The Renaissance was a cultural and intellectual movement that had its peak during the 15th and 16th centuries. During these times there was a heightened interest with the classical learning that was brought about in the middle ages. The renaissance first started in Italy and then eventually spread to Western Europe. During this period there was a high interest in the aesthetics of the classical world like architecture. The renaissance focused on the 17th century philosophy which came from the Greeks. Everything in the Renaissance period was reborn after the long period of the dark middle ages. During the middle ages most things were static there was not a lot going on in the forms of literature and art. From the word of ancient Rome and
Greece came their literature learning and most importantly politics. Once the fall of Constantinople happened; many Greek scholars brought Greek manuscripts in ancient Greek, which had fallen into obscurity in the west. The scholars were able to focus on these literary and historical texts. Since the renaissance literally means rebirth there was a jolt of interest in classical scholarships and values. The men of Western Europe began to think and feel and look upon life; just as they did in ancient Greek and Rome. Many agencies conspired to bring in the renaissance; among these men were the crusades. It brought forth a new discovery and exploration of new continents. The feudal system also took a decline during this period. Once the movement began the civilization of Greece and Rome had been exerting a partial influence not just on Italy but other parts of medieval Europe. The early middle ages became a time of fear in Europe; many citizens believed in things like mythical creatures that inhabited the underground. They believed that in the whole world only three continents existed. Once the renaissance came about they were able to prove that none of these beliefs were actually true. During the middle ages many people were expected to conform. It also became a time of faith; the religion of Christianity gave hope to the middle ages. People that displayed creativity or strayed from established methods of thinking and behaving were punished. They would ultimately become an outcast of society. What the renaissance did was create a rebirth of the human spirit and spark that inner need for creativity. It steamed everything from its classical past and brought it into a new light. The renaissance started in Italy because the crisis facing Christianity at the time benefitted Italy. Italy was able to finally enjoy a bit of independence and freedom they hadn’t felt before. Another reason it started there was because the Italian city states had the wealth to do it. There was still many reminders in Italy about what Rome had been like in the past. The way the roads had formed, the aqueducts even the public buildings and monuments. There was a big attraction to classical art. Taken from the Romans the sculptures that came from there were very lifelike and admired by many people during the Renaissance. In the Middle ages art was flat and didn’t have the effect that Roman art had. The Italian Renaissance had a period lasting for about 200 years from 1350-1550. During this time many new techniques involved with painting emerged. The Greeks really respected and almost idolized the human body ; it was look as a complete work of art. People during the Renaissance started looking at things the way the Greeks did. Most of the artwork and paintings that were done in the Middle Ages focused more on religious themes. The middle Ages and Ancient Greek and Rome have many ties to the period of the Renaissance. There were many things to take from each era and bring it back to light.

The Renaissance Period is widely known for the abundance of amazing portraiture that circulated around Europe. During the Renaissance, Albrecht Dürer, a German artist painted a self-portrait in 1500 that had qualities that differed from the usual style of artist in that time (Chauhan). Jean Clouet also painted a portrait for the King of France and became the official court painter. Both artists had a talent for portraiture, while their styles were quite different. King Francis I wanted to be seen as a powerful man, and appointed Clouet to paint him in a classically renaissance way that highlights his wealth and authority. Dürer, described as a cocky, self-centered man, painted himself in a light that is unique and puts him on a ‘holy’ pedestal (Stokstad 356). In this essay I will show how although both paintings have clear differences with their style, both men in the compositions are conveyed in a great and very powerful sense.

The shift between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance was characterized by great socio-economic, political, and religious changes. Politically, the feudal system of the Middle Ages was exchanged for a more stable centralized republic/monarchy system that gave the people more freedom and input. Religiously, secularism became more important as stability gave people a chance to concern themselves with the “here and now” rather than simply the “hereafter.” Socially, there was a shift from dogma and unshakeable belief to humanism and the ability to interpret things for oneself. The Middle Ages began around 400 CE and lasted until 1400 CE while the Renaissance began around 1200 and continued until 1600. The 200 years that overlap between these two periods contain many pieces of “transition” art in which it is obvious that the change is beginning to take place. These collective changes that took place in this period dictated change in art as well. There were changes in iconography, style, purpose, and patronage that facilitated the overall transformation of art from a sense of illustrating what you are told to believe is true to optical realism and conveying how you yourself interpret that “truth”.
As previously stated, the renaissance was the rebirth of society. What led to this was a decrease in faith because of the great schism, a conflict between two popes, where both said they were the pope. People were starting to take a secular view compared to what the church told them to believe. Society was changing to where individual viewpoints mattered. With politics starting to matter, and a better economy, places were beginning to be city centered, specifically city states, which are urban societies that have taken secular views.
