Silence of the Lambs can be placed within many genres. One of which is the “Thriller” genre. A huge contribution to why Silence of the Lambs is a thriller film is the character of deranged genius Hannibal Lecter. Played by Anthony Hopkins whom won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance, Lecter holds the key to the case Detective Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster whom also won the Academy Award for Best Actress, is determined to solve. With such a situation, interrogation is essential as many other films within the thriller subgenre of Crime Thriller also show. By comparing Clarice Starling’s behavior within the interrogation setting to other detectives and women of thriller films, it is revealed that although Lecter may captivate the audience as well as Starling herself, it is Starling that makes the film so interesting in all of its genre-bending glory.
“Thriller” is a film, literary, and television genre that contains elements of suspense, anxiety and excitement. Within the thriller genre, there are multiple subgenres such as the mystery thriller, crime thriller, horror thriller, erotic thriller, psychological thriller, and the list still grows today. Many thriller films contain elements from multiple subgenres, which in turn helps to create the core elements with more potency and variety. Silence of the Lambs is undoubtedly within the thriller genre and moreover can be placed into several of its numerous subgenres. However, there are two thriller subgenres that Silence fits into like a perfectly tailored suit of human skin: crime thriller and psychological thriller.

What can be acknowledged is that the character of the female within the thriller genre need not masculinize or sexualize herself to be a success.
Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs is an illustration of an interesting character that is entirely believable within the thriller genre. Author Yvonne Tasker claims that when comparing Silence to other thrillers such as Manhunter or Se7en, “only Silence full mobilizes the compelling figure of the female investigator”. Tasker goes on to celebrate the character of Starling for her paradox: both “ordinary” and “extraordinary”, “gifted” and “inexperienced”, “poor” but “stunning” (Tasker 24-25).
The first example of mystery elements in “Lamb to the Slaughter” is dramatic irony. Housewife Mary Maloney is startled by her husband’s bad mood and shocking news, so she turns into a murderer by killing her husband with a frozen lamb leg. She begins cooking the weapon, goes to the store to buy vegetables which creates an alibi. She comes home to call the police who bombard her with questions as she pleads her innocence. Later, at the end of the story, Mary Maloney served the lamb leg she used to kill Patrick to the police officers and they are personally disposing of the weapon and simultaneously trying to find it. This adds suspense because the reader knows that the lamb is the murder weapon but the police do not, leaving the reader unsure if the police will discover the truth about the meal they are eating. The second mystery element that adds suspense in “Lamb to the Slaughter” is inference gaps. At this point in the story, Patrick just returned home from work and is about to explain why he cannot go out to dinner and his depressed mood. After much confusing behavior from Patrick, “And he told her. It didn’t take long, four or five minutes at most, and she sat very still through it all, watching him with a kind of dazed horror”(Dahl 113). This adds suspense because the reader is not directly told what the news is and so their mind is left spinning,
Film Noir, as Paul Schrader integrates in his essay ‘Notes on Film Noir,’ reflects a marked phase in the history of films denoting a peculiar style observed during that period. More specifically, Film Noir is defined by intricate qualities like tone and mood, rather than generic compositions, settings and presentation. Just as ‘genre’ categorizes films on the basis of common occurrences of iconographic elements in a certain way, ‘style’ acts as the paradox that exemplifies the generality and singularity at the same time, in Film Noir, through the notion of morality. The analysis showed that Shirley’s and Thomas’s work matched in a way that both the stories reflect identity crises and the psyche of a killer. The notable use of typical fictional horror elements such as tragic backstories, harbingers, unseen forces causing chaos and dreadfulness, terror and above all unrealistically portrayed personality disorders makes the stories a baroque blend of supernatural fantasy and moral reality.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is a thrilling film filled with mystery and suspense. However, Hitchcock left many unsolved issues at the end of this film. In contrast, when comparing Vertigo to more recent films of similar genre’, mysteries are usually always solved and thoroughly explained by the end of the film. Ironically, Hitchcock’s failure to explain everything to the audience in Vertigo is one of the film’s best attributes. This lack of knowledge allows the viewer to use their own imagination and speculate as to what might or might not have become of certain characters.
