About three million Americans, most of them being teenagers, practice self harm. In a recent study, almost fourteen percent of high school students surveyed said they had self harm. One in four of them had begun their practices by the sixth grade (Powell, 5). Unfortunately, many people who self harm believe that it is going to relieve them of their pain and make them feel better. Self harm is not usually an attempt at suicide, however it is an attempt to cope with feelings of pain and distress. There are different ways that a person can self harm. Risky behaviors, such as self harm can be a way of trying to block out anxiety or unhappiness by providing temporary relief from unwanted feelings. Most self harmers use knives, razor blades, glass, or other sharp objects. Sometimes, self harmers will scratch the skin with their fingernails, combs, or anything that can use to deliberately pick open the scars and reopen the wound. Unfortunately, drug and alcohol abuse are common signs in self harm as well. Drug overdose is the most common cause of hospital admissions for self harmers. They both can send neurotransmitters that can influence both pain and mood. Serotonin and norepinephrine are transmitters that are linked to both depression and physical pain. People take antidepressants that inhibit serotonin and norepinephrine, so it can help with the physical and mental problems. Because of the physical changes, the body will start shutting itself down. When a person has increased aches and pains, they have a decrease in appetite, which then leads to insomnia. Each symptom will work off of each other until the body eventually shuts down due to being malnurtured. In worse cases, the body may feel as if it's never hungry, leading to anorexia. Other worse symptoms from being malnurtured may lead to thoughts or attempts at
