his weekend was the start to our week long annual quilting bee. Every winter the women gathered together in the time of cold and made quilts while there was no farm work to do. The children are at school and do not need to be monitored as there is only so much they can do while the weather is freezing. Their chores are still the same however and they will have to run outside to feed the chickens, but I handle the housework. The good part about so many women in one place, is the food making process is much easier. We will cook for all our families and the help all at the same time. We will also help each other with the laundry and stitching up and fixing clothes. Any clothes that can’t be fixed will be cut up for the quilting process. Any old clothes from the last year that no longer fit will also be torn or cut up to be made into quilts for any of the families attending or to be shipped to grown children who are now attending college or have moved even farther west.
Everyone loves puppies. Adjectives like cute, cuddly, adorable, and innocent are used to describe them. Sadly, the way they come into this world can be described as nothing short of ugly, premeditated and negligent. There are those who treat “man’s best friend” as though they were man’s worst enemy. Those people are in the business of manufacturing puppies by the millions, for millions. These particular manufacturing facilities they own and run are called “puppy mills”, where dogs and puppies are forced to live in the most inhumane, despicable conditions, far greater than prisoners of war or the worst criminals in our nation’s prisons have endured, causing inevitable high mortality rates. Of the six million puppies bred in puppy mills in the US annually, four to five million of them don’t survive. Everyday, eleven thousand cute, cuddly, adorable, and innocent puppies die due to these ugly, premeditated and negligent breeding procedures. Puppy mills should be shut down and made illegal until such time that strict laws are put into place to control and enforce humane breeding and living conditions, protecting the welfare of these dogs, and drastically lessening their mortality rate and the way puppy mill owners make their living.
We live in a world where sadly we have forgotten about animal rights and their freedom. We allowed thousands of animals get treated inhumanely allowing them to be captured in small crates and abused. Imagine living in a world where being labeled as an “animal” means living your whole life miserable in captivity without being able to move around. As well as living and breathing to the pollution factory farms causes to the environment, realizing compounds of hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane causing health problems to human beings. Sadly, these are the realities behind the scenes of factory farms that nobody ever speaks about. With this said, I believe that factory farming should not be allowed in America because is animal cruelty and harmful to the environment and humans.
“No bees, no honey; no work, no money.” Bees are becoming an endangered species due to colony collapse disorder, a colony no longer existing due to a combination of deadly factors. Bees are very important in our lives from making food cheaper to making honey-added in many medicines, foods, and other products. There are a few steps we can take in order to save our honeybees.
Going to school is very time consuming and so is having kids. Most people that have kids don’t finish college, if they started. It is a struggle to find people continuously to watch your child, especially if they are working as well. I have seen people bring their child to class if the teacher allows it. Parents have a hard time getting a babysitter. Being that Baton Rouge Community College is a community college most people cannot afford the daycare. A lot of classes you may need do not have an online course. Having a free daycare, open all day, on campus would be great. So many people would be at ease.
Charlie Gordan was a superstitious, hard working, happy boy trapped in a man’s body, should he change his I.Q to become normal? In the science fiction book “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes, Charlie is a mentally challenged man, age 37, with an I.Q of 68. He wants to be normal and has a surgery to hopefully triple his I.Q. The surgery works but is not life lasting. Therefore, Charlie’s life is better now after the A.I surgery. Charlie knows what true friends are, he experienced feelings, and he was smart for a little while, are all reasons why it was good for charlie after the surgery.
The North American Monarch Butterfly population has declined over 80% from 1999 to 2016. (Pleasants) These spectacles are one of the species on the endangered species list, and were recently added to the list in July of 2022. This is a very troubling and very recent addition to this list, and the main reason for their declining numbers is habitat loss by use of herbicides. Although these butterflies may seem to have a grim future, there are and can be many ways to stop the alarming decline of this species.
If you had the chance to triple your I:Q and be the smartest person ever would you Charlie Gordon was a mentally challenged human and the main character or the story “Flowers for Algernon” charlie had the I:Q of 64 doctors gave him an ai surgery to make him 3 times smarter. After the surgery he was better off and more aware. Charlie gordon should of had the A:I surgery. Charlie Gordon discovered feelings, emotions, helped science, and gained friends.
Did you know that 97% of the 10 billion animals tortured and killed each year are farm animals, that mainly come from factory farms? It is said that factory farming is the biggest form of animal cruelty on Earth. In a factory farm in Ohio, workers killed injured pigs by hanging them on a forklift to slowly be strangled; the practice is defended by the pork industry. Many can argue that these animals in these farms are bred a certain way, and that the animals don’t have feelings, but the farming techniques cause stress on all the animals, health risks for both the animal and humans, and many farmers do not even benefit from the animals they raise.
If you had a choice between a burger and a bowl of crickets, I think I would know which you choose to eat. As disturbing as this sounds, in the near future we may not have that choice. With our annual protein consumption rising, and Europe’s protein sources decreasing, coupled with a growing population, we may have only one alternative… Insects.
The trip opened my eyes and I was grateful for the opportunity to share what God had given to me. Another task we had the privilege of helping them with was building a new chicken coop. We built a new roof and cleaned it up so that the chickens wouldn’t get too hot. The tricky part was communicating that we built exactly what they wanted. Therefore, I was there to both help construct, but also help get communication between us and the owners under control.
The topics discussed by Agustina Gonzalez in this discussion was unique and creative. What a great imagination. Anyone of these chosen topics could result in a very interesting and persuasive paper.
All great leaps in medicine have always seemed like heresy at first but have always turned out to be for the betterment of everyone, and genetic engineering is no different. Genetic Engineering has been banned in the US but has flourished outside the country and brought about seemingly unreal results, such as allowing infertile women to become pregnant and bringing about a possible cure for Muscular Dystrophy which is currently labeled as incurable. Genetic Engineering is the next step in modern medicine yet has already been banned in the US due to its sinister and incorrect press of allowing humans to play god. However, countries outside of North America have cast doubt aside and already begun research on Genetic Engineering. This previously
All living things are made of DNA; DNA is contained within strands called genes. The genes within any organism are what decides what the organism will look like, act like, and how it lives. Naturally, through breeding, the genes are confined within a species or a pair of like species. There is a way to break the confines of a species and add or remove genes from an organism. The implications of this technology are astronomical. The Human race could gain so much from just a little more research. Genetic engineering should be practiced, funded, and perfected because the potential benefits are well worth the risks associated with it.
How will you climb the mountain to higher learning? Will you stay organized through the use of an agenda? Or maybe your mobile phone? “Sixteen percent of teens keep track of their goals using their mobile phone while 48 percent use a notebook, planner, or journal” (Statistics). Fruits are packed with nutrients and fiber, so we always want to include them in the diet. These succulent, colorful foods are best eaten whole, rather than processed into high-calorie foods, but sometimes it may be exciting and fun to prepare them in creative ways. Here are some ways to make eating fruit more enjoyable.
