Veganism
Vegetarianism is a trend that many people know of and many people personally know someone who follows a vegetarian diet. However, the vegan community is a smaller group of people who, instead of only not eating meat, they do not consume any animal products or use anything with animal products in it. There are many reasons people go vegan. The number of people following vegan and vegetarian diets around the world has been growing, people are choosing to eat this way because of animal welfare issues, the impact of meat and dairy on the environment, and the health benefits that come along with the diet. A major reason that people decide to adopt a vegan diet is because of animal rights and animal welfare issues. Although vegans believe that there is no way to "ethically" murder a living breathing animal, factory farming takes these murders to an entirely different level because of the inhumane way these innocent beings are treated before their slaughter. As stated in the article done by Vegan Outreach, the amount of waste that the animals produce in compacted areas cause severe burns to the eyes and skin of birds trapped in tight cages. Another horrific fact is that male chicks in the egg industry are often macerated, or ground up alive because they are not needed. There is also no federal law

Dairy and meat products contain a huge amount of saturated fats and although people will question vegans on how they get their protein, the majority of Americans eat too much protein, especially in the form of red meat. Following a vegan diet has been proven to improve your cardiovascular health and will eliminate all dietary cholesterol from your diet. It has also been proven that there is a lower risk of breast cancer when less dairy and meat is consumed ("57 Health Benefits Of Going Vegan |
The term vegan, devised in 1944 via Donald Watson, is referred to as an individual that follows veganism, which is the exclusion of all animal products to be consumed, predominantly in their diet (Kahn, 2011). Veganism is primarily supported due to preventing animal cruelty, as well as its health benefits and environmental consequences (Craig, 2009). Adolescence is referred to as the transition from childhood to adulthood, due to biological changes that occur via the onset of puberty (Ellis, 2004). Essential nutrients that are vital to be consumed during adolescence are proteins, which are in the category of macronutrients as they are required in large amounts, as well as calcium and iron, which are categorised as micronutrients, thus being required in smaller amounts (Bialostosky, Wright, Kennedy-Stephenson, McDowell & Johnson, 2002). Protein, calcium and iron are claimed to be essential nutrients in an adolescent female following a vegan diet as they are at higher risk to be lacked via plant-based sources if the consumption of these nutrients are inadequate, which may implicate negative effects on the growth and development during the pubertal growth spurt (Craig, 2009; Ilich-Ernst et al., 1998). This essay will be regarding to a 14 year old female named Jenny Brown, whom is currently following a vegan diet and is not consuming any supplementation in order to obtain adequate nutrition. As Jenny Brown is at the age of adolescence, this essay will discuss the biological changes that occur during puberty, followed on by a discussion on each of the vital nutrients including the macronutrient protein, as well as the micronutrients calcium and iron that are essential to be adequately consumed in order to attain nutritional competence ...
Vegan life is healthier for the nutritional benefits are better when compared to non-vegan eating. The majority of people in the world consume a diet, which contains food derived from animals. Those who have animal derived diets follow such a diet due to commonly known nutrition benefits and taste that come with the diet. Although, most people were told that such a diet was healthy, they wouldn’t follow such a diet if they knew the harm that came with it. Furthermore, several people know they require fruits, vegetables, and grains, according to the commonly known food nutrition chart. However, some people do not know that animal derived food is not necessary and that there are other healthier foods to replace them. Vegan diets follow the food chart needs without consuming food that come from animals by replacing the nutritional benefits that come from animals with plant-based foods that also have the same nutritional benefits.
