Poor Delivery-UPS Introduction UPS, United Parcel Service, is the worlds largest delivery company for packages. There is a lot of logistics and supply chain management that goes into the day-to-day functions of UPS that one would not normally think of. I personally did not. However when I had a poor experience with UPS recently and found myself in the actual UPS store wanting to pull my hair out because of how not implementing technology could hurt a business. I realized just how complicated the delivery process is for them. I was waiting to receive a very important package, one that I absolutely had to have that day and it needed to be signed for, so I could not leave the house in case it would be delivered. I waited for eight hours for my package, calling twice to see if I could get an estimated delivery time. The women on the other end of the line told me that she was unable to do that. By the end of the day I did not have my package and the trucks were all back in from delivery. I went to the UPS warehouse store, located here in Kearney to get my package. When I told the women working my name and package, explaining the size it most likely was and other …show more content…
Depending on the business the employees may not have a very extensive knowledge of technology this could lead to a time sink. A time sink is when time is taken away from the customer. This leads to the customer getting upset and potentially taking their service elsewhere where they feel as if their time is valued. The employees at the Kearney UPS store need to know how to use barcodes and the computer system to make the customer experience effortless and quick each time. Also when the customer is looking for something of great importance and they employee helping them cannot find it and is looking all over the customer begins to feel worried and upset. They also lose trust that the business cares about what is important to them, their
Furthermore, this was kind of funny, because as a kid I was amazed at how Amazon ships customers’ packages in the fastest and the most cost-effective way. As a kid, I remember asking my parents “How does Amazon do this?” and I remember them saying that I will need to major in a topic that will help me understand this process. Every time I ordered an item from them, I would think about the process of obtaining the packages using robots, packing the items safely, and then shipping them off to customers. This is an example of logistics and efficiency at its finest. As a junior, I still do not understand this process fully, since I am currently taking IDIS 240. But, by the time I graduate, I hope to fully understand this process.
Business depends very critically upon Fed Ex. If Fed Ex had a major disruption to their delivery system, flowers would not be delivered on time, resulting in dissatisfied customers. For example, if Fed Ex employees went on strike, there would be no alternative equivalent to Fed Ex to deliver flowers to customers. UPS, although an alternative, did not deliver perishable products in the same timely fashion as Fed Ex.
The Competitive Forces are: The biggest competitor is Fed Ex, and they cannot compare. UPS did 2.5 times the volume through its sophisticated delivery machine.

As technology advances jobs, and the employment rate decrease due to the use of computerized equipment. Computers are now able to complete task that otherwise would be done by employers. An example would be the shutdown of a corporation know as Toys R Us. Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy. Toys R Us will be open for the holiday season, but as soon as the holiday season is over, they will be shutting down. This will affect millions, the current employees who depend on their income, will be struggle for awhile. So basically people are losing jobs, which means they are losing their income. Toys R Us also said that in the future they would like to reopen smaller stores, as part of their long term plan. (Verdon, Joan. “Toys R Us Store Closings Expected after the Holiday
After each order is made the product is either picked from the store or ordered from one of the central hubs. If a product is ordered from a hub an employee needs to track down the part, count out the correct amount of pieces, and ship the product. Once the product is shipped to the store employees need to receive in the parts and then deliver them to the customer. Behind every part bought there is an extensive amount of labor time put into getting that product to the customer. Not only do the companies need to have labor to produce and distribute products they need high end technology to develop and distribute their

50 location that day and she had not received her resources in the mail. Before work each day we would open a box, located in the back of Walmart. Inside this box, would be marketing materials, napkins, condiments and sometimes the actual product being sampled that day. These boxes were required to be used during a demonstration. As I went to speak, the phone disconnected. I wanted to verify if Victoria could do my demonstration in place of her own, as her box was unavailable and she would be out a day of work. An immediate attempt to call her back was made, with no successful response. After 5 minutes passed, I tried to call a second time, with the same result. At this point I had to make a
Cost cutting; Technology plays a significant part in package delivery companies capability to assist customers in cutting their inventories which UPS owns. The UPS system processes packages using advanced information technology and are transported by the companies’ own aircraft, fleet or delivery vehicle so UPS does not rely on other companies.

In order to perform at the highest level, an employee must be motivated and have a strong combination of declarative and procedural knowledge. If an employee significantly lacks any of these performance determinants, the manager must address the issue through the most appropriate performance management approach. In the case presented, Heather’s declarative knowledge has been clearly presented. However, her ability to interact successfully with students both during and after class may indicate a lack of procedural knowledge and the possibility of a motivation problem. With the right behavior approach to performance measurement, Heather’s manager could capitalize on her strong declarative knowledge,

Technology can displace numerous examples of workers in service industries. Shop fronts such as banking, real estate, travel and many more, are disappearing. Small retail food outlets continue to collapse, with the growing supermarkets and food chains organized around computer technology, and on- line shopping from home. An even completely automated home-computerized service such as a hardware and software package called “Jeeves” is now available. Business management and company directors are finding voice activated lap top computer secretaries far more reliable and efficient than the human
Keeping up with technology is difficult, tiresome, and firms find it very costly to keep at pace with it. Technology rapidly and constantly keeps on changing. Being at par technologically requires extensive research and strategic analysis of acquiring new innovation. Enforcing new technology requires staff retraining and in some cases making employees redundant.
