression within school. The numerous exams I passed would not have been accomplished if I could not coherently write about the knowledge, and opinions I had formed growing up. These answers became the grades I needed to gain entry to university. I am very thankful to my parents for having the foresight and awareness to teach me from an early age how to read and write.
Reading was never something I fussed about growing up. As a child, I loved genres of realistic fiction. I was hooked on The New Adventures of Mary Kate and Ashley, Goosebumps, The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes, Judy Moody, and especially, Zoobooks and Highlights magazines. My mother was always ready to help build my reading and writing skills. She took me to the library constantly to feed my passion for books and knowledge. I loved exploring the shelfs, organizing the books, and filling up my library cart. I tried keeping a diary in elementary school to keep track of my outings with my parents and grandparents to museums, zoos, movies, and libraries. The first time I began reading was when I was in first grade. But the first time I actually enjoyed reading books was when I was in middle school. In sixth and seventh grade, I started to read more books than I did before, but I did not take pleasure in it as much and just read because it was mandatory to read a certain amount and type of books for classes. It was between the end of eighth grade and the beginning of the summer was I really started to enjoy reading books. From then on, my interest in reading increased dramatically beginning high school and up until now, in college, I still love reading books.
During the last decade, the process of second or foreign language learning is necessary, because someone can communicate to others. It means that language is a tool to transfer information and messages and expressing attitudes and emotions. Moreover, English as an international language plays a important role in politics, culture, and education. According to these reasons, learning language as a second or foreign language is a complex process (Tilemma, 2000). In order to be a competent learner, it is necessary to be capable in four basic skills which are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Also, reading is one of the most central skill in learning a language and is chosen to be studied in the present research.
I assume what made me enjoy literacy even more, was joining my school's creative writing UIL (University Interscholastic League). I remember it was actually one of my friends suggesting for me to try out. At that time I was against the idea completely since I have great fear of being judged from my work. But, after thinking it over many nights I decided to take the chance. I was so nervous when the try-out day came.
