STATIC presents as a psychological thriller with a lot of promise. The goal is clear and the stakes are high. The structure utilizes some of the techniques that make for a compelling thriller, including a contained setting (the duplex), unexplained noises, tease attacks, a creepy TV show, and the sense that someone is stalking and watching.

The tone is ominous and foreboding fitting with the story type. There are smart story choices like the discovery of the hidden tunnel and the idea of the unnerving puppet show.

The idea of the couple moving into a new home is a tried and true event for this type of plot. The first act sets up the ordinary world of the protagonist, Curtis, and his girlfriendGray. There’s a solid pivotal plot point when Curtis watches the Pogo show and has the …show more content…

Right now it opens almost like a romantic comedy with Curtis practicing how to propose to Gray. Normally, a thriller should open with a darker scene that establishes the genre.

Moreover, the main concern about the presentation is the pace and the lack of compelling tension. The pace feels slow because the events are not captivating enough until late in the script. In examining the tension, there’s a fascinating scene when Curtis first watches the Pogo Show. However, he doesn’t seem to be all that concerned about it. The show should be a very compelling inciting event that drives Curtis to become curious and proactive about investigating the show. Instead, his lack of genuine concern makes the scene feel as if it’s not the inciting event. The Pogo show becomes sporadic and almost forgotten.

It would have been more effective if Curtis were more proactive in trying to figure out what the Pogo show is and where it’s being broadcast from, especially given what he sees with the girl. This would have focused the plot more and given Curtis an objective. It also would have enhanced the
