In Susan Glickman’s “Poem About your Laugh”, she uses figurative imagery to express how obnoxious someone’s laughter is. She does this through using metaphors to emphasize how irritating, loud, and endless the person in question’s laughter is. In the first stanza, Glickman represents the laughter with “unsynchronized clocks” and agitated “blind kittens” (Glickman), both generally considered displeasing sounds. In doing so, Glickman artfully convey her displeasure with the laughter without outright stating it. Additionally, the use of imagery within the metaphors allows the reader to picture these irritating sounds, strengthening the message of how obnoxious the laugh is.
