Plainchant, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic music have a great deal of similarities with modern music, sharing musical concepts including rhythm, dynamics, tone color, texture, and form; these similarities can be observed through a comprehensive analysis of each era and the genres it has influenced. Although these forms of pre-20th century music are not intentionally observed, they still play a subtle role in the music field. They are a vital part of the past and, simultaneously, the present; a dominant force in one and a fine thread in the other. In these varieties of approaches to music is found a bond between history, the contemporary, and the art of composition.
Plainchant, also known as Gregorian chant, is seen in a variety of styles

Plainchants were used as the prime songs of worship in the Catholic church; therefore, the use of plainchant is usually associated with religion, spirituality, and devotion. When combined with modern music, plainchant is usually meant to evoke these themes. The Second Coming commercial uses plainchant to make a comparison with the Second of Coming of Christ with the rise of a new brand of shoes for athletes. This commercial was one of the first of a series of Nike, Adidas, and other famous shoe brands commercials that would make use of plainchant. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's Wings uses plainchant to provide a clearer message of the songs criticism of the culture behind shoes. The very theme that basketball commercials had been using for years was now being used against them; what once stood for a new beginning, now symbolized a preposterous, almost religious, obsession with brands of shoes. The dedication to these shoes that rings through the children's voices is so evident through the words that it mimics the sacredness of the plainchant to the church centuries ago. "I wanna fly can you take me far away, give me a star to reach for, tell me what it takes and I'll go so high. I'll go so high my feet …show more content…
This period can be credited for aiding in the creation of numerous modern genres. During the Renaissance period, a lot of music became secular and mixed a lot of the techniques from sacred hymns, exemplifying the church's loss of control on society as the bourgeoisie rose in power. Therefore, any music that's not associated with the church derives some influence from Renaissance music. A capella groups came to existence for this very reason; plainchant's unaccompanied sound was added to secular music. In addition, any polyphonic song originated, in part, from the Renaissance period, since this was the era when polyphonic texture was
Everyone wants to be on top of the world and have the opportunity to have it all, but not everyone will work for it. Under Armor’s brilliant commercial does a great job of getting their message to young, aspiring athletes all over the world. Their commercial starts with a young boy in the middle of a field listening to the ground. The narrator, famous Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, is whispering “footsteps” and the boy is listening to them. As he listens, the commercial goes on with the showing of various athletes training such as Cam Newton, Tom Brady, and a few crossfit champions. Throughout the commercial the viewer can see how hard they are training using different kinds of under armor training shoes. The commercial then wraps
The Nike commercial is set in black and white throughout the scenes, the statement “you’re not supposed to be here” is continually being said. The music sounds like preachers from a church who are meant to uplift their audience and bring hope which fits the tone perfectly. Each scene builds up to LeBron James shooting his jump shot move that he ultimately became famous for and afterword’s joined the NBA. In some scenes, you can hear the actors speaking in an aggressive tone, there is a scene where a coach for the boys’ basketball team is giving them a pep talk and you can see he is upset or yelling so loud that you can see a gleam of spit shoot out of the coach’s mouth. The boy’s faces are concentrated and focused on what he is saying. A different example would be from another scene a girls’ team Is playing and one has the ball she passes it to another team member and the person she passes to doesn’t make it in the net. You see a girl scream, “ just shoot the ball” and the other girls face just looks
Michael Jordan has star power that bridges age, race, and socioeconomic class. Nike understands this aspect of the popular superstar and decided to give him his own clothing line named Jumpman23. It is the most popular form of sports apparel available and the white logo that adorns each article of apparel is known worldwide. Michael Jordan is arguably the most loved and respected athlete of this generation, thus the ad for this company depicted in ESPN The Magazine takes advantage of his immense popularity. In an attempt to expand the companies influence Jumpman23 uses professional baseball player Derrick Jeter to send its message and promote its apparel. In the essay “Absolution for Sale,” Charity Miller writes, “We live in a world of images. Among the most persuasive and insistent of these images are those directed at us by advertising. These images often do more then simply try to persuade us to buy a particular product or use a particular service. More subtly, they influence us by appealing to our desires or exploiting our emotions.” The image of Jeter training alone in a gym clothed head to toe in Michael Jordan’s clothing line combine with a poem above describing his intentions. This scene portrays the hard work and dedication that will eventually lead to success as things an athlete of any level should expect while wearing the clothing. Michael Jordan takes advantage of his legend on the basketball court and his appeal worldwide to create a line of apparel that demands the same work ethic from those who wear it. Its success is in Jumpman23’s ability to interest buyers no matter what age, race, or sport.
The music is vocal instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony and expression of emotion. The most famous music during the Renaissance is Jazz and some Rock and Roll instruments are very important during that time too it’s still important till this day. The three people I decide to tell you about are Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, and the last person I really enjoyed learning about was Louis Armstrong.
...on music that have continued to thrive in American music. The English Renaissance had made a drastic effect on modern day spiritual, secular, and instrumental music.