This is actually not true. A vegan diet is no worse or better than a meat diet, it all depends on how balanced your diet is (Anisman-Reiner). Like with any diet a person has to be sure they are eating enough and receiving enough nutrients that their body needs to run. In any diet a person can have too much bad and not enough good, if a person eats too many fats and processed food they could become at risk for many health issues; a person on either a meat or vegan diet can be affected by this. What many people don’t know is that on a vegan diet a person can get all the nutrients a person can get on the traditional meat diet. One thing that many people often wonder is “Where do you get calcium if you don’t eat dairy?” A misleading fact in today’s society is that you need dairy to get calcium but this isn’t true. Countless other foods have calcium and a person on a vegan diet will eat more of these foods than a non-vegan making it easy for them to get all the calcium they need. A person who consumes 2,000 calories a day should have the equivalent of
According to Bonnie Beezhold et.al found that vegans and vegetarians, “…report better mood than non-vegetarians, suggesting that even less animal food intake is associated with better mood” (293). Also, Beezhold et.al, “…have found that the risk of major chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and type-2 diabetes may be reduced by adopting a completely plant-based diet vs. an omnivore diet” (Beezhold et.al 289). Overall, the medical community has agreed that veganism is a healthy option to avoid disease, but their concerns are that vegans will be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals that the regular omnivores are not deficient in. If a vegan is deficit in a certain mineral or vitamin that person can take supplements to combat it. People can say that if I take supplements will that make me healthy even though I consume meat? No, because you are consuming meat and that can clog arteries and increase cholesterol. I think that veganism is probably one of the healthiest options available for everyone. I also think that it is the healthiest because you do not see people become fat off of eating vegetables and fruits. I also agree with Beezhold et.al findings which show that vegans have less stress and anxiety because of the food they ate. Beezhold et.al think this may be because omnivores consume meat and the food the animals were fed where “…higher in certain
People love to eat meat. For over two million years, humans have relied on eating meat in order to survive or simply just because they enjoy the taste. Early humans had more powerful jaws and larger teeth and relied on meat as one of their main sources of food. As evolution took place and humans evolved, they developed smaller teeth and were only able to eat the meat if it was cooked. With humans evolving and being able to survive on foods other than meat, meat does not have to necessarily be a part of human diet anymore. Although many people have opted for a vegetarian lifestyle, most people still continue to eat meat and do not consider it a cruel act. Many have also stopped eating meat due health risks and environmental concern. Whether
Eating no animal products means that the animals who would've been suffering on factory farms will now not be brought into the world in the meat industry (Cowspiracy). It is a supply and demand issue, each vegan person saves over 200 animals each year from being eaten (PETA). More importantly, factory farming creates misery for animals and Veganism does not support it. Animals in the system are stuffed into disgusting, windowless sheds and crammed into wire cages, metal crates, and other containers (PETA). Those animals will never do anything that is natural and important to them because they are stuck in captivity. Most animals are not allowed outside, therefore do not breathe fresh air. Sadly, the factory farming industry tries to maximize output while minimizing costs. Giant corporations have found that they can make more money by squeezing as many animals as possible into tiny spaces, even though many of the animals die from disease or infection (PETA). They are often given so little space that they can not even turn around, for example, hens are kept in tiny cages, chickens and pigs are kept in overcrowded sheds, and cows are kept in unsanitary feedlots (Cowspiracy). Animals on factory farm are constantly tortured and by not eating meat it lessens a number of animals needed for food (PETA). Not to mention that most factory-farmed animals have been genetically manipulated to grow larger or to produce more milk or eggs than they naturally would (PETA). Some chickens grow so unnaturally large that their legs cannot uphold their outsized bodies anymore (PETA). Antibiotics are used to make the animals grow faster, which is also ingested by the consumer when eaten. Scientist concluded that factory farms’ widespread use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria that threaten human health (PETA). To help stop animal suffering in the farming
Many people have always wondered why people who had always ate meat their entire lives, decide to become vegetarians. People would presume that they wanted to lose weight, become healthier, or even just to try it out. Several would say non-vegetarianism is healthier and could help your body; however, vegetarians can be healthy too by what they eat and how much they eat of that particular food. Although I eat meat and I’m not a vegetarian, being a vegetarian can help your body in more ways than one and have many advantages in helping your body. Many become vegetarians to remove non-healthy things from their body, are animal lovers, or even religious or cultural reasons.
