When is film art
To determine whether films can be classed as art first we need to work out what art actually is, The English dictionary defines art as ‘the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.’ If we go by the definition alone then it is easy to see why all films could be considered art as films do apply the creativity and imagination of many different people. However some people argue that traditional definitions do not apply to films in the same way that they would to traditional art forms and that only certain films can be classed as art. Some only class films such as art-house films and avant-garde cinema while others include films that are intended for a wide audience such as Sergio Leones westerns, the pioneering work of Alfred Hitchcock or the stylized films of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers. Others believe that the art/non-art boundary does not exist and all films are art, although some of it is better art.
In this essay I will try and answer the question: when or even can film be classed as art?
In the early days of cinema it was suggested that cinema is never art, film was said to be a photographic record of an artistic performance but not an art form in its own right but film is much more than a recording, filmmakers make numerous choices about every shot they make then you need to edit the film which results in the final product which is completely different to what an eyewitness to the filmed event would or could see, more people today have the view that all or most film is art, Noel Carroll whose book on mass art is a book on the effort to ...

So to answer the question you need to think what is art? To me art is a form of representing a person’s ideas which can be in any form of media whether it be a painting, a film, or a song, a novel or a photograph. For it to be classed as art though it must provoke emotion or thought and show signs of creativity.
You also need to think about what film is. Film is a way to tell a story by captureing scenes using a camera and lighting. So where does this connect to art? In my opinion film is considered art, as it has meaning and feeling behind it, all films take thought and time to create and although some films may be created for the purpose of profit or they may lack skill or talent they still deserve to be classed as art as they show someone’s imagination and creativity.