The level and degree to which the audience, in horror, being persuaded, constantly shifts around, but the message stays consistent. For example, in the novel, Silence of the Lambs (Thomas Harris), brings a “paradoxical” tone to your understanding of Hannibal Lecter; while, you are quite disgusted with the crimes he has committed, you are at the same time, quite intrigued by the wit and sophistication of the “monster;” humanizing him. However, James Whale, takes a different approach in the horror film, The Bride of Frankenstein. James Whale, a prisoner of war during World War One, coaxes us to feel sympathy for the monster through the outward and internal entorturement of the monsters isolation due to it’s appearance. These movies allowed female characters to embody all the contradictions that could make them a woman. They were portrayed as the “femme fatale” and also “mother,” the “seductress” and at the same time the “saint,” (Newsom, 2011). Female characters were multi-faceted during this time and had much more complexity and interesting qualities than in the movies we watch today. Today, only 16% of protagonists in movies are female, and the portrayal of these women is one of sexualization and dependence rather than complexity (Newsom, 2011).

Suspense is a 1913 film that portrays the story of a tramp intruding into a family’s home, where a mother takes care of her child while her husband is away. The plot is a common one that had been used previous times before the film’s release, such as in The Lonely Villa (1909). However, through taking advantage of the single frame shot, the filmmakers were able to create a masterful aesthetic of two separate stories that turn a basic plot into a complex story. The film created an inventive way of illustrating stories within cinema by allowing the audience the chance to consume more narrative in less time within just one take.
The genre of horror films is one that is vast and continually growing. So many different elements have been known to appear in horror films that it is often times difficult to define what is explicitly a horror film and what is not. Due to this ambiguous definition of horror the genre is often times divided into subgenres. Each subgenre of horror has a more readily identifiable list of classifications that make it easier to cast a film to a subgenre, rather than the entire horror genre. One such subgenre that is particularly interesting is that of the stalker film. The stalker film can be categorized as a member of the horror genre in two ways. First, the stalker film can be identified within the horror genre due to its connection with the easily recognizable subgenre of horror, the slasher film. Though many elements of the stalker film differ from those of the slasher film, the use of non-mechanical weapons and obvious sexual plot points can be used to categorize the stalker film as a subgenre of the slasher film. Secondly, the stalker film can be considered a member of the horror genre using Robin Wood’s discussion regarding horror as that which society represses. Lastly, the film the Silence of the Lambs has a symptomatic meaning. It reflects the theme of how women in the workplace in our modern society are accurately portrayed, and how even though Clarice was a great fit for an FBI agent, she was always put off to the side and talked down to. Overall, even though I am not a big fan of thrillers like this, I definitely enjoyed watching and depicting the film, as it was a film that displayed accurate examples and themes how a women in a man’s world is most likely
Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo is a film which functions on multiple levels simultaneously. On a literal level it is a mystery-suspense story of a man hoodwinked into acting as an accomplice in a murder, his discovery of the hoax, and the unraveling of the threads of the murder plot. On a psychological level the film traces the twisted, circuitous routes of a psyche burdened down with guilt, desperately searching for an object on which to concentrate its repressed energy. Finally, on an allegorical or figurative level, it is a retelling of the immemorial tale of a man who has lost his love to death and in hope of redeeming her descends into the underworld.
Both The Silence of the Lambs and Seven are considered to be more psychological in nature, as they present killers whose motivations are explainable. The unexplainable is infinitely more terrifying than the explainable so in elucidating the motivations to their gruesome behavior the audience is given an easy out. Believing that evil has a root cause, the audience does not have to accept the shocking hypothesis that evil can simply exist without rhyme or reason. Even in the masterpiece Halloween (1978) we are tossed a half-hearted psychological explanation as to why Michael Myers does what he does. The psychobabble that Donald Pleasance spouts is simply that Myers is "pure evil," and there are some vague connections made between Myers witnessing his sister engaging in premarital sexual activity and his slaughtering tendencies.
Would you rather be horrified beyond repair or thrilled to the point of no return? In horror, the main purpose is to invoke fear and dread into the audience in the most unrealistic way. Horror movies involve supernatural entities such as ghosts, vampires, teleportation, and being completely immortal. As thriller films are grounded in realism and involve more suspense, mystery, and a sense of panic. Though both genres will frighten the audience, it will happen in two different ways. Whether the horror thrills or the thriller horrifies, a scare is always incorporated.
