The popular American Poet, Billy Collins, is playing a significant role in the evolution of poetry. His writing style evokes an array of emotions for the reader. Every stanza in his poetry passes the satirical standard that he generated for himself over his career. Collins swiftly captivates his readers through his diverse use of figurative language. More specifically, his use of vivid imagery paired with humorous personification and extended metaphors create his unique style of satirical poetry. This developed form of writing appeals to a large crowd of people because the generally accessible topics that he discusses are fairly easy to resonate for the common man. However, his poetry offers an interesting perspective on what otherwise would be simplistic ideas. The main themes and concepts that are being presented in each of his writings are revered and coveted by the general population. An appealing aspect of his writing is his ability to directly convey the main idea within the poem. As a result, the reader can understand the meaning of his work with ease. The typical beginning of his work gives the reader a slight taste of what is to come. Billy Collins’ unique writing style and various trademarks directly influenced by his ability to propagate an array of emotions for the reader, his humorous tone, and the accessibility of the topics he describes within his poetry. The literary journey that Collins takes his readers when they read his poetry instills an assortment of powerful emotions. While acting as the poet laureate for the United States of America in 2001, he was asked by congress to write a poem recognizing the attacks on 9/11. The name of the poem is called “The Names” and it provokes a sense patriotism, sadness, a... ... middle of paper ... ... think 'accessible' just means that the reader can walk into the poem without difficulty,” he said. “But the real question is what happens to the reader once he or she gets inside the poem.” (pg 454) . In the poem The Lanyard, Collins discusses the impossibility of fully repaying mother figure for all of their sacrifices by writing, “She nursed me in many a sick room/lifted teaspoons of medicine to my lips/set cold facecloths on my forehead/then led me out into the airy light/and taught me to walk and swim and I in turn presented her with a lanyard./"Here are thousands of meals" she said,/"and here is clothing and a good education."/"And here is your lanyard," I replied,/"which I made with a little help from a counselor." Collins uses imagery to depict an image within the readers minds in order to get them emotionally attached to this piece of work. Collin starts off in the first stanza describing the night like a peaceful breeze. He then calmly observes the raindrops dripping slow down his windows until they disappear in “a soft rain stole in, unhelped by any breeze” (2-3). He then saw this silver glaze on the windows and at this moment he started naming the last names of victims from the 9/11 events. As the list gets up to the letter E for Eberling he stops as the names fall into place as the “droplets fell through the dark” (7). Collins creates this great picture when he states “names printed on the ceiling of the night Names slipping around o a watery bend.

Bill Collins is a very well-known and popular poet. He has written over fifty poems in his career. He was born in New York and later became a professor at a university in New York and other universities. While reading our text, Literature to Go, I found the explanations which the poet provided after the poems to be very fascinating. They provided great insight and perspective on the poets thoughts, the poems meaning and the writing process of his poems

Some readers may define the tone as anger in James Stephen's "A Glass of Beer." Others may even say that it leaves an unpleasant tone. By studying the choice of words that Stephen uses to convey the tone of his scene, I will demonstrate that beneath the seemingly outraged situation of the poem lies something funnier. The true tone of "A Glass of Beer" is a sardonic one.
The Lanyard written by Billing Collins underlines the childhood of the author and with the help of literary devices such as repetition which puts the emphasis on ideology of quantity versus quality. Collins is also making use of time and flashbacks to compare and contrast the adulthood and childhood and realizing how much he could have done and how much he did. The poem talks about the Collins’s childhood and how his mother would always take care of him, give him everything she could and in return she got the lanyard. No matter what his mother did for him, he will always give her the lanyard which he made with help from counselor as he says in humorous tone, “…and here is your lanyard, I replied, which I made with a little help from a counselor”(stanza 5).

Collins uses visualization, emotions, and comparisons within several natural and man-made objects in respect to all the victims that tragically passed away that dreadful day. By specifically identifying several individuals in this poem, Collins found a way to honor those people that died on September 11, 2001.
In Billy Collins’s poem Introduction to Poetry, he displays his opinion regarding how poetry should be taught versus how it is currently taught.