The developmental stages of a successful campaign help to establish the product in the audience’s mind or consciousness. The stages of the Nike campaign can be described by using the Yale Five-Stage Developmental Model. Yale researchers developed this model while observing the growth of national identity. The first stage of this model is identification. Our text states that “Many products and causes develop a graphic symbol or logotype to create identification in the audience’s mind” (p. 264, Larson). The logo Nike is most famous for is “The Swoosh.” This is the term given to the symbol of winged victory that appears on Nike products. “The design of the swoosh logo was inspired by the wing from the Greek goddess Nike” (p. 3, http://shrike.depaul.edu /~mcoscino/word.html). The Nike logo’s presence can be noted in almost every aspect of the athletic world.
The Renaissance period of history occurred during the 15th and 16th centuries. Renaissance in its basic definition means rebirth. According to Merriam Webster, renaissance formally means, “a movement or period of vigorous artistic and intellectual activity” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary). Renaissance is the title given to the period of great change in music and art. The Renaissance period ushered in a culture of music that the public could enjoy. Most importantly it was a period that encouraged musicians and composers to create music and take risks with voices, instruments and notes.
Everything in the Renaissance period was reborn after the long period of the dark middle ages. During the middle ages most things were static there was not a lot going on in the forms of literature and art. From the word of ancient Rome and
...ike today. The period between the baroque and renaissance paved a new way for not only music, but for art. The change that took place was gorgeous causing art to become so vivid and images are portrayed to be so real. I never was a fan of art nor music, but if one actually pays attention to the evolvement of it throughout time one would have great appreciation.
Music throughout the ages has changed dramatically. Starting in the Medieval period, from 400-1475, music was in the form of what is called the Gregorian chant. Instruments were very rarely used at this time. Since songs during this period were either troubadour or trouvere these chants had no real harmony. One example of this type of medieval composition is “Viderunt Omnes” by Leoninus. Like most Gregorian chants the texture of this piece is monophonic and polyphonic. “Viderunt Omnes” is a typical Gregorian chant in that it uses diatonic, not chromatic notes of the scale. Musical compositions during the Medieval period was made mostly by members of the church for the church. It was and is a very slow and steady movement that was meant to create a feeling of peace for worship purposes.
The Renaissance time period took place during the 14th and the 16th centuries it began in Europe. The Renaissance was a time of art, open ideas, and new beginnings. Before this time there was the Middle Ages. Then it was not a good time at all, it was full of sickness, disease, death, and the plague it killed almost half of Europe’s population. After the plague slowly decreased the population in Europe started to grow. Lots of new things started to happen. Like Bankers Merchants, and Tradespeople had a new market for their services. People became wealthier and had more money to spend. People began to build much bigger houses and buy more expensive clothes and people became more interested in the art and liturature. People began to learn foreign languages, they read more, played instruments, and finding more that interested them.
The film Hoop Dreams uses the notion of transcendence to sell the story of the characters, Arthur and William. The protagonists begin with their backs against the wall to eventually reach their life changing dream of the National Basketball Association (Abdel-Shehid & Kalman-Lamb, 111). Bell hooks interprets this transcendence as something more akin to shielding viewers from the reality and weight of the protagonists’ situation. This shield allows the viewers to simply root for William Gates and Arthur Agee instead of coming face-to-face with the real socio-cultural issues of the setting (117).
For the past twenty-five years, we have seen one of the most popular brand sayings become a part of our daily life. Nike started its “Just Do It” campaign in 1988 with the simple commercial advertisement of an 80-year-old man, Walt Stack, who runs seventeen miles each morning. This campaign is said to be one of the simplest slogans, but yet one of the most effective ones. While athletic apparel companies are struggling to captivate the attention of potential buyers, Nike has influenced the minds of its consumers with three simple words. As a consumer, we are persuaded though this campaign by several high-profile athletes throughout the years such as, Ken Griffey Jr. and Michael Jordan in the 90’s to Tiger Woods and the Williams sisters in the 2000’s. After too many celebrity scandals, Nike decided to campaign their “Just Do It” ads with everyday athletes. The media has interpreted the ‘Just Do It’ ads in many different forms, but mainly contributing a negative connotation with the athletes Nike selects and their irresponsible behavior. Ethically, this advertisement has been provided a confidence boost to a younger generation. Whether it was bad or good, this has been the outcome from this campaign.
This era is recognized by the creation of tonality, as well as the establishment of the opera, cantata, and concerto. Different from the classical era, this era featured a unity of mood, a continuous rhythm and melody, and a predominantly polyphonic texture, meaning that there were two melody lines, each fighting for the listener 's attention. The composers from the Baroque period were well-known for their extravagant, frivolous and bizarre usage of their instruments and their performances. The most notable influence from this era is in modern music especially rock music, because in rock music emotions are intense and the mood are usually unified just like the music from the Baroque period. Some artists and rock bands have adopted this bizarre style, for example Prince and Lady Gaga. Many rock bands were inspired by composers of this era such as Bach because of the intensity of his
The greatest obstacle for the integration of Renaissance music in film, is that it would have to be used very specifically. A majority of music from the Renaissance would be sung or played by either a brass or plucked instrument. This difference in instrumentation, let alone the difference in style, is arguably the main reason that Renaissance music is not used in film. The use is simply too specific, and an atmosphere that would be created by using Renaissance music, which is to say ethereal and light due to the use of polyphony, could just as easily be recreated with modern techniques and modern instrumentation.
