Recommended: Definition of art
What is art? Art and assessment are deeply unified, since our ability to experience and understand artistic works is intensely unfair by our own perceptions. Consequently, any definition of art should emphasize the importance of perception in creating and experiencing art. In the film (Why Beauty Matters) by Roger Scruton, he is bringing out some pinnacles of art, and some of his observation and mines are somewhat in comparison. Scruton’s first high point is when he said, “Beauty is from another world.” Beauty is not from another planet in my opinion. Beauty is the first thing that is mentioned in the bible. When God created everything in Genesis chapter 1, He said at the end of each scripture, “and it was good!” In my opinion, there is no beauty on other planets. The beauty that comes from other planets is discovered by scientist that has never seen anything of that nature. Therefore, some people get philosophy mixed up with science and this causes controversy within the art world. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. The next point, “Beauty was not planted here by God but...
Rathnasambhava, the Transcendent Buddha of the South and Madonna Enthroned are very similar images that were produced by very different cultures. Both images were produced during the 13th Century. The image of Rathnasambhava, the Transcendent Buddha of the South was produced in Tibet during an interesting period of the country’s religious history. The branch of Tibetan Buddhism is led by a religious and sometimes political leader called the Dalai Lama. It was during the 13th Century during the reign of Kublai Khan, around the time of the production of this painting, that Tibet experienced the first incarnation of the Dalai Lama. One has to wonder if this painting is somehow related to that occurrence. According to one source, the reincarnation system for the Living Buddhas is the main point distinguishing Tibetan Buddhism from other forms of Buddhism.
If I were to ask you what is art, and how can one find it? What would you say? Well if it were me being asked those question, I would simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design and it could be found all among us. You may define it differently only because art could be defined in many ways. I could simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design. Well according to an article written by Shelley Esaak, an art history expert she mentioned that art has a way of stimulating different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between. She also mentioned that art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves. [1]
Crooked Beak of Heaven Mask is a big bird-figure mask from late nineteenth century made by Kwakwaka’wakw tribe. Black is a broad color over the entire mask. Red and white are used partially around its eyes, mouth, nose, and beak. Its beak and mouth are made to be opened, and this leads us to the important fact in both formal analysis and historical or cultural understanding: Transformation theme. Keeping that in mind, I would like to state formal analysis that I concluded from the artwork itself without connecting to cultural background. Then I would go further analysis relating artistic features to social, historical, and cultural background and figure out what this art meant to those people.
oco period took place during the first half of the 18th century across Europe. The Rococo style of art is erotic, sexual, and uses escapism. Escapism means that the art is not meant to be serious. Several popular themes arose during the Rococo period such as affection, love, and flowers. The Neoclassical period was a time of Enlightenment. Inspiring artists of the time were encouraged to take a grand tour before they went on to become famous artists. The grand tour is when these artists would travel to various places such as Rome to observe the techniques used in famous paintings and architecture. Both the Rococo and Neoclassical eras would lead up to a new construction of government.
Walter Benjamin emphasizes in his essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of its Technological Reproducibility” that technology used to make an artwork has changed the way it was received, and its “aura”. Aura represents the originality and authenticity of a work of art that has not been reproduced. The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican is an example of a work that has been and truly a beacon of art. It has brought a benefit and enlightenment to the art of painting, and it has an exemplary aura that cannot be replaced. A picture taken of the Sistine Chapel is just an imaged “captured”, while the painting is still original, because it is not movable, and its cult value is still intact. He asserts that the origin of an artwork gave its aura and authenticity and since it is not moveable, it does not have the ability to be reproduced by other artists. Therefore, the aura and authenticity is autocratic. For instance, the Sistine Chapel is owned and controlled by the Vatican—Catholic Cardinals. They control its usage to the masses. Once art becomes available to the masses, it becomes in a way ‘successful.’ In addition, he calls to attention that the forces of commercialization have subjected the aura of an artwork to cheapening cult value, which is a positive outcome for the masses.