The vegan diet can be a very healthy way of life. There have been some research studies that have shown vegans are significantly lower in weight, they have lower blood pressure and lower levels of cholesterol than normal vegetarians and meat eaters. These health benefits are apparent because vegans consume more dietary fiber, about two to three times more than their meat-eating counter parts, which have been shown to reduce cholesterol, blood glucose levels and protect against colon cancer. Their diets are higher in potassium, magnesium, folic acid, vitamins C and E and the health-promoting phytochemicals which have all been proven to reduce the risk for heat disease, arthritis, prostate and other cancers, and may improve bone health (Vegetarian Diet). Vegans are less likely to suffer from heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers because they consume such high levels of plant foods (Vegan Diets: The Pros and Cons). Whatever the reasoning becoming vegan can be a very healthy way of life. ...
Some of the reasons I don’t agree with veganism is how eating meat is supposedly unhealthy for you, the believed environmental issues that arise, and the supposedly unethical reasons of slaughtering animals. Sources- 1. The Vegetarian Resource group I am using this source because it has several paragraphs on how and why veganism
"We human used millions of years to climb up on top of the food chain, why should we go back to eating grass?" The author of this quote is unknown, but it has been around for a while, at least in my family and community. When eating meat becomes one of the natural intuition of humanity, the idea of Veganism seems like an unwelcome topic. But as a matter of fact, the concept of veganism was being introduced during the past few decades, and it is becoming more and more popular, multiple reasons are behind this trend, maybe we will understand the idea of Veganism a little better by examine the leading causes. Perhaps the purpose of this article is not forcing any of the audience to pursue a vegan lifestyle, but rather lead you to explore the positivity and various aspects of the veganism, and whether it is the one-for-all solution to human health.
Eating Responsibly To eat responsibly means to know what you are eating and knowing what you are putting into your body, whether it is healthy for you or not. It’s a sad fact that the typical American diet (high in meat and processed foods) is not healthy. There are a lot of different ways to stay healthy, but it can also be very difficult to follow a good diet plan all the time. I know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I have tried to eat well before all of my classes. I include the necessary protein of eggs and sausage, and include a fruit of some kind.
In today’s fast-paced, modern and practical society people are becoming more health conscious. This includes trying to choose the best available options for a beneficial lifestyle. Exotic Greek salads, fresh fruit juices, delicate tofu preparation, smelly grilled vegetables, creamy grains soups, moisten carve soufflés, and so much more are common elections for meals for many people. They are becoming more concerned these days about the increasing health risks of a meat-based diet. On the other hand, others have taken a step further and believed that animal cruelty involved in killing animals and using them for their products is inhumane and should be outlawed. Since meat-eating has been an accepted part of the human diet across the spectrum of many civilizations for millions of years, a controversy emerges between those who want to be banned the use of animal products and those who enjoy a steak now and then. Should people consider becoming a vegan?
Healthy and affordable food choices on the go or even just in the store is a huge and worldwide ongoing problem that of course cannot be fixed overnight. To help start and put one foot forward to improvements in the availability of healthy food options and choices in lower income neighborhoods, we as a community and a whole should do the following.
Eating healthy changes you for the best. Healthy eating is good for the soul, mind, and body it helps with stress, depression, and clearing acne. We as a society need healthy foods to stay productive in life, and healthy eating is a choice why not make the best one.
Numerous people believe that a vegetarian diet is unhealthy for the reason that one is not consuming enough protein since there is a decrease in the consumption of meat. However, meat is not the only source of protein. Nuts and grains contain great amounts of protein, and by eating these in the place of meat, one not only gets protein, but avoids the harmful carbohydrates and fats that are in animal meats. Consuming supplements can also help gain nutrients if the diet is not providing enough. There are countless amounts of nutritional supplements that one can purchase, including fish oil and omega 3s. These can be fairly cheap if purchased at the right place, and easily give bodies the nutrients they crave to function.
