As a Product Demonstration Team Lead for Crossmark, my duties included supervising 3-4 other Product Demonstrators assigned to the Walmart store located off Rt. 50 in Winchester, VA. I would coordinate with the management of this location, each day, to reach agreement on where each Demonstrator would best be placed for their different demonstrations.
It was a Saturday when I was on my way to work and received a call from my Manager at Crossmark. She stated that there was no Team Lead assigned at the new Walmart location in Stephens City, VA. She then requested I change my route to meet the management of this new location and ensure the grand opening demonstration was a success. The importance of this demonstration was expressed as greater than the one I was originally assigned, so I altered my route to head towards the Stephens City Walmart.

Though I had some strong points in my informative speech, I still feel there was a lot I could improve upon. I could not recognize any vocalized pauses but I noticed that at certain points of speech where I would transition from one point to another, I would push my glasses up. I don’t remember if this was because my glasses were actually slipping down or because I was nervous. Also, after watching my video, I found that in the beginning of the speech I was swaying a lot, but because I was standing behind the table it wasn’t that noticeable. As I sat in the boiling hot sun, the heat that had overwhelmed me throughout the day surpassed. I was engulfed by Lu Paul, a native Hawaiian advocate who was telling me the story of how Native Hawaiians loss their rights. “How did my people become a minority in their own land?” he asked me inquisitively. I found myself making many connections with this man’s story and my own. As he answered my questions about inequality in his community, he began to speak of many things that I had witnessed in my life, that I thought only my own culture experienced. “My people need to fight for equal education, language rights, and employment”, he stated firmly. It was in this moment I began to broaden my perspective of inequality and minority rights. This along with the many other field experiences I had during my semester abroad, help shape my desire to attend law school and work both nationally and abroad in civil and human rights.

There were only two warehouses that were nearly 500 kilometres away from Wal-Mart’s stores. Also the physical distance between the headquarters was too large to overcome. C & C Grocery’s initial organizational structure operated under a vertical linkage. Vertical linkage is utilized to “coordinate activities between the top and bottom of an organization and are designed primarily for control of the organization” (Daft,2013) Store managers were responsible for the grocery line, front-end department and general store operations but had little knowledge about merchandising, meat and produce. Instead, their duties included cleanliness of store, employee appearance, and sufficient checkout service and price accuracy. Store managers wanted to be trained in management skills to allow them opportunity for promotion to higher positions of district and regional management. With the original structure, store managers operation activities actually prevented them from learning these skills, such as merchandising. Frustration ran high with the store managers as the district store supervisors only focused store visits to assure that company operating standards were being practices, instead of training store managers to run their stores more efficiently. The decision to have a district specialist in grocery, meat and produce created an uneven hierarchy as the meat and produce managers reported to their specialist not the store manager. This created tension in the work environment as these departments acted independently and uninterested in the other departments. This structure in general contributed to poor communication, lack of priority for employee development and employee dissatisfaction which in turn lead to poor performance in the chain.
According to the scenario, Jacob and Krystal worked in an ad agency that started five years ago in Topeka, Kansas. The ad agency was barely making a profit and needed a large client, which led the agency to put in a bid for a city government contract. Due to Jacob’s son being sick, he was preoccupied with taking care of his son and left Krystal with most of the work. Krystal prepared the presentation and met with Jacob the day before the final meeting with the client.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. Well, this was my time to decide which would happen. I guess you could say that I revolved around softball my whole life, and usually I put my heart and soul into the game. Today was different. Ever since I was little I’ve been what you would call a “high achieving” kid. I did well in school, I did well in sports and I did well in my community. I was always the first one to class, and the last one to leave the field. I was the kid that all my friends’ parents compared their children to. I was the kid with a room full of trophies and awards. In my mind, the worst possible thing I could do was disappoint the people around me. In elementary school I was involved in every club imaginable. I was in the band, I played in the orchestra, I sang solos for chorus, I was in the math club, I was president of student council, I played travel soccer, I was involved in every activity possible, and I excelled in all of them.