...and mysterious but as Gladwell states “It is one thing to acknowledge the enormous power of snap judgments and thin slices but quite another to place our trust in something so seemingly mysterious” (51). Art has no set characterization so therefore no one could declare whether or not something is art. Art is left up to perception of the viewer and not the opinion of the critic; in quintessence art is indefinable—that is the beauty!
The past history have a huge impact on the future. From the ancient art history until current years it is safe to say that the art changed drastically, it shows that people nowadays have different values, styles and priorities in life. The past teaches people about the future and helps to avoid mistakes. In the Paleolithic period, where folks were focusing on hunting and gathering, where everyday life was dynamic, meaning they were moving from one place to another in search of better resources (Upper Paleolithic, 28) to Mesopotamian period where things were more certain and people liked to stay in one place. Paleolithic period did not consist of writing which is the main reason people can only guess and interpret the culture based on their own guesses what was the society like back then.
What is art? By definition it is, “An occupation requiring knowledge or skill” (Merriam). Many people would argue that late artist Jackson Pollock’s work would not go under this category. But Pollock’s paintings were not random splats and splashes, but carefully planned and expertly executed works of art.
Hunt, Lynn, et al. The Making of the West: Peoples and Cultures. Boston, New York:
We encounter art everyday. Art is paintings and sculptures, music and dance, film and photography. It is also fashion designing and architecture, novels and magazines. These seemingly different things have one thing in common – they are all ways in which humans convey themselves. For thousands of years, humans have used symbols to tell a story or describe a struggle. Art is the use of these symbols, symbols that represent us in some distinct way.
There are few questions quite as esoteric or as futilely subjective as the philosopher's "What is…?" Yet posing and answering this question in reference to the identity of art is critical to further discussions of our subject matter in this course. There is no way for us to discuss art until we have a working definition of what art is; we can't adequately use the term until we've defined it. To this end, I would like to submit this as a working definition: "Art is anything created for the purpose of communicating the sensations of emotional response to, or creating emotional response in, those who experience it."
In Elizabeth Bishop’s “One Art”, a speaker expresses the ease in becoming acclimated to the process of losing things. Namely, the poet contends that small, mundane objects like door keys are meant to be lost. These insignificant objects prepare individuals to accept bigger, meaningful losses. The speaker remains unnamed, but is evidently familiar with loss.
Throughout time, artists have yearned to make a living off of the work that they create. Artists have been both instigators and creators of many social and political ideas, sharing their thoughts and opinions through their work. Just like America strives to make itself known as a relatively new and independent country, new artists struggle to make themselves stand out among the older and more well-known artists. The delicate environment that maintains their source of ideas and creativity is at risk of being overcome by the business of art. In the controversy brewing over creativity in modern times, artists are going to have to select a side, and the structure of the artistic world as a whole rides on their choice. Some connoisseurs of art believe that artists should not be paid for their work, because it will affect the quality in a negative way. They believe that it will be rushed, and done in vain, to try and pay its creator’s next bill. On the other hand, though, how are artists supposed to support themselves and their work? No artist would willingly work a second job if they could turn a profit from their personal creative outlet. The value of art, as well, should be decided by the quality of the art, and not be chosen on the identity of the artist or the reputation of a middleman. Overall, it would be healthy for society as a whole to be more conscious about defining the separation of art and business.
My definition of art is an expression by an individual, put on canvas, sculpted, composed or built in a visual form; appreciated by others for its beauty and emotional power. Declaring something a piece of artwork is decided but the person who created it, but it is the viewer that determines whether that artwork is any good, and that view is constantly changing. The things that fascinated us once may not any longer. Although anything can be considered art, even a child’s drawing or ceramic green frog, for it to be considered great art, I believe the artist needs the skills to create, the creativity to give the artwork vitality, and the daring to use new techniques regardless of critics opinions.
So to answer the question you need to think what is art? To me art is a form of representing a person’s ideas which can be in any form of media whether it be a painting, a film, or a song, a novel or a photograph. For it to be classed as art though it must provoke emotion or thought and show signs of creativity.
